TJ Davis' Composite Score is 3.25:s:, 26th CB. Unless he's a major sleeper and Kelly's really high on him, he doesn't look like a "make room" kinda guy.

Wright (4.25:s:, 3rd CB, 31st Nationally), Howard (4:s:, 4th CB, 34th Nationally), and Thompson (4.75:s:, 2nd S/ 1st ATH, 12th Nationally) all fit that bill though.

Putting too much stock in website rankings to make this determination. Look at the kids offer list, he is no sleeper. Also, based on this logic Tommy Schutt who is a borderline 5 star DT on Rivals would be considered a make room kinda guy. Ultimately, nothing is going to determine who we "make room for" and who we dont other than Brian Kelly. For all we know Brian Kelly liked TJ Davis more he does Yuri Wright.

Thus my caveat of "unless he's a major sleeper (which he might be) and Kelly likes him a lot". I'd consider him the CB equivalent of Justin Ferguson: offer sheet points to quality, but the ratings haven't caught up yet. You obviously take such guys early on, but once numbers start getting tight, every commit means you possibly turn down a blue chip recruit.

There are very few prospects who could demand a spot at any point they'd want. Shaq Thompson is one such recruit. Wright and Howard probably are too, unless we've already taken Davis. With our number crunch and the blue chippers with which we're still competitive, I don't think we take Davis at this point.

I hear ya man, my point was only that regardless of what the recruiting services think, if the following list of schools all want you, there is a chance you are good enough to hold a spot for....and for all we know coach kelly could like TJ more than say Yuri Wright.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Notre Dame, TCU, LSU, Georgia, Miami, Nebraska, Florida, Clemson, Arkansas, Ohio State, North Carolina, South Carolina and others. That is some offer list.

I think looking back at what happened with Schutt, Tommy is pretty much a DT. In the secondary a guy like Yuri Wright or TJ Davis could play CB or either safety spot. That extra flexibility increases the likelihood a guy like Davis could be taken when somebody like Terry Richardon who is strictly a corner, would not be.

Just engaging you in some healthy discussion...

Agreed. I appreciate it.

I wasn't arguing against Davis' quality, but whether or not he's of "hold a spot open" quality. In my mind, that means we make room for the kid whenever he wants to commit, even if it's on NSD. And for late commits, "make room" usually involves denying a 5th year to a productive senior.

Let's say it's NSD and we're sitting at 22 commits, which leaves room for 5Ys for Crist, Cave, Cwynar, KLM, and Slaughter. If Shaq Thompson wants to commit on NSD in that scenario, I have no doubt that we'd take him and deny one of the seniors I just listed, painful though it may be. Would we do that for Davis? I don't think so.

I think looking back at what happened with Schutt, Tommy is pretty much a DT.

I was thinking about this earlier, and I agree. We pretty much have three types of DL: SDE, WDE, and DT. Our depth at DT, meaning those guys who play strictly 0-3 tech, is much better than most of us imagined at the time, which is why we turned down Schutt.

In the secondary a guy like Yuri Wright or TJ Davis could play CB or either safety spot. That extra flexibility increases the likelihood a guy like Davis could be taken when somebody like Terry Richardon who is strictly a corner, would not be.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Diaco's hybrid system involves a lot of flexibility and swing roles for the front seven, but not so much the secondary. Our depth at S isn't nearly as scary as CB; if we bring Davis in, it'll be as a CB, and he'd be very likely to stay there.

The relevant portion:

Notre Dame: "Actually the weather doesn't bother me. I like snow and I go to the North annually. Coach [Brian] Kelly is bringing great players to Notre Dame and I got to hang out with a few of them in Oregon."

Not exactly a glowing review; especially from a guy who recently claimed we were his top school. Though we can infer from his answer that the interviewer was probably anti-ND, so take from it what you will.

I'd take Davis if he were to decide he wants to be Irish. He's got one hell of an offer list, which really speaks volumes about how good this kid really is.

New Leader For Davis?

appears we no longer lead.

“Right now, Florida State has a little lead, but I’m definitely going back and forth,” the four-star ESPN prospect said. “Just talking to the coaches every day and everything and I haven’t really got a chance to work with some of the Notre Dame coaches, that’s why I think Florida State has a little bit of an edge right now.

“I went to a camp and got to work with Coach (Mark) Stoops and see how he coaches me other than just watching him coaching college athletes. I think that’s why they’ve got the edge right now.”

Don't see any surprise there. ND has a better commitment list at this point so competition is less at FSU right. ND's got 2 Top 10 CBs and still in play with a couple more. FSU has no CBs.

FSU also has the self acknowledged coach familarity edge at this time.

Normally when a kid makes a spur of the moment decision like this, it's far from over.

Either that or he just got his check in the mail.

I don't know why we care. He would just take a spot that I'd much rather go to one of some 10-15 other recruits.
