It'd be ironic maybe if they were related. Companies have FULL control and 100% say in their tuition reimbursement policy. 80% have a stipulation that you have to stay a certain time after. Verizon just doesn't care if you leave, it's a simple as that.

Universally, companies care if you leave without a notice.

Obviously Stanford doesn't care, though, so I'm not sure that original comparison even applies then.

Stanford absolutely cares, but they can't raise a stink about it because there will be push back from media, players, and future recruits. That's one part of this that makes it very different than what you're trying to compare it to. You don't think David Shaw and Stanford's 12 fans care?

If a company changes their tuition reimbursement policy, there is no pushback. If you don't like it, don't take it as a benefit, and/or go to a different company. Plain and simple.

It's kinda like leaving a job before you work the amount of time you agreed to in exchange for them paying for your education. Amirite?

He can't possibly lack this amount of self-awareness, can he? This has to be a joke

I am no Elliot fan, and I dislike The Ohio State. However, someone who seems to hold to love the concept of playing for love of school and team mates has my respect. Yes, that has to be balanced with financial wisdom. However, E. Elliot's passion is also part of what is making him a great play.

(It feels weird to defend any OSU player, but I do admire his attitude on this one.

A company of 200K employees is well aware of, and can change the policy at the flick of the pen with no argument if they don't want people to leave right after finishing school.

I'm not denying that, but it doesn't change the irony of your viewpoint lol

Busted Koon.

The number of employees a company has doesn't have any bearing. Verizon may not have a policy where you have to repay if you leave after receiving some benefit(s). IL was simply stating the hypocrisy of your statement. Crusader would probably know, but I doubt these scholarships have any language that stipulates players must play in a predetermined number of games during the season.

If you view not giving a 2 week's notice (or whatever's appropriate given your work) as = working for a company that reimburses you for tuition and then one day leaving that company, we'll never see eye to eye on this so let's just end this futile discussion.

It's about leaving before the agreed upon date in exchange for the tuition. Not simply "one day leaving".

At will employment = no agreed upon date. How is that not understood by now?

Let's not make stuff up, especially when it's in an unrelated thread please. Take it to a Lep Lounge thread if you guys want to discuss my work. You guys can build me story board my career, just make it super dramatic and interesting!

Anyone who knows this story and what he had the potential for in last year's draft and where he is now, should really eat it after that tweet. All of the media outlets clamoring 'good for the athlete' should shut it.

Many of his teammates have already come out in strong support of his decision. If you're not happy for a teammate who worked his entire life to make a dream happen and is now taking the final step in realizing that dream, you're a shitty teammate. I'm sure Jaylon was thrilled about having to discuss the loss of $20M with his dad over a meaningless game.

I've said I understand the motivation...not outlandish to consider.

I would have handled it the same way as his teammates...but that doesn't mean that is what they really think. I know I would have been disappointed in him, but would have put a happy face on it...because what are you going to accomplish by calling him out?

And I am from a different time, but my dad would have expected me to choose the commitment, try to mitigate, but live with the consequences...I know, Bizzaro world. But that is my reality.

I've never been in this kid's shoes, so maybe that much money changes things...IDK.

I hate the whole "meaningless game" argument. Every game has meaning, even if it is "meaningless" to the people playing.

Michael Jordan said every away game against a vastly inferior opponent where finding motivation was difficult, he would look into the crowd and realize at least one person had never seen him play before, and would never see him play again. This would be their one "Michael Jordan Moment," and he was playing for them that night.

If a guy wants to sit, that's their right, but don't ever call a game people spend money to attend and share experiences that last a lifetime (good or bad) with their closest friends/family "meaningless."

My dad would expect the same from me. He would be wrong. Why does everybody think that "old school" is synonymous with "correct." Old school guys would probably have you shake off a concussion as "just getting your bell rung" too - we now know that's a terrible idea.

Maybe so.

I don't think old school is always correct...good thing for my customers.

But I think it depends on how you see his commitment. If you think he committed to play for Stanford through the bowl game...rather explicitly or implicitly, you might take issue with his decision. Specifically, for me, its kinda akin to the integrity test...will ya do the right thing when no one is watching? I guess this would be an ancillary to that...Will ya do the right thing when you have the power to choose not to without repercussions? Just how I break it down.

If his team mates are coming out saying they support him, I don't see how anyone can say they are turning their back on their team mates..

Lebron and company have not taken team flights in cities because they want a rest day even though they are healthy. They could easily play and just cut minutes back but they don't want to do that because it hurts their "stats" but if they don't play at all then bam.. To me that is selfish but for some reason we have less of an issue with this and more of an issue with a kid skipping a bowl game so he can get healthy and rest up for the draft so he can make the most money possible

(for the record)....it was Joe DiMaggio who had and said this sentiment first.

3 things here. #1 you owe a duty to your school. You got your scholarship, finish whatyou started. #2 meaningless? As far as I know these games go in the record book. #3 regardless of teammate support those are the guys who got you there in the first place. Your talent alone wasn't going to do it. After playing football for a long long time (and I have played baseball & hockey) I find its more of a brotherhood. And in that my thought is that I could never let my brothers down. Schembechler said it best, "The Team, The Team, The Team."

In the history of bowl games of how many career ending injuries have happened? I would like to see that stat. If you tell me a high percentage then I can weigh the options. My bet is that its low to almost non-existent.

I don't think a percentage would be an accurate way of looking at it. I mean, star players are certainly more at risk because of their usage. Jaylon also isn't the only examples of this either. Let's not forget Willis McGahee, who for all tense and purposes, ended his career by playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Runningbacks especially, have their careers on a kitchen timer, and every time they take a handoff they are one step closer to it all being over.
