Sucks he lost his C for his very last ND game.

Thank you Nyles for all your hard work and heart the last four years. Whatever you did this week, just learn from it and don't be a bonehead in the NFL. Make Our Lady proud young man. Good luck and God speed.

Of course ESPN has the "Notre Dame's Nyles Morgan stripped of captaincy" article as a top article on their NCAAF section and not an article like "Miles Boykin's one-handed grab wins Notre Dame Citrus Bowl." Not surprised.

I thought the same thing when I saw that. Boykin probably had one of if not the best play of the bowl season and ESPN goes with the Morgan article.

Is it ok to tweet current players over 18? I get so confused.

Or are you going to invoke the Comiskey Clause where one Sox fan can tweet at another Sox fan regardless of age or sex?

Do I need italics dagumit?

NYLES MORGAN Draft Profile – NFL.com

OVERVIEW
Morgan waited for his time to shine with the Irish, despite coming to South Bend as a first-team USA Today All-American and top 50 overall recruit nationally from Crete, Illinois (south of Chicago, near Indiana border). The son of a former Western Illinois footballer (Thomas) played in 12 games, starting four, as a true freshman in 2014 (47 tackles, 3.5 for loss, sack). Morgan was stuck behind veterans in 2015, however, playing as a reserve in every game, making 17 tackles (eight on special teams to lead the team). He came out swinging in 2016, topping the defense with 94 stops, six for loss, four sacks, and three pass break-ups, attacking gaps to pressure the quarterback or stuff runs in the hole, as well as showing the agility to stay with receivers in space.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS Quality, heads-up tackler. Accelerates into tackles, wraps up and runs his feet to completion. Does a solid job of reading running backs intentions and sliding from gap to gap to mirror him. Will not hesitate to step into the hole and handles his physical duties against linemen and fullbacks. Adequate diagnosis of run direction and initial quickness gives him a solid head start. Motor is usually good throughout the rep. Had an impact on special teams before he became a starter at linebacker.
WEAKNESSES Short strider with restricted lateral agility and foot quickness. Plays too upright in space and gets stuck in neutral when changing direction. Chase speed and range is below desired NFL level. Tends to wait between first and second level for runners to get up to him rather than firing all the way downhill. Needs to be more careful with maintaining his backside contain responsibilities. Will occasionally run himself out of the play. Can be slow to recognize play-fakes. Too passive in pass drops. Sits in space, but doesn't actively close-out passing lanes. Not athletic enough to handle man coverage.

DRAFT PROJECTION Priority free agent

BOTTOM LINE Two-year starter and 2017 team captain who plays with good energy but lacks the playmaking, athletic traits that teams look for from linebackers. His road to an NFL roster will likely need to be paved on special teams.

If he goes undrafted, I'd like to see the Bengals sign him and see if he can learn from Burfict.

Burfict is athletically restricted kind of like Morgan, but he finds a way to get in position... If Morgan can get similar tutoring, he could be okay as a backup option and two-down linebacker for depth purposes (because the Bengals need it, because Burfict is hurt or suspended for 50% of the season, every season).

I kind of wondered what the interest would be at the next level. What it could mean for next years Irish is.... with a more athletic Coney at Mike and a much more Athletic Tranquil ( over Martini) at Buck....linebacker play could be a real strength. Especially with a stronger more experienced D line in front of them

He confirmed after Pro Day that his shoulder was basically injured all year. He had surgery after the season. Didn’t specify what type of injury though.

I wish we could have seen a 100% Nyles for his last season.

Same, would have been nice for a healthy senior season. Look at the health problems Tranquil had early in his career, it's nice he's been able to stay pretty healthy recently and have some success. Gotta make the most of the opportunities when you can, never know what may happen.

Nyles wasn't great, but he was a warrior. Battled, worked, and didn't make a sound (cough, Alize).

Top 3 toughest players of the BK era. Don't @me.

Got waived by the Bears. He's on the market again.

Kind of a strange career for such a heralded guy. It looked like he was a star in the making when he took over for Joe Schmidt in '14.

Injuries nagged at him consistently, and I think he was also done a disservice by the coaching staff in '15. One of those "what could have been if things all went smoothly?"

He really could've used more than a single season with Clark Lea. That and staying healthy would've been nice

You need to quantify, because you left off Manti and how quickly we forget Q.

Schmidt wasn't the best, but he was tough. He wasn't afraid to mix it up.

I respect Joe Schmidt's contributions to the team and the defense. He filled a massive depth hole that was left by two coordinators who were lackluster on the recruiting trail. He played well above any reasonable expectations and helped keep our unit from being a total disaster in '14 and '15.

I just think the unit would have been better served by having Nyles on the field instead in '14 and '15, with Joe ready as a backup. There would have been more mental errors in alignment, maybe, but I think it would have been a net positive in the long run. Jaylon would have been more free to operate in several roles, rather than being relegated to a base role that often saw him covering for his MLB.

Nyles Morgan: loads of physicality/not good instinctually at reaction post-snap, pass coverage, etc. (Elko used him mainly as a blitzer to hammer in a predetermined hole --- what the pros call a special team's thumper.)

Joe Schmidt: loads of instincts and understandings, but WAY underpowered in the physicality area. Could be "right there" and still get run over or not get off the block. Schmidt played because he could make others better, not himself.

As to who played: two really flawed guys. One who could get others ready to play and the other could not. Mental and instinctual. I refuse to blame the staff for any of that. Elko was cleverer than BVG at finding ways that Morgan could help the team without being able to cure his deficiencies (I used to see Martini lining up misplaced players all the time pre-snap, even Morgan himself.)

Saw that he was playing for the Arizona hotshots in the AAF. Not sure if he starts though. They play tomorrow night at 8 est.

Edit: apparently I'm really late on this. Carry on lol
