Shumate plays RB in HS too if Im not mistaken...hmmmm, the next Jeff Burris? ;)

They are about the same size. I can only hope half our secondary plays with the passion and fire from back then. I f he can do it, sign him up. I wanna see opposing WRs get lit up time after time.

Jeff was a few years older than me but we went to the same high school. He was an unbelieveable RB in HS. Lou showed up and said you will be a safety and help out on goal line and special teams and Jeff took right to it. Lou recruited athletes and I like that BK is doing the same thing. I think there are several kids on the roster that could pull double duty due to their athleticism but we will see.
Love Jeff Burris...one of my all time favorite players! These young kids now a days have no idea what a start he was.

Burris was one of Vinny Cerrato's recruits. Cerrato's last ND recruiting class graduated in 1993. Check ND's W/L Record since then regardless of who was head coach.

I expect Shumate will be one of those athletes to Shake Down The Thunder and restore ND to its proper place in the football world.

Man those Holtz teams were ridiculous. I was just an infant at the time but I can remember my dad, a massive ND fan, sitting me down and having me watch some of those dominant teams. It's sad to think that it's been that long since ND was such a major force on the national scene, but it's also refreshing and encouraging to be able to talk about a new era in ND football now, especially with athletes like Shumate on the way. I love being able to link a great era for football to something that all of us on this board can see, talk about, and share together right now.

I can not wait to see #6 flying down the field on ST next year. Even though I am a BC Crusader fan I have a feeling Elijah is going to be my favorite new Irishman.

Cheering for the victim, now?

Or were you quoting me without attribution?

I hijacked my first thread and I am only 20+ posts in. Took me a while to find this.

I went back and looked at the 1993 All-American list and there were 4 from ND:

Jeff Burris, Bobby Taylor (DBs)
Bryant Young (DL)
Aaron Taylor (OT)

My grandfather was the one who beat it into me. I can still remember him during the Faust years. I thought he was going to go to South Bend and personnaly remove Faust after some of those games....:upset:

I was just thinking "what kind of respectable person wears an Orlando Magic hat?" That could be the most embarrassing franchise in sports right now (my Red Sox aren't far behind, unfortunately).

No doubt the Magic are horrible...I'm not a big NBA fan I prefer college basketball, but I never pass up a chance to go see a game downtown. Its always a good time!

It could be but it isn't. I heard Shumate had a Red Sox hat but he burned it while mumbling "15-9! How do you blow a 9 run lead" and "who trades for an .070 hitter to bolster their outfield?" The Magic is a breath of fresh air by comparison.

I hope Shumate was watching the Spring Game. I expect when he crashes into the backfield and hits a ball carrier as he's taking the handoff that the ball carrier will be wrapped and dropped and not 30 yds downfield by somebody else.

Six would work as long as we don't need him and Theo on the field at the same time.

Freebie from some site I happened to come across. Kid is going to be awesome.

Michigan. Miami. Oklahoma. Nebraska. They (and about a dozen other top programs) all wanted touted safety Elijah Shumate, a battering ram out of Don Bosco Prep, New Jersey’s top football training ground. Landing the vaunted defensive back, one of five new safeties to enter the depth chart come this summer, was the best recruiting grab at the position since Tom Zbikowski, a near decade drought since landing an elite safety, giving you an idea of just how badly the Irish needed to bring in a top-flight enforcer that can anchor the backend of the defense.

While I'm excited about Shumate's projections, the article seems to overlook a certain 1st rounder we just had picked from the state of Tennessee.

Really.... Shumate looks to be a terrific player and I am anxious to see how Diaco/Elliott employ his talents,... but Harrison, I suppose, will never catch a break. ... And, what the heck, the elder McCarthy and Bruton were darn good too. In my recent experience we have always had a very good safety back there --- something we cannot say for many other positions over the past decade. What say we rather say: Hail Elijah! Welcome to the school that consistently has fine safety play [ Jamoris Slaughter, anyone?].

Super pumped about Jamoris this year. I expect Elijah to make a statement during his years at ND as well.

Chris Badger and Collinsworth shouldn't be overlooked just yet either.

I will agree with Austin that he will be a player...but I am a bit hesitant to include Badger.

Austin has displayed toughness throughout his time on special teams and I think that will be a launching pad for him this upcoming year, but with Badger...the time off from football concerns me. He seems like a hard working kid that will get himself back to par...just may take a while.

Harrison was ranked around the 25th best safety when he came out. Shumate is a consensus top 8 safety. This obviously means nothing yet but that is all Arnold was saying. Just more highly touted.

ppl are reading too much into what was stated. yes i'll be the first to agree that we've had very good safety play in the recent past. however, none of those guys mentioned were as highly touted as shumate is out of high school. imo

What about Jamoris Slaughter? He was a top 150 player coming out of high school. Most publications had him as a safety a one or two at corner. but, still to my point Slaughter was the biggest safety prospect since Zibbi.

I think Shumate quickly becomes a force in the secondary... Maybe getting the starting job for the 2013 season, not sure how much playing time he will get this year though.
