I thought he said it would be about a month.

IIRC, Kelly said that Grace has reached a point where he has regained normal gait/foot strike, which was a major turning point. But he has still has work to do before he is ready to play in a game.

I should follow up and say that Kelly walked back from this today. No timeline on Grace. Incorrect to say that he has overcome gait/strike issues; still working on that.

With Morgan only playing against Rice, Kelly and Van Gorder have to be at least considering a redshirt, until other issues at linebacker indicate otherwise.

Again, as others have noted, we seem almost to be using a nickel as our base defense --- that means Jaylon plus one other is who we need. That is usually Schmidt, or Onwualu, or Councell, or even Martini. AND the Tranquill/Hill package erodes significant reps and alters linebacker arrays too. MAYBE we won't need to burn a year for Morgan this season, particularly if Kelly/Van Gorder think that Grace will be able to thump at least half the season.

Of course recruiting success might play in this too. Perhaps a couple of studs still out there pop, and Van Gorder says: Coach I don't need to separate Nyles from the guys we've got anymore eligibility-wise. Kelly seems to not think like this [always saying he'll play the best guys we have to win the game today without regard to seniority or redshirting], but if Van Gorder thinks he has enough "winning guys", who knows?

My instincts say that Morgan likely plays, but mainly on special teams and at game-over time [barring injuries]. Kelly, despite what he says, does seem to worry a little about certain kinds of kids who can't handle disappointment. [I believe that a certain second team QB may be such a case]. If Morgan has any of this in him, then he probably won't be redshirted. Of that I know nothing.

Good post. This is some of what I was getting at earlier this morning, Mike.

I don't view Morgan not playing against michigan as a bad sign, but I'm not quick to dismiss it. Wouldn't shock me at all to later find out that Morgan has a lingering shoulder or knee "injury" and get redshirted.

But some of the latest reports on Grace may dictate that Morgan will have to play, remaining "injury" free.

Stop... The second team QB is all about winning National Championships in '16 & '17, competing for the starting job in '15 & being ready to lead this years team if called upon for any reason. He ain't goin' nowhere.

Agreed. Malik isn't going anywhere. He'd have to sit out a year and learn a new system. Makes no sense. He's a play away from starting and he'll be positioned as the starter in 16 and 17. As to Morgan if he's as good as we think he is he won't be here 5 years so might as well play him.

The point was: Malik shows frustration in his face and even manner when he finally gets in the game. I believe that Kelly is trying very hard to get him some reps to dissipate that. This young man is, well, young.

... but this is Nyles' thread so I apologize for even broaching this.

I can't believe how good Morgan and many others for that matter look out there as freshman. I mean I knew he was good but come on. Hard not to be real excited for the future.

BK commented that MARTINI was playing and that they didn't have anyone else

Is Deeb and Randolph healthy enough to play?

He looked pretty good. If Schmidt can't go this week, this will be a much bigger test for Morgan. He's be going against much bigger linemen.

That play where he diagnosed the option left and shot through the gap and made the big hit was insanely impressive. His speed through the line is insane. Same issue Jaylon had early will be trusting his instincts. Once he trusts what he sees, he'll be dynamic.

can't believe Deeb hasn't made any sort of on-field impact yet.

he simply must not be fast enough nor to the physical level of nyles or the cerebral level of joe, which leaves little space for him to crack minutes.

Morgan came in and played fairly well in a big spot for us. The emotion he brought with him though was an even bigger boost IMO. I expect lots of big things from him moving forward!

Morgan definitely looks to be a physical upgrade from Schmidt. Obviously the question is how much we lose in the exchange from a mental standpoint (not a knock on Morgan's intelligence, it's just hard for any freshman to think the game at the level Joe has been).

Agreed. Morgan has a helluva motor and athletic skills but you worry about a young kid playing that position where understanding where you and others need to be is crucial.

Loved seeing Nyles get real reps last night. Physically he is the real deal. Let's hope he is a fast learner, too.

As far as deeb, I would say Greer took more minutes away than Morgan.

Excited to see his athleticism on the fielderly last night, however, there will be growing pains going forward if Schmidt cannot go this weekend......but he made some plays that Joe would've had a hard time making, while not making plays that Joe would have. We'll have to wait and see how this wekend plays out.

I was at the game last night. Many of the fans around me had no idea who number 5 (on defense!) was and were impressed by his speed and athleticism. If he gets more reps, he will be a monster!

Haha Airplane was made 10 years before I was born. I've always wanted to check it out tho. I love some Leslie Nielson. The Naked Gun trilogy and Wrongfully Accused are all great.

Airplane was made way before I was born, too. So were Rocky, Slap Shot, The Godfather movies, Blazing Sadles.....there is literally no excuse for never having seen Airplane. You appear to have the internet.....
