No he played on ST.

ok i see so in essence, he's taking a RS year as an upperclassman. Sneakily i have done this on NCAA Football a few times. Hope he has a good final year and can get some starting experience ala Lo Wood this year.

He was never going to be asked back for a 5th year with the scholarship crunch, so maybe he's allowed to scout team it before transferring somewhere for a 5th year? Just a guess.

I think he would have ended up with a 5th year had he stayed out of trouble We are desperate for depth, and he would have gotten some serious minutes.

IMO I don't think he would. We're going to need to be picky with our 5th years right now barring some transfers before NSD.

If you check out the roster projection thread, we're facing a numbers pinch. We have 8 spots remaining for 5th years and uncommitted guys. Between Committed Recruits, 1st Year players, 2nd Year players, and 3rd Year players, we have 77 total guys projected to be on the roster barring a transfer or a decommit.

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football-recruiting/190805-roster-projections.html

LAX summed up what we're looking like for the remaining 8 spots, and I tend to agree with his opinion:

This thread is so excellent.

Here are your likely 5th years, IMO:
Golson
Martin
Carlisle
Schmidt

Which then gives us 4 remaining spots for crootin'... that's very tight. This is by far the deepest 5th year class I've seen. Could easily justify 10 of those guys.

Sooo Coney + Jamabo/Brossette + S + best available?

If we did this, that would mean we're denying Farley, Hegarty, Hanratty, Ishaq, Grace, and Councell. Doesn't even account for if DD wants back in or if Collinsworth pursues a 6th year.

Do you guys think Golson would come back? What is his draft projection as of now? And would he be accepted into a grad program for a 5th year after the academic violation in 2013?

Just to add to above. We will most likely have some other sort of deflection in the off-season that would allow for another 5th year/recruit.

You are absolutely right. And yet somehow this always seems to work out. As I typed in another thread, Kelly has never turned away a 5th year who has made any significant on-field contribution. This year would be the first time. Doesn't mean it won't happen, but I won't worry about it until NSD at the earliest, maybe not till we get through spring practice.

I keep a running tally of roster spots and this is what I have right now.

As far as red-shirts, Golson, Martin, Farley, and Schmidt are bet-the-house shoe-ins. Hegarty, and Williams are extremely likely as well.

That means if we assume Tillery comes, which I am, we have 3 remaining spots.

However, we know we will take a second RB and a sixth DB for sure. (84)

We are also extremely likely to take third LB (Coney), a fourth WR (ESB). (86)

And I think we's also take the Alabama comitt DE if he'd come and Alize Jones. (88).

Long story short, I think we are prepared to "oversign" as many as 3 right now (most likely 1 or 2). If Hardy had come back, I think he would have taken that 6th DB spot, keeping the numbers basically the same.

I would be shocked if he got a 4 year scholarship, unless it was part of the deal to get his dad here.

Its one thing to have a full time scout QB when you have 3 QBs on the roster and lots of roster space. But when you have 4 and its a crunch?

Do you guys think Golson would come back? And would he be accepted into a grad program for a 5th year after the academic violation in 2013?

I do not think he is ready for the league and I do think he could benefit from another year of college football ... but you never know if events will transpire that make leaving the right decision.

Niklas talked to people in the NFL and determined that his 1st or 2nd round grade was good enough to go pro on, even though he would have continued to improve in college. If Golson has a great year this year, then he may decide that his draft stock isn't going to get any higher, or that the risk of injuring himself isn't worth whatever chance there is that he might improve his draft stock, and just go ahead and go pro. You just never know.

And would he be accepted into a grad program for a 5th year after the academic violation in 2013?

I have absolutely no doubt that he could come back for a 5th year if he wanted to. People make too much of our 5th year application process.

Hmm, very interesting.

Atkinson's situation is different from Hardy's though, because Atkinson HAS to sit this year to preserve eligibility for a 5th year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hardy redshirted his freshman year, so we can use him as an emergency safety if we have to without ruining his plans to transfer and play a 5th year elsewhere.

Correct, but neither can play to achieve their goal of playing a 5th year. Atkinson played a freshman so if he plays in 2014, that would be his 4th year of elig. If Hardy plays this year, he would need to sit out a year and that year sitting would wipe him out of elig, unless Hardy transfers D1aa or D2.

I agree that he could benefit from another year, especially with his turnover numbers being what they are, but the depth ND has at QB could also push him out. I'm not sure how ready Zaire and Kizer are, but I would have to imagine Zaire would be ready, pressuring Golson to jump to the NFL. I don't know if anyone has any insight.

Not quite. If Hardy graduates, he can transfer without sitting out a year.

If he doesn't graduate, but stays enrolled for this semester, he effectively can't transfer to another school because his 5-year clock will expire before he sits out his two-semester "year in residence" at the new institution -- unless, as you say, he transfers to FCS or below.

Whether he plays this year or not doesn't matter either way. Basically, if he wants to transfer to an FBS school, he has to graduate from ND first.

Sweeeet! He could definitely come in handy with how thin we are at safety. Hopefully Collinsworth is good to go but after the starters and then Collinsworth and Tranquill, Hardy has to be next man in, right? I suppose they could always move Farley back there in emergency situations.

Yes. Kelly said in his presser yesterday that it was strictly an issue with getting him cleared through the NCAA. He's already been cleared by ND.
