Raised in Indiana, father played for ND, brother, Brandon, plays for Indiana. He knows Indiana weather for sure.

Sent from my Gateway using manual keyboard

Blair Kiel is his uncle.

What happens if we are in good shape with Kiel and he sets his announcement date sometime this summer and then Mauk commits to ND before Kiel chooses? How will this board react?

UTTER CHAOS!!!11!!1one!

Kidding aside.. I really hope Gunner commits somewhere (hopefully here!) sooner rather than later. He could be absolutely huge for us recruiting other offensive weapons... players like him and Tee are the type you build a class around.

I think most of this board would take gunner over Mauk. I dont know what i really think of Mauk it seems to change everyday.

I couldn't agree with you more. This is the kind of kid that makes other offensive players take notice and having someone like him on-board could only help our recruiting efforts with other offensive players. Would be great to get this kid.

I think that we need one of our geniuses to make a guesstimate on available scholarships for this cycle. I saw a low number some time ago, then went to some list which had graduating seniors plus potential 5th years etc on it, and my count wasn't pessimistic at all.

The relevant point to this thread is, maybe, that if something like what is suggested happened [i.e. Mauk accept], then with 22-23 scholarships likely, Kelly might still take Kiel when he pops. That is, it would put us in the same situation that we were in this year [with a very good class "in place" but with about two "flexible spots" to keep open for the Big Fish which bite late --- like Niklaus this year, and as we were hoping for people like Carlisle].

Of our seniors, we have Jonas Gray, Mike Ragone, Taylor Dever, Andrew Nuss, Trevor Robinson, Harrison Smith, Gary Gray, Robert Blanton, Darius Fleming, Steve Filer and Ethan Johnson who have no more eligibility. That leaves 11 spots.

Also, Dayne Crist, Deion Walker, John Goodman, Jamoris Slaughter, David Posluszny, Dan McCarthy, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Mike Golic, and Lane Clelland are potential fifth-years, with the bolded ones being the players I think will get fifth seasons.

The lone exception is Michael Floyd. If he plays this year, there's another scholarship available. If he is suspended and decides to return in 2012, that takes away a scholly for next year.

So as of now we have the potential for 21 free scholarships, but 17-18 is more likely.

I think it's actually 22 "max" right now as we only have 84 scholarships given out this year. But I think either or both of Walker/Goodman will get a 5th year (we will know by the end of the football season) so the likely amount is right where you set it at 17-19.... baring transfers or other stuff.

When all is said and done I think we will probably end up taking 19.

I'd forgotten this year's open scholly. Yes, 19 sounds about right.

Dan McCarthy is about the only potential fifth-year I could see them taking (aside from Crist/KLM/Slaughter who are just about guaranteed) because of our thin safety depth.

Updated his profile to reflect his offer list and his new rankings. I also really liked how in recent interviews Brian Kelly mentioned how he and Charlie Molnar have drastically overhauled how they designs schemes for all 4 qb's in his system to reflect his next man in mantra. I think this leaves us with a much better situation should something happen to whomever happens to win the starting qb position. Overall, it sounds like BK plans on using Dayne and Tommy as a 1 and 2 for pocket passing scenarios and Andrew and Everett as a 1 and 2 for situations where he wants his qb to have an option to use their feet to make a play. This is going to make our offense that much more difficult to prepare for and I love that it keeps everyone involved even if they aren't the starter.

Notre Dame appears to be favorite of two Watch List signal-callers. its on the rumor thing on ESPN. I am guessing they are talking about Gunner Kiel and Maty Mauk. Can anyone give a little update on what it is saying?

It's Kiel and Mauk, basically talking about what we all have been wondering. If we lead for both at this point (which is a definite possibility), are we simply waiting on who decides first, assuming we are only taking one QB. They cite Lemming's thought that Mauk is probably a more natural fit in the offense and that he seems more likely to commit first, but Kiel is the better overall prospect.

What a horrible dilemma to be in ;)

I was reading mgoblog and realized that a lot of Michigan fans do not want Mauk. There seems to be a general consensus that he is a spoiled brat with a bad attitude, whom has a dad that did everything in his power to make sure that the ball was in his hand as much as possible (onside kicks, always going for 2, etc) in efforts to pad his stats. Anybody know how much truth is to this?

Even if it isn't true, I really want Kiel more. I hate to think that either of these guys would end up at scUM. I have a feeling that Kiel would make us pay for four years if he went to Michigan, I don't get that feeling if they ended up with Mauk or Pike.

ESPN gave Kiel's section of the Insider article up.

1. Gunner Kiel, Columbus East High School (Indiana)

Teams in the mix: Alabama Crimson Tide, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Missouri Tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Tennessee Volunteers, Wisconsin Badgers

Kiel has a great first name for a QB. He also has a strong pedigree. His uncle, Blair Kiel, was a quarterback for Notre Dame and in the NFL, and his older brothers also are QBs -- Drew played at Illinois State and Dustin is with the Indiana Hoosiers. The younger Kiel's arm has wowed scouts.

Kiel's recruitment hasn't gotten crazy, but the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder joked that "it's getting there." Kiel said he is determined not to rush his thought process. "I want to make a decision whenever I'm ready," he said Tuesday night. "I'm trying to get to know these situations to find the perfect fit for me."

Kiel said he isn't one to surf around the web in hopes of getting a feel for what other QBs and colleges may be up to. "I don't really follow it," he said. "I'm just letting the cards play out and go with the flow."

Of course, it helps that he's probably on top of a bunch of schools' wish lists and may get the right of first refusal. Among the many programs in the mix are Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri.

There's been a lot of speculation that Kiel is leaning to Notre Dame (he said he rooted for the Irish growing up but added that he was always "a fairweather fan" and changed allegiances often depending on which team was hot). He said his next move is to fly to Oklahoma to check out the Sooners' program on Thursday.

Kiel figures to have an impact on other QBs in his class. According to the South Bend Tribune, one of them could be Maty Mauk, the younger brother of former Cincinnati Bearcats passer Ben Mauk, who played for Brian Kelly at UC. "I met with Maty Mauk recently and I definitely believe he's leaning to Notre Dame," Chicago-based recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "I think he would have committed to Notre Dame already had his mother not insisted on him visiting other schools.

"Gunner Kiel recently had a great visit to Notre Dame, enough so that I think at this early stage the Irish are either the favorites or even with the other favorites. If [the Irish] take Mauk early, they could lose Kiel."

It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

I have seen him play, know the offense, and know.his personality. Sad to.say Michigan fans are right by all accounts in my opinion. I would rather have Kiel. I get a feeling Mauk is very "me" first and.arrogant.

REally it doesnt matter about his(Mauk) attitude now, once he gets to ND, he will get a realty check, and if not he will transfer out, and we will still have 4 more than capable QBs.

Dont get me wrong I would love to get Gunner, he is going to be a great QB, but he is not better than what we have, if he doesnt mind watching until his JR/SR year, than great. I would rather ND sign superstar wr/rb/cb/s/dt.

Superstar QBs lead to super star WR.

QBs usually lead the draft class...
