Sampson said there was no problem with his grades. Not doubting you TP, just saying I have heard different.
That doesn't mean he automatically clears ND Admissions. In recruitspeak "no problem with grades" means the recruit "probably" meets the NCAA minimum in the recruit's eyes. He tells the Rivals guy or local reporter, "I've got a GPA and Test Score that's fine with the NCAA". The Rivals guy or local reporter doesn't see the actual transcript or grade score or know if the test score is real if revealed OR if the kid has even taken the test yet (lots of them take it late and that becomes a problem). Every year there are bunch of recruits that tell the media "no problem" and they end up having problems.
I have no idea if this recruit does or doesn't have a problem. But then neither does the guy you referenced.
Justin Utupo was admitted by ND but the NCAA Clearinghouse now the Eligibility Center subsequently held him out of play while they investigated whether one of his core courses meet the actual content required. In the last 90's the younger Wisne brother, Andy, was admitted by ND but had to be held out while the Clearinghouse checked into a course. Eric Katenda was supposed to start summer school at ND but the Clearinghouse would except an English course he took, "Introduction to English" (He's from France) and he took a course or two at a local community college to fill the need.
ND can also (and more frequently) be the problem. Prestwood's transfer was contingent on him talking a foreign language course. I don't know if he didn't take a foreign language or enough credits or had a deficient grade. It was good enough for FSU by not ND.
David Terrell committed to ND as a recruit but ND Admissions told him to improve a test score. He balked and went to Michigan who didn't require a better test score. Terrell was the #8 pick as a NFL 1st Rounder. Carson Palmer had scholarship everywhere except ND. He made a fuss about before one of the ND/USC games stating that ND wanted him to do additional academic work in HS but he also refused. There are lots of other similar situations.
I don't know what TPO knows but just because a reporter, the recruit, or a HS coach says "no problem" doesn't mean there isn't. Particularly when dealing with ND Admissions.
Again, I don't know if there is or isn't a problem.
