The screen call for TD on the first drive of the Stanford game sealed the promotion.

A blind giraffe could have hired him.I would have much rather he get the Northwestern job and learned the ropes. Amateur hour if he gets the job.

Sounds like he's been getting on the job training since Virginia Tech. Seems like a good hire who already knows about Notre Dame and it's challenges.

4 games = experience? Come on we're Notre Dame not Boston College. This is a low hanging fruit hire that BK can control (I don't care that he yelled at BK).

Tommy may be a great OC, but he may also be horrible. To big of a risk to take a chance on someone who will need on the job training.

I like Tom(my)and glad he is on staff. But as OC? Not yet. Plus I bet that this means Quinn is still OL coach because BK won't listen to an inexperienced coordinator.

It's a shame we don't have a HC that was once considered an offensive whiz. It would be unfortunate if Tommy were to become OC and fail, we may never score points again.

He did have 10 years coaching experience. Tommy doesn't have that.

He's got 5 years as a coach or assistant across multiple stops, and 4 years playing in the system in addition to knowing the brand and challenges/expectations. That's pretty comparable.

I would be interested to see Tommy’s coaching experience compared to Lincoln Riley’s coaching experience before Lincoln got the OU OC job.

Long was an OC for one season at Memphis. Tommy has 8 less games experience calling plays if were to believe what a lot new all along about Long losing play calling duties. We are in different times now. Tommy is going to be just fine.

At some point people will realize you hire people, not resumes.

Well, probably not. But I can hope.

Long was OC for one season at Memphis but he did not call plays. Norvell still held that power so ND was his first role where he could actually call the plays.

As a former hiring manager for Express Personnel (went through thousands of resumes) I would have to look at resumes to get to the person. Then when I would meet the person I would see if he had the qualifications and if he would fit with the organization. I would never hire someone who was so wet behind their ears that they could cost my branch thousands of dollars. First, I want to know can they do the job? Then how will this person work in the environment and will he thrive. Do not undervalue a good resume.

I hope some day people realize how important resumes are and not mail in the process. One can hope, but I bet it won't change (everyone wants to start at the top).

So what you're saying is Tommy has 4-5 more games of experience calling plays than Long did?

As long as Tommy can gel better with Kelly (which I'm assuming is a given, factoring their relationship), ND will be better off.

Tommy knows the game, always has. It's in his DNA. Kelly can coach offense. They'll play off each other well...

The "bad" Kelly was when he was focusing on offense, while having mediocre to awful DCs.

Now that he has stability and "the guy" over on that side, he can dedicate more time to the Tommy side of things.

Just because Kelly made mistakes in the past with the offense, doesn't mean that things are "the exact same" this time. This is a unique occurrence that we haven't seen before.

Gotta hope Vince Marrow can come coach TE’s! That would be so cool to add another big time recruiter. Between Rees, Lance Taylor, Del Alexander, Jeff Quinn and potentially Marrow that would be a crazy good recruiting staff. Obviously remains to be seen whether they can coach but the recruiting aspect should be solid. The TE and CB hires will be huge.

Tony Dungy was just taking about this last weekend.

Said beyond the X's and O's you need great leaders and motivators.

Dabo was an interim coach with no experience that no one wanted when he was hired. And there are hundreds of examples of coaching hires like that. We could also talk about how people like BVG have great resumes but we know enough now to understand how the accolades are misleading about his quality as a coach.

IMO, only reason to hire a "big name" in 2019 is if you think it can help you in recruiting. Otherwise, you hire who you think will be the most successful and then the results take care of themselves. Emphasize fit and upside over everything else, and don't be afraid to pull the plug immediately if the coach isn't up to standard.

If Rees gets hired, people are going to gnash their teeth over it. The reality is:
1. He was sought after for other OC jobs.
2. The odds of ND winning 10+ games next year go way up if you're not trying to put in a brand new system.
3. The odds of players leaving and/or an implosion go way up if you make major changes.

This is very similar to when Elko left and Lea was retained for continuity despite being completely unproven. That worked out extremely well. With Rees, he has excelled so far in his audition and will have another opportunity against ISU to show what he can do. I am 100% behind the hire if that's the direction they go.

I like it. Hope it happens. Let's see if Long was really the only thing getting in the way of this offense hitting a completely different level.

Makes me more optimistic our offense shows up on the 28th - they will want to show well for Reesus.
