Comments being made by who?

And why Duh. The guy appears to like college, probably isn't going to be a high pick, would be an obvious captain. Positionally he's a tweeter who has landed in a perfect defense. Why not come back? Injury history, yeah, but otherwise?

Because we've been talking about it for weeks.

As to who he is referring to? I don't know but there's plenty of stuff being mentioned. Pretty sure the SB Trib guys openly talked about the possibility of him not returning.

He hinted pretty much the same thing to Pete Sampson when Sampson asked him. He has his degree, his NFL stock won't change with one more year and he's getting married. Not much reason to stay another year. Sampson said when he saw him Saturday he got the impression from the look on Drue's face that he knew it was his last home game.

Except for the chance to play for a National Championship and play on one of the best defense in college football in 2018. Only players in the two deep graduating Trumbetti, Morgan, Martini...

You can't guarantee him that. Time to go to NFL, make some money for the wife.

We better find a pass rush if we want to be thought of as that.

I mean, sure, if the guy wants to go, he wants to go. I get it.

But there's something to be said for spending another year at Notre Dame, being on top of the world, doing battle against Michigan and Florida State with your buddies, versus hanging around the fringes of the NFL for a paycheck. And the NFL will still be there next year. College won't. Ask McGlinchey if he regrets coming back.

And worst case scenario, even if Tranquil does blow out his knee again next season, he seems like a smart kid. I suspect he'll do OK in life.

McGlinchey is a completely different case. By coming back he has put himself in line to be a top 20 pick in the draft. He wasn't going anywhere near that high last year. He's made himself some money this year. Plus he didn't want to go out on after a 4-8 season. Dru's stock isn't changing. He's getting married and he's simply ready to move on with his life. That NFL paycheck will actually be pretty sweet for a guy coming out of college starting a family life. If he's a 3rd day draft pick (likely) he's looking at probably a 4 year deal worth 500-600,000 a year with signing bonus of around 250,000. If he does well in those 4 years the next contract will be bigger. I don't know college graduates who make that kind of money coming out of college in the real world.

How do you know this?

Agree Drue's draft stock isn't changing with a fifth year. We'll see if McGlinchey's did. Either way a sixth-round pick signing bonus is maybe $50K, which is actually less than most mechanical engineering grads at Notre Dame will make in their first jobs. To make any real money, he has to actually make an NFL team. No guarantees there, but if he is indeed drafted, as opposed to being a UDFA, he's certainly got a shot. But really, he needs to hang around the league awhile. Even fewer guarantees there. Drue's got value, especially as a thumper in run support. So maybe he does last a few years and actually makes that $2.4 million you're talking about. Great. But maybe he lasts a season or two on the fringes and blows out his knee again. Hopefully it's just the knee, and not concussions. Who knows. Either way, I hope he's not going to the NFL for the quick paycheck. He's one who seems to have more going on in life than that.

The only pro to staying is to play another year with your brothers. There are many cons. To some that one pro is enough, to some it is not. Doesn’t make the decision right or wrong in either way. He’s been equipped with many tools, just time to pick which ones to use.

That statement is based on the way Pete Sampson interpreted his comments when speaking to him. A player drafted late 5th, early 6th round will get a bonus of around 175,000-250,000. And a four year deal worth 2.4 million if he plays the four years. That was the rate for players drafted in 5th and 6th rounds last year.

Re: Salary. I was a bit low. A mid-sixth-round pick makes a signing bonus of ~$160K, with a four-year contract of maybe $2.6M, if he lasts four years.

But Tranquil could just as easily wind up another Elijah Shumate. Barely miss the draft and sign as a free agent, hang around a season or two on scout teams, get hurt. Be done before your 24th birthday.
Going pro is a choice. I get that. I just don't always think it's the better choice, in the long run.

If he stays for a fifth year isn't free tuition towards a Masters Degree count for something?

Exactly. I'd be looking at the vast number of guys in the NFL whose football careers are finished a long time before their bodies are finished and that now wished they had another year of college football. You could probably count ten from Notre Dame in the last 2 years.

He's a draftable player. Skill set different than Shumate. The position he plays is becoming a popular sub package role in the NFL. Hybrid S/LB. He could easily be another Mathias Farley only drafted instead of undrafted. If it were me it's an easy decision.

Discussed this before. The signing bonus is there, but the salary you mention is really no different than being an UDFA. To get the salary, he needs to be on the roster. Some stats were shared before, but the amount of UDFA on NFL rosters now is pretty high compared to 10 or 15 years ago. To me it is a simple ROI....NPV of the signing bonus versus the NPV of the additional education he would receive (and possible a signing bonus next year). Either way, he has to really good options to pick from and I wish him all the luck.

Edit: I assume he believes he would make the roster in either case, thus why I kept that out.

Agree. I would be surprised if Dru doesn’t have a fairly successful pro career (barring a major injury). Kid is a player.

Also, don't pigeon hole him as a sub pkg guy only. At 6-2, 230 Drue has a good frame to work with. He's as big or bigger than either of the Bears inside LB's were at the same point of their college careers... one of which started off as a smaller, borderline 2*-3* safety in HS.

If Drue wants to be a 245 thumper he could do that, If he wants to be a quick 230lb hybrid, he could do that. His Safety & Rover experience are just pluses if he moves into a more traditional LB position.
