God's Good Blessings to you, Chris; you're a fine young man. I hope you become an All-American safety some day.

Regarding whether Chris has "dangerous" insider info: hardly. BYU will have ten games of tape by the time that we play them, and Kelly will game scheme some completely manipulative stuff. He can give them nothing that they couldn't get on their own, and cannot give them what Kelly does new. Any player insider notes [Hey! Watch out for that Nix guy!] will be pretty obvious by then, and any injury reports will be long old news.

Some of you guys are watching too much internet conspiracy docudrama.

Yeah, that's really not the point. If that's all that mattered, why would the Patriots have bothered with Spy Gate and stealing signals in the first place? He'll potentially know the entire playbook on both O and D... and especially when it comes to D, knowing pre-snap what the D is going to do is a HUGE factor in whether an offensive play is successful.

Plus he'll know strengths and weakness of every player much more than could possibly be gleaned in a day or two of film study by coaches. I don't now why you think this isn't relevant.

Because Kelly and Diaco know all this too.

And, regarding him knowing anything significant about strengths and weaknesses of players, I'll agree to disagree that what he would know from august camp would have use.

I realize Badger's not a huge loss in terms of (projected) production, but these transfers are getting a bit worrisome. This transfer leaves us, by my count, with 77 healthy scholarship players heading into Temple, not to mention any injuries we sustain throughout the season to lower that number further. I have total faith in Kelly and Co, but simple lack of numbers is one of the few things in football a great staff can't coach around.

If IIRC that is 5 more healthy players than last year.

SOP in these circumstances is no transfer to any school on current or future schedules. That Badger was allowed to choose BYU indicates either: (1) that Kelly holds him in unusually high regard; or (2) that Kelly doesn't expect much trouble from BYU. Maybe some combination of the two.

76, actually.

Check out the holes in the 2012 class. And it started out with such promise...

True. But if you're going to lose someone, a low-on-the-depth-chart upperclassman at a position with more numbers than you need is not a bad place to lose them in. He probably wasn't going to see the field beyond maybe special teams.
And on the flip side we now have another scholarship to give next year to a player who'll be more likely to contribute. (I know that sounds harsh, but so's the 85-man limit.)

There's only about 3 to 4 players on this team that it wouldn't upset me if they transferred and Chris Badger is one of them. Best of luck to him at BYU.

Is this the proper thread for this discussion or should we be discussing in the Transfer Time thread? Kuehnja, any thoughts? Too soon?

My rule is if you've had 2 hair cuts, it's no longer too soon. But in this case, too soon! Lol.

Yeah, except he has been in meetings for all of camp and can give that info to BYU. Talk about one hell of a scouting report....

Wish he had left earlier. Good kid, never going to contribute with the other safeties on the depth chart. And now we're down a warm body for scout team, special teams, etc.

Didn't even think about that. Good point.

Fwiw, Dan Murphy at BGI says "family issues" are the reason for the transfer. He has not heard that BYU is the destination--is Jake Brown the only one reporting that?--but he said he wouldn't be surprised if that's the case, given that Badger apparently wants to be closer to home. Again, tifwiw

EDIT: no, BYU is being reported everywhere ... Come on Dan, get with it.

Love that this kid was "the safety" and now it's "no big deal if he transfers"

LOL.

Best of luck to him.

I always hate to see a guy leave ND too, but when I heard Kelly say that the staff has "noticed" Eilar Hardy and John Turner, without mentioning Badger, I wondered if his days were numbered.

Best of luck to him in Utah. Great guy who just ran into a logjam at his position.

Best of luck to him. Seems like a really solid young man. Wishing him nothing but the best, wherever he lands.

Collinsworth signed at the same time as Badger and since we've added Farley, Hardy, Baratti, Shumate, Turner, Prosise (safety for a bit), and Redfield. That's a large group of safeties and someone was bound to lose out. Being away from the game for 2 years probably didn't help. I wish nothing but the best for Badger.

Religious reasons? The NCAA probably doesn't want to mess with that.

Ex-Notre Dame DB Chris Badger eligible immediately for BYU - CBSSports.com

By Chip Patterson
9/19/13

...

Badger began practicing with the Cougars in late August, getting accustomed to his new team while the school filed a waiver request on his behalf. The defensive back sat out 2012 at Notre Dame after his LDS mission, officially signing with the Fighting Irish in Aug. 2010.

Badger's addition adds much-needed depth to the BYU defense; a unit that has suffered the loss of multiple starters due to injuries and team rules violations. He has not played a competitive snap since wrapping his high school career in 2009, but the upside is that, eligibility-wise, Badger is only a redshirt freshman.

I could understand this if Badger had returned from his mission and immediately enrolled in a school other than ND. He had actually been "sitting out" while on his mission. But then he returned to ND for a semester. The 5 year clock mission waiver is standard but he was granted a transfer waiver directly from school to school in Div 1 like a freshman signee that had not yet attended class. He had. That's not a religious issue.

I remember reading his family had some health problems preventing them from travelling IIRC. Guessing that was the basis of the waiver.
