Like the rest of the country, Notre Dame is two days away from completing its 2012 recruiting class; national signing day is on Wednesday, so the program will spend the next two days putting a bow on its class and checking and rechecking its fax machine. The Irish, like most schools that recruit on a national level, are still awaiting several recruits’ final decision. And like most, the Irish have already enrolled a few recruits from this class, with three – all high school prospects – on campus and eligible to participate in spring ball. One is Gunner Kiel, the five-star quarterback prospect who was committed to Indiana and L.S.U. at various points during his senior season before opting for Brian Kelly and South Bend.

With the benefit of hindsight, it’s difficult to imagine Kiel having gone anywhere but Notre Dame. He’s local, having gone to high school in nearby Columbus. He’s a premier quarterback prospect, with offers from coast to coast, and choosing the Irish would unite a prospect with his skill set with Kelly’s quarterback-friendly system.

Above all else, the Irish clearly need a quarterback – not just now, but also for the foreseeable future. Perhaps no other national program in the country could provide a better opportunity for a substantial role. L.S.U. has Zach Mettenberger ready to roll in 2012. A.J. McCarron has two more years left as the starter at Alabama. Kiel would have started immediately at Indiana and Vanderbilt, but Notre Dame, as we know, trumps both in terms of national prestige.

And Tommy Rees isn’t the future at the position for Notre Dame; he may be the present, but one wonders how greater a progression he can make in this offense – whether he’s hit his ceiling, in other words. Kelly has another pair of young options in Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson, but neither enrolled with the sort of fanfare that accompanies Kiel’s arrival.

That neither received the new guy’s hype means nothing; Kiel won’t be guaranteed anything based on his five-star status, and will need to work just as hard as any of Notre Dame’s other quarterback options to earn first-team snaps. But he’s no walk-on: Kiel was brought in to be the answer, and that he’s in for spring ball only furthers the idea that he could step in immediately as Notre Dame’s starter.

What would that mean for the Irish in 2012? Already prone to turnovers – as noted earlier today – the offense might ill afford to turn the keys over to raw, fresh-faced true freshman quarterback. This train of thought would eventually lead to the idea of Kelly’s status within the program: Can he afford to post another eight-win season in year three?

Once again, the schedule does Notre Dame no favors. There are only six true home games: Purdue, Michigan, Stanford, B.Y.U., Pittsburgh and Wake Forest. There are four road games: Michigan State, Oklahoma, Boston College and U.S.C. There are two neutral site dates: Navy in Dublin – hard not to look forward to this one – and Miami (Fla.) in Chicago’s Soldier Field.

It’s easier, but not by much. Last year’s schedule, when Notre Dame finished the regular season 8-4, included five true road games – the Irish won three of the five – with one game, the win over Maryland, played at a neutral site. So there’s the one fewer road game, for starters, but also the fact that a few teams on Notre Dame’s schedule are due to take a step back. Easier? Yeah, maybe.

Michigan State can’t win another 11 games, you’d think – though most thought the same after the Spartans won 11 games in 2010. The Hurricanes will be as young as any team in the A.C.C., which should make Al Golden’s second season as continuous work in progress. Stanford will take a significant step back, though not as far back as most might expect.

This brings us back to Kiel: Given how the schedule might ease a bit, should the Irish turn the offense over to the true freshman or stick with the more game-tested and experienced options? That would mean more of Rees, or perhaps a Hendrix or Golson, should either outplay the competition during the spring.

One thing Kelly should consider is continuity: picking Rees, for instance, and sticking with Rees. No more quick-trigger changes, such as when Rees and the since-departed Dayne Crist alternated during the early going, or when Rees and Hendrix split time in October and November. Swapping quarterbacks doesn’t merely prevent the offense from finding its footing; it also has every quarterback looking over his shoulder, waiting for the hook.

That’s not good for this offense. And sticking with his starter would be doubly vital should Kelly hand the offense over to Kiel, as damaging his confidence – via a seat on the bench after an interception – might damage Notre Dame’s long-term hopes at the position. That’s the Irish in a nutshell: winning today is key, but so is preparing the program for the future.

man I don't know about the schedule being easier...There are some teams that fell off some, Namely Michigan State and Stanford, but we added a monster game in Oklahoma, and So.Cal will be better because Barkley, and they are bowl elligible...Michigan will be better. Scratching my head here. The other stuff is reasonable conjecture at this point...pretty good read...

Oklahoma, Michigan and USC have 4th year QBs that will be all-everything. The majority of the other games will be tough. I'd say 8-4 is pretty optimistic unless we find an answer at QB.

And I think that answer is Golson.
