I got told by the people sitting NEXT TO ME to sit down. I wasn't obstructing their view in anyway at all considering I was in the upper bowl between the 45 yard lines.

I was getting pissed so the guy I was with just took me to the student section.

ND Stadium is a JOKE.

I hope you went Rack Ball all over his ***!

Absolutely. This is why so many opposing teams have called out ND as an easy place to play.

It's a football game, not church or a lecture on French poetry. A wild, loud crowd can have a big effect on the game. Not every stadium is going to be Baton Rouge on a Saturday night, but this is ridiculous.

No because I was severely intoxicated and any altercation with an usher would have led me to the drunk tank. The last thing I need is to get arrested in my last year of law school.

Too bad. I completely understand your reasoning. What sucks is that idiots like that deserve to be told off.

Exactly. The usher told us they wanted to foster a family atmosphere so we should sit down. I was not happy, to say the least, after spending most of my games in or around the student section.

How is sitting down fostering a family atmosphere? Dumb.

I no longer go since being yelled at for cheering too loud. I love watching the game at home or with friends anyway. Hopefully some day things will change, but I doubt it. Far too many rich spoiled baby boomers and octogenarians.

I completely understand, but keep the faith.

It's a split crowd at times, but the loyal are diehard.

We know our ****, and we demand as much from the crowd as we do the players.

People will feed off your energy. Instead of getting pissed or ignoring when someone asks if you can sit, try to bring them into the better fold. It's a manageable scenario, especially if you get the energy up of those around you who just need a leader to keep it going. It might sound ridiculous, and you expect more of people, but ultimately, even fans need a coach, especially if they are on the opposite side of the student body.

I will say this... Notre Dame stadium is one of the best places on earth in the clutch.

I witnessed the stadium have a collective heart attack against Stanford last year, only to let out one of the most deafening cheers I have ever heard in my lifetime.

An apocalyptic/rapture type cheer.

People just need to remember it's the house that Rockne built, and that tradition is not a routine. It's all about genuine energy and love of the sport, love of Notre Dame.

Easier said than done. We definitely tried this but a lot of our fans are completely unreasonable.

And this.

I'm 24. I've been to every home game since I transferred in as a Sophomore and for the 2.5 seasons since I've graduated. Haven't missed one. But I'm about done with this place and the lack of enthusiasm by many of our "fans." It's disheartening and unfair to the student-athletes who put so much on the line week in and week out.

I'd rather sit at home than be told to sit down one more time. The only thing that can get me to change my mind is a video board that will help dictate an actual "football" atmosphere instead of a convent.

Man, the games I've been to at ND stadium weren't like the thunder dome atmosphere I have experienced at Raiders games but I've had a good time. Passing around a flask with new friends, heckling Purdue fans and the like. At the USC game someone a few rows back yelled for everyone up front to sit down. A USC fan promptly turned around and said "Hell no! This is USC Notre Dame. We're gonna stand the whole game". Everyone cheered and that was that. The end of the Pitt game last year was crazy too. You guys need to fight for your right to party. Lol.

We should probably take this pity party to another thread, gentlemen, out of respect for people who think we have a legit shot at signing Bo ;)

You're right. It's definitely not a guaranteed thing, and it used to upset me. Lately, I've tried a more positive approach, and it has helped on a couple of occasions. You can't win them all. I've been going to games since '92, and in the past two-three years, I've been asked to sit down four different games. For me, it's worth it for the great experiences I have had at the stadium. They outweigh the negatives by far, but I understand each person has a different experience... Hope you have better ones in the future.

Insert obligatory "Don't do it, Bo. Don't let 'em fool you. Come to Notre Dame. 40 years. Lessgo, man."

Frankly, I'm tired of people acting like Notre Dame has some horrible atmosphere. It's simply not true. USC people said it was the loudest place they had played in years.

Here's a news flash... you can still be loud sitting down... and the act of standing up for 100% of a game doesn't even really make sense. Who are you trying to intimidate when we have the ball on offense? Why would you want to stand during TV timeouts?

Notre Dame needs a jumbotron and it needs luxury boxes to get old rich people out of the important seats. Pumped in music was a step in the right direction and will hopefully continue to get better. For an 80k stadium though, it's pretty darn loud for important games when the team is putting a good product on the field. People who argue otherwise either don't know what they're talking about or want badly to prove how bad @ss of a fan they are vs all those sissies who sit sometimes.

What I want is an atmosphere that is loud and intimidating for our rivals. If USC says it's the loudest they've seen, then mission accomplished. For those of you want to go full retard... I mean... SEC... ask yourself if more "intimidation" is worth the corresponding increase of blackout drunk rednecks frequently getting into fights amongst themselves and engaging in other off-putting antics. I'm sorry, but I'll pass on the Preakness infield experience in favor of the one we currently have every time.

What do my relatives have to do with the recruitment of Bo?

Personally, I think there are several opportunities during a game in which to have a seat. TV timouts, regular timeouts, change of possessions, etc. Why not stand and cheer for your team?

Just watching ND on tv, it appears the crowd is in to the game pretty well. Of course, it isn't like being there but it still sounds pretty loud, especially at the appropriate times.

Yeah. I was at the USC game. It was pretty loud. Even louder at the Stanford game last year. And the USC game in 2011. I've been to some tomb-like games too (BC in 2011 springs to mind), but I do think it's better than it used to be. Especially for bigger games. Winning helps.

Not gonna lie, this is pretty sexy.

I'd really like to see them increase the capacity in the bowl. The last expansion added 21,000. Since the circumference was thus increased, they wouldn't need to expand as far out to get another ~20,000 in.

EDIT: Doing some verrrrrrrry rough math, the circumference of the highest row is ~28,000in (on Google Earth). Notre Dame's seat width is 18in (according to wikipedia). 28,000/18 gives you ~1,500. So I guess a mere 13-15 new rows would put ~100,000 bodies in that stadium. It's definitely doable without any sacrifice. It's ~40' out in every direction.

DOUBLE EDIT: And, now that I look closely... am I crazy or do I see a new ring of rows at the top of the bowl in that image? Oh God please yes!

I really wish you could still see TD Jesus from the stadium. That was a big disappointment when I went to the stadium for the first time.

Yes sir. 100% real.

Stadium expansion next on the docket for Notre Dame | Inside the Irish

Unfortunately that article says it'd only expand capacity to ~84,000. That'd make it the fifteen largest in the country. Weaksauce.

believe it or not, if you love Notre Dame and her football team, you don't want to expand that stadium much more than they have planned. We keep demand for tickets artificially high by limiting the quantity (compared to the Michigans, OSU's and Penn States of the world) which allows us to get TONS of donation money from people looking for higher priority in the ticket lottery and such. More money in the long run than we'd generate in increased ticket revenue, I believe. I'm pretty sure that donation money makes the actual football profit (43.2 million in 2011 and definitely more last year) look like drops in a bucket. As a student who relies on financial aid to attend ND, I personally don't want anything to change with that scenario.

I have a hard time seeing the addition of seats at the very top of the stadium being detrimental, especially when they'll add tons of luxury boxes/club seating too. I'm no expect on the matter though, but tend to believe that demand for premium seats is basically inelastic or whatever.

Oh it's not the premium seats that are the issue, I don't think you can price gouge too much on those no matter how desirable your ticket is, corporations and such don't care. It's maintaining the scarcity of the normal ticket, and even adding a top ring has a trickle-down effect, loosening up the nicer seats on stubhub and similar resale vendors. Why do you think Nebraska hasn't expanded their stadium? They could fill it without a doubt, but it's more important to make tickets scarce enough that people are willing to donate a lot to get preferred treatment. I think it makes sense for us to add another 5k or so, but you don't want to add so many that you even start to think about not selling out a game. You need that leverage to keep the donations flowing.

This is all true.

One thing I've noticed is that the bigger games have a completely different crowd. That should be expected, but I feel like people judge us on our Temple crowd. When young fans only have it in the budget to make one game a year, they aren't choosing Purdue or Temple. They are going to Oklahoma or USC. My sections have been 100% rowdier for the Oklahoma and USC games, especially the latter. This isn't the section where they seat the young alumni either. Most of the season tickets have been in the families for 50+ years. If my section is rowdy, then the rest of the stadium is as well.

Also standing up while on offense encourages making noise, which should get ND fans thrown out. Being loud while your team has the ball is a cardinal sin.
