'14 MD WR Freddy Canteen (Notre Dame Graduate Transfer)

When Canteen and Brady Pallante were not on the fall roster last year, Haverford said,

Pallante and Canteen honestly weren't takes. Hoke recruited a lot of kids that just realistically weren't worthy of playing at this level.
and,
Hate to say it, but those are two kids who never belonged at Michigan in the first place.

Talked to my UM buddy and he told me this:

- a kid with great character
- he's fast and a good route runner
- was passed by true freshman on multiple occasions
- would be a solid depth or practice squad addition
- can play WR, corner and special teams

2014 Recruiting: Freddy Canteen | mgoblog

A very good breakdown from MGoBlog of him as a recruit. Worth noting that the sham school ECA produced a lot of busts, including Kenny Bigelow at USC. The fact that he was pushed out of the program by Harbaugh should be troubling to everyone, but we absolutely needed another body at WR even if just for practice. It's also important to note that after some rave offseason reviews as a true frosh and limited contribution on the field, he bounced around between WR and CB as a soph before getting kicked out of the program for having shoulder surgery. It remains to be seen which position he may factor in at, because we need bodies at both.

He has the athletic traits to be a good roster add if he's healthy, so no way to look at this as anything but a positive.

freddy himself last night stated he is committed to ND as a WR

and he has fast @ss feet(they call him fast feet freddy)...but check the speed folks

His offer list certainly didn't represent a 4:s: prospect.

But at minimum practice body and special teamer.

I have no issues if ND starts bringing more guys in like this to fill out the roster. It might be that depth building niche we can fill to try and compete with the big boys.

Your assumption about the lack of PT is most likely correct.

But this move is still a good one by the staff. The WR corp is thin and could use some bodies and some veterans. Hunter retiring from football and Holmes transferring made some holes.

So if all Canteen turns into is a special teams player and depth at the WR position I'm all for it. Any other production is just icing on the cake.

Help my with my cerebral flatulence. Oh, yeah, when I was boycotting all things Irish Torri Hunter Jr, and Corey Holmes, both made their alternative plans. Forgot all about that!

It appears he shut it down in June before his senior year. Tennessee was the last school to offer before he committed. He was then an EE so that all plays into it.

4.43...just saw video of him...he is stout enough. Couple years of adversity...Mature...smart...Winbush hasn't imprinted on Favorite reciever(s)...new offense kinda built for guys like this...

I won't be surprised at all if he excels at ND...

just....4.43...with some Dback in his past...I mean...Geez...you could put him on every special team, and he'd make an impact...Polian has got to be thinking YEA!!!

Essentially he takes Corey Holmes spot after Corey graduated in three years and will play elsewhere now. Fine with this.

Is that his 40 time? Sorry if obvious but where did you see that?

Canteen seems like an interesting player but his addition is confusing when you consider:

Returning WRs
  • W (ESB/Claypool/Boykin)
  • X (Stepherson/McKinley/Armstrong)
  • SLOT (Sanders/Finke/Mcintosh/Young)
  • all the WRs available in the 2018 class

It just seems like someone may be leaving or not available. I know that's debatable i.e. you can argue Canteen is more ready or is a serviceable backup but in the absence of a departure, it is one less spot for a deep 2018 WR class:

  • ARSB
  • Hightower
  • Babb
  • Moore
  • Anderson-Butts
  • Lenzy
  • Austin
  • Micah Jones
  • and others

I just wonder if someone is leaving or expected to be unavailable.

Or, with the striking lack of productivity last year, maybe it's a message.

Isn't that what we thought all along? That he is a depth guy, a guy to push others and play special teams. He can provide depth at corner as well. He is a solid stop gap in the case of emergency and someone that will fight to play. We need that on this team.

If we learned anything about this team, depth charts mean little once the season starts. We have seen guys like Rees, Schmidt, Toma and Finke get on the field by sheer will. Why not him?

The only difference is that he is also athletically gifted.

Good article. ND pursued him. HS coach thinks he's Will Fuller 2.0.

A few plays a game with Sanders and Canteen lined up on the inside on either side, with EQSB and Stephenson on either sideline, and a RB in the backfield, could be fun to watch.
