Is Max completely over his hand injury? You guys think it's affecting his play anymore?

Dunno wtf omm is talking about regarding Shumate. He has been arguably our best DB this year. As for Red, man he's frustrating to watch, but unlike Schmidt, he has his good moments so I'm OK with riding the storm just hoping the light goes on and stays on one day.

There's a very legitimate reason Schmidt gets the blunt of the criticism from the fanbase. The secondary is what it is. Redfield is playing poorly, but there isn't any other option at this point outside of pulling him for Farley, which has it's own repercussions. We have legitimate options behind Schmidt, who's issues are both mental and physical. Plenty of options, yet we don't use them, not even in a platooning system.

I don't know but I think a majority of his play is mental and being out of position or making the wrong reads.

Maybe this will work to help remove the fog of confusion :

With Redfield it isn't about physical attributes. The kid just occasionally bails on his assignments and runs off to unoccupied areas of the field. Farley and Shumate have done it.

The difference between all of them and Schmidt is he is hardly ever less than 100% assignment correct. He may lack a little as far as wheels, or other physical attributes, but his head is always at the right place, in the game.

In fact now two people* that know way more that me have stated that some of what looks to be weakness in Schmidt's game, is actually those young bucks behind him frolicking on the field, missing their assignments. (And of course, with BVG's defense, it is hard for someone not trained as an analyst to catch who really missed the assignment.)

* Three if you include Kelly, because he purposely and clearly pointed out that Farley, not Schmidt missed the play on Boyd, in his press conference.

I agree with you on the Safety assessment. Why in the holy mother of God does it take us so freakin' long to develop these safeties? It's like they play subpar until their senior year when they finally become good (H Smith, Motta, Shumate). Smh, that can't continue, because next season, we may very well have a redshirt freshman next to Redfield, unless Sebastian returns for his 6th and stays healthy, which unfortunately is a major stretch.

I don't agree with you on Schmidt. A) He's been well below 100% on his assignments this year. Not that he's constantly missed them like Redfield, but he's missed a few this year. B) Just because he gets his assignment correct, doesn't mean he makes things easier for us. Schmidt can barely get to the point of attack and most of the time he's already too late, and even when he does get there on time, he's going to miss tackles or he's gonna get stonewalled by a blocker and once that happens, he's done. Neither of those situations helps our safeties at all. I'd rather have someone who occasionally misses the assignments, but also makes the play when he does get there and heck, sometimes even makes the play when he messes up. Jaylon is out there and he can make up for a ton of mistakes at MIKE and SAM. He's basically made a living cleaning up Schmidt and Onwualu's messes. That's the benefit of having such an athletic player that knows the plays. Use him and get the playmakers out there. I understood last year since Jaylon was still a sophomore learning a new playbook, but it's 2015 now, we're behind all that.

The fact that our free safety (which probably requires more film room hours than any position outside QB) is taking 18 credit hours during the season might be the reason he consistently is out of position.

Why aren't the frolicking safeties affecting Jaylon?

Posted in the bowl game thread, but he was sent home for a violation of team rules. Classic.

Now he has more time to go decide what color of pastel pants he'll wear for his next camera appearance. Way to go, Max.

What a fast track to a disappointing career

Yeah, seriously.

My buddy was telling me that he's heard that Max will miss next season anyway because he will be in China? Is that true? I vaguely recall hearing something about that previously but not sure if I heard anything authoritative. Anyway, if it is true, Max may never play another down for us.

Farley and Shumate will get the job done as well...

NO MORE INJURIES!!!

Max always seemed to me as a guy who had all the physical tools to be a good football player, but didn't really have much of a interest or dedication to it.

I mean this has to be one of the few cases where an athlete was more interested in academics than their sport.

Wouldn't even care. Start Mykelti Williams and Devin Studstill and don't look back. Baptism by fire

Epic turn of events. I guess I won't have to worry about throwing my remote when Max gets sucked up on the play action.

I never understood why the programs spoke up about who was injured or wont be at the game. To me all it does is give the opponent a spot to circle and send the plays at. After all, why wouldnt you target the backup who has much less experience or game time? Is there ever any benefit to announcing to the media so they can go right out and tell the world vs keeping it under wraps until kickoff?

Disappointed in and for Max. Good news is Farley hopefully gets the start and a well deserved chance to end his career with a big game.

I hope he got into a minor fender bender on the way to Scottsdale and the trooper discovered he had a suspended license and Kelly was forced to pull the trigger.

I am not sure about NCAA but for NFL you have to disclose prior or be fined by the NFL. A lot of people believe it is because the odds makers in vegas need that info to help put their line out there. If you think the NFL doesn't have hands in Vegas you are crazy, and I am sure ESPN and other big time players in NCAA do as well.
