This guy's highlight tape is sick. His quarterback sucks and he has to battle for every pass. The most impressive highlight is a tremendous catch on a slant, Smith slips on the turf, falls to his knees, leaps off of his knees, falls backward and makes an impressive catch. I can't wait to see him on the fade routes from Clausen in 2010.

He looks good, however he will never catch a pass from jimmy. He will not play as a freshman and jimmy will be gone by the time that smith plays.

Agreed. I think Floyd has a much better work ethic and will come into camp as a stud, not an overweight receiver wearing a number in the 60's...

Also, team has new coaching staff/quarterback, which both looked horrible. Smith was not getting the touches he should have, even when streaking down the field wide open, waving his hands. Coach looked like he wanted to use him more as a decoy. The team they played is not that great but interestingly has some former ND football players coaching it, including Darius Walker, helping out.

60 receptions for exactly 1000 yards as a senior. He had 51 catches for 1071 yards as a junior.

YouTube - Gehrig Dieter Washington HS Game #1 2010

Smith is good kid but never would go over the middle to get a ball. His catches were based on out jumping small corners. #4 was all over the field on both sides of ball.
Gman is a stud

Panther, doesn't look like you've seen much of Daniel Smith. Yes, he does catch balls by out jumping the "small" corners. But let's be candid, so did Stovall, McKnight, Shark, Tate, and Floyd. That's the primary reason to recruit "tall" reveivers and create mismatches.

But if you watch that video you'll see Smith makes catches on the sidelines, downfield, AND over the middle. He isn't a one act pony. He makes nice catches with his back to the QB AND his back to the defenders - in traffic. I thought the most impressive catch was at the 3:50 mark where his feet come out from under him and slips to the ground but bounces up and with outstretched arms makes a tremendous catch. Smith makes a lot of his catches with his hands - away from his body. Something that many talented HS receivers don't do.

Some coaches recruit kids that have the raw tools to play the game...and then the coach molds the kid to their strenghts. I think Daniel is going to be a good player at ND...tall, athletic, and a GREAT attitude.

He seems like the exact kind of kid that gets over-looked by the recruiting services: local Indiana kid with excellent game but less than stellar measurables (here avg. WR speed) and so they just forget about him. The kid is a is a big, solid athlete with great hands and good awareness: he is going to be good

He also committed to ND very early, actually as soon as he was offered on junior day, and didn't attend any camps. Recruiting services (and many ND fans, sadly) just forgot about him. He would have been offered by many more schools had he not committed early and been so solid to ND.

The same thing happened with Christian Lombard. I would get annoyed at ND fans who would forget about this stud when talking about last year's class, b/c a lot of people forgot abut him as he was our first commit (not including Chris The Clown Martin). Now Christian is fighting hard to make the 2 deep already, when most assumed he'd redshirt (which I hope he does to get stronger/more seasoned).

With all the freshman hype and all the WR 'drama'/unknown plus getting hurt in the spring Daniel fell off the radar some. I really want to see him come up big in a few games. If we get him on track now, then add him with Davaris, Farley, maybe GAIII and hopefully Ferguson and Greenbury (among others) wow...fun fun fun

Leg is getting better but not expected back until USC. Kelly thinks he can help improve special teams.

I'm really excited to see what he can offer. I like that the article mentions how he's really been forgotten about (by everyone besides the coaching staff that is), and I really feel like he's going to be valuable to have next year because of his size. Man, just excited to see what this offense can do in Year 3!

If we have a QB... This team is one decent QB away from being a BCS bowl caliber team, I have never doubted that. Many of the skill players are being overlooked, but if they have a better QB, they could shine...

Just like the Colts with Peyton Manning,, I doubt we will get a Manning type of player, but my point is that a better QB can make those around him look much better, show their true potential...
