Freddy Canteen Commits To Notre Dame :: Notre Dame Football :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics
March 1, 2017

NOTRE DAME, Indiana - Freddy Canteen will attend graduate school at the University of Notre Dame and play football for Fighting Irish this fall, head coach Brian Kelly announced today.

Canteen will graduate with a degree in English from the University of Michigan this April and will join the Notre Dame program in June. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Freddy will bring some speed and athleticism to our wide receiver group," said Kelly. "We're excited to get him on campus with our coaching staff and players in preparation for the 2017 season. Freddy is a committed, focused and determined individual, both on and off the field, and our receivers and offense will benefit greatly from his addition."

"I'm truly honored and humbled for this incredible opportunity," said Canteen. "I'm very thankful to Coach Kelly and his staff for believing in me. I'm excited to start this new chapter in my life and can't wait to get going with my new teammates."

Canteen played in 16 career games for the Wolverines at wide receiver during the 2014 and `15 seasons. He caught six career passes for 22 yards and one touchdown. Canteen was limited to just five games as a sophomore in 2015 and did not see any action for Michigan in 2016 due to injury.

As a freshman in `14, Canteen quickly made an impact for Michigan as one of the fastest players on the team. He appeared in 11 games and started against Northwestern (Nov. 8) and Ohio State (Nov. 29). Canteen caught a three-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter against the Buckeyes.

Canteen was a four-star prospect coming out of Eastern Christian High School in Elkton, Maryland. He was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 298 overall player and the No. 41 wide receiver in the country. As a senior at Eastern Christian in 2013, Canteen played against current Irish players' Brandon Wimbush (St. Peter's Prep), Jimmy Byrne, (St. Ignatius), Liam Eichenberg (St. Ignatius) and Shaun Crawford (St. Edward).

Rumor going around that he might be leaving the program. Sampson said in 247 forums it's "under consideration" but he hasn't been able to "rock solid" confirm it yet.

Like quiting football or transferring to another program?

No one saw this coming...

This wasn't about getting to 85 it was about getting to 84 or 83 or 82 or wherever they end up.

I hope he lands somewhere great or finds a job.

But I like this move. One more to 85 and he wasn't going to play real snaps here.

So he can still "grad transfer" to another school without losing his last year of eligibility?

It doesn't seem like that would be in the spirit of the rule. He graduated prior to coming to ND, didn't obtain any additional degrees, but could transfer again.

You'd be against this?

Given Freddy’s spot on the depth chart, I don’t really care if he stays or not.

I was just speaking in general that it would go against the spirit of the grad transfer rule.

If he hasn't played 4 years, and he's going to be going to school while playing, I'd be OK with going anywhere.

Prister all but saying here that Canteen should be getting the hell out of Dodge. Hard to disagree.

Canteen returned to the field this spring and once again was in the mix, but concluded the 15 practices no higher than third-team on the depth chart, which sparked post-spring speculation that Canteen might take his final year of eligibility elsewhere.

...

Long-Term Projection
Down to a final year of eligibility, Canteen has fought the good fight but has not been able to overcome a litany of health issues that have repeatedly derailed his path to playing time, first at Michigan and now at Notre Dame.

With the spring semester recently ending, now would be the time Canteen would be searching for alternatives beyond Notre Dame if playing time in his final year of eligibility is important to him. He could conceivably still contend for snaps with the Irish, particularly with his knowledge of the offense/coverages, but the influx of talent likely will prevent extra reps from coming his way.

Career Comparison
A separated shoulder during his senior year of high school play in Morgantown, W.Va. slowed wide receiver Ronnie Rodamer coming into Notre Dame and his career never did quite launch for the Irish.

After preserving a year of eligibility as a freshman, Rodamer caught one pass as a sophomore in 2001 and two passes as a junior in ’02. The 2003 season-opener against Washington State proved to be Rodamer’s last game with the Irish after suffering a concussion.

He ultimately transferred to Montana, where he was listed as a “transfer of impact,” but played in just two games with four receptions for 15 yards.

I'd be interested to know the logistics on this as well. Or is this the part where the NCAA just kind of makes it up as they go. I'm fine with whatever in his case, but what is the actual rule on it ? seems like he would lose the final year if he graduated and used the grad transfer year (aka ncaa free agency).

I forget what show I was listening to awhile back but they discussed "6 years to play 5". 1 play= 1 year. Plain and simple if you are a part of a program your clock is ticking. If you play 5 straight years then your done. If you have to miss a year or even two then you still have a chance to get 4 years of playing. Not sure where I personally sit on the concept but it is at least something to think about. On the surface it seems like it would take some thought out of certain situations.

Transferring, per Sampson

So, does Freddy have to transfer to a school that has a major that both ND and Michigan don't offer?

Could he theoretically transfer back to Michigan?

The absurdity of the transfer rules and how it applies to Freddy's situation makes me SMH.

he should have just taken a medical and stayed at ND to finish his masters

I hope that Freddy finds a place where he can get some playing time.

With that said, it certainly would be interesting if after this transfer, he did another graduate transfer for his final year of eligibility. He could theoretically end up making three graduate transfers. LOL. I doubt if anyone in the NCAA ever even thought of that possibility.
