Intriguing Athlete / WR prospect whom is seemingly friends with recent ND QB commit Malik Zaire, who has reached out to Sebastian and both hope ND takes an interest in him (as do I),

Wrap: NLA Vegas Elite 7on7

The stock of wide receiver Sebastian LaRue (Santa Monica, Calif.) has risen quite a bit in recent weeks as he now holds 17 offers. He’s just extremely smooth with and without the ball in his hands and when he turns on the jets, there aren’t many that can stay with him. He’s also an excellent route runner, which leads us to believe he will probably play receiver in college. Arizona State, UCLA and USC are the three teams that seem to have the best shot early, but others are in the mix as well. Oklahoma recently offered and he would be an outstanding fit for that system.

Per STLDomer on Malik and Sebastian's twitter convo:

Malik has been hitting up ND targets and friends on Twitter:

“@SebastianLarue1: @MalikZaire6 nice, but I have no offer from them.”

“@MalikZaire6: @SebastianLarue1 dag we could really use u!”

“@SebastianLarue1: @MalikZaire6 talk to them.”

I can't believe that our staff didn't already offer this kid? Maybe now that we got Malik, we can offer Sebastien. If he is good enough for Oklahoma, then i'm in.

I love him. I love him more than Bryce Treggs. I even love him more than Devonte Neal. I really hope this kid gets an offer. I have a woolybug-gunner-esque man crush on this guy.

Good highlights. He doesn't have D Neal's burst/explosion but a great athlete.

I don't know about that. It's really splitting hairs but this guy is as explosive as anyone I can think of. He's bigger than Neal, too.

I'm shocked this kid, from a pipleine area, does not have an offer from us. I hope they extend one asap.

The only thing that pops up in my mind is a possibility of academic issues. I see Stanford hasn't offered either. I know there are conditional offers from time to time so this theory could be off.. Maybe they haven't seen his film yet????

I was wondering the same, if it has to do with academics, none of the schools on the offer list seem to be exactly academic studs (michigan is decent, but they still suck at life)... I hope we are able to offer him because he looks like a stud and I like how Malik is working him

Santa Monica is a pipeline area? Can you refresh me on who's come through that pipeline to ND?

I have no idea what his grades/academic standing is but color me quite skeptical. He might be a 4.0 student than again his transcript might just look like a ransom note. He's apparently in his 3rd high school.

According to a J.C. Shurburtt article dated 12 MONTHS AGO, LaRue was enrolled in Dominquez HS in Compton then and the year before that he was enrolled in Orange Lutheran in Anaheim. Now he's in Santa Monica. Three different high schools in three different cities in three seasons. For the geographically unfamiliar, Anaheim is about 20 ESE of Compton while Santa Monica is about 20 miles to the SW.

Perhaps Dad changes jobs annually and the family moves preseason. Or perhaps he jumps HS to HS looking for the right offense and PT. I'll leave it that the multiple schools were a product of family move/PT and not academically driven.

The schools on that offer list may have a Rhodes Scholar or even astronauts on their alumni roles but when it comes to football they're lowest common denominator schools. IF the NCAA Clearinghouse passes 'em, they'll take 'em and hide 'em somewhere in the student body trying to keep 'em eligible.

ND is a tad more demanding. Anybody remember "Online Spanish Courses" last recruiting cycle? Three high schools in three years is an Admissions Officer's Black Hole. ND Admissions is going to want details on the classes at School A, and how much of them School B accepted, then how well they mesh with School's B courses, and then the same all over again for School C. And ND Admissions has to make a determination then on academic qualifications and the likelihood of success at ND without benefit of a Rosetta Stone to interpet multiple transcripts.

Recruiting Update: Sebastian LaRue

JC Shurburtt 247

...

He is enrolled at Dominguez currently, but isn’t positive he will remain.

“I hear it’s a good program,” he said. “They went to the second round last year. They do run the Wing T on offense, so that may be a question right now. If they changed to the spread, then I will pursue playing here. The coaches are real nice guys.”

LaRue plans to participate with several current members of the Dominguez football team next week at the Badger Sport 7-on-7 Elite in Las Vegas.

As for recruiting, LaRue would like to remain in the region.

I’m really interested in Pac-12 schools,” he said. “I am trying to stay close to home pretty much. I don’t want to go too far away, but whatever comes to me. The most important thing is academics. I want to get a great education. The second thing would be the coaching and the vibe from the school - what kind of feeling I get.”

Any idea how long he stayed at Dominguez HS? because that may be the reason. Dominguez is arguably the worst school in LA

Only info I had was in the Shurburtt piece. I didn't think Dominguez was a step up but figured I'd leave that for NDinL.A., ACamp, or one of the other locals (and teachers) to comment on the schools.

Back in '04 Anthony Vernaglia came to ND from Orange Lutheran.

Compton and Anaheim aren't exactly the nicest places to live either. Oh well, there's a reason ND didn't offer and while we may not like it, it comes with the territory.

We took Shaq Evans right out of the hood. His high-school isn't going to keep him from getting an offer. His performance will. Hopefully he's above par.

Schools vary greatly. An 11th grade English class at one school can be the equivalent of an 8th grade level or lower level at another school. Above par at one school can be below par in the ND freshman class. High school cirricula keep kids out of ND every year. IF their two years of Foreign Language amount to counting to 10 and asking what time it is, that won't be cutting it at ND. IF their math classes, 4 years, amount to Algebra I, despite a course title of Pre-Calculus, that won't be cutting it.

ND's tutoring program can help teach a student to focus, how to take class notes, how to study, how to take a test, but it doesn't make up for years of deficient coursework regardless of the effort of the individual.

Notre Dame isn't Michigan, ask Harbaugh. A motivated student athlete with the proper qualifications can do well at ND. Those without the proper qualifications don't get past Admissions. ND Admissions has a pretty good track record in figuring that out.

Let's hope that there aren't any academic issues that have scared us away. Kid seems like a great athlete, and you can simply never have enough of those.

This is exactly what popped into my mind reading through this thread, and you beat me to it. So, reps for that. I am not into calling a kid out for academic issues without having any knowledge, but I will say that if the staff hasn't offered yet it probably isn't because they haven't heard of him. Whether they ultimately do or don't, I'm sure they'll have their reasons either way.

His highlight film is pretty outstanding. Hate to play the comparison game, but the way he gets up to grab the fade as a shorter guy reminded me a lot of Golden Tate. It looks like he has strong hands and really good leg strength.

Really hope we offer him soon. Don't wanna be playing against him if he ends up at Michigan.

my guess is that they are holding out for a big-time WR for that 3rd spot...
