Southwest, nice that you handled it via PM, but if you need back-up some day with some red-colored "incoming!" let me know. Some of the attack language used around here is boggling.

As far as, the Chris Brown situation is concerned [allegedly the topic of this thread], this young man seems like an outstanding player with great college potential, who will flourish in Kelly's air-offense. Concerning the concept that "a handshake means nothing", that doesn't find much traction with me. In my family a handshake is your honor bond, and the beginning of a seriously taken loyalty to the promise made. Apparently I am living in a very old world. If so, it was a better one.

Thank you OMM. Very well put above.

Oddly enough I saw no one saying a negative word about Chris taking visits. I say go for it young man you only get this oppurtunity once.
Most people, myself included, seem to take offense to another man (Chris' father) implying that a hand shake means nothing.
I suscribe to the Tony Montana theory that a man has only 2 things in this world.

Usually parents are in our favor. This is the first time I can remember one being against us.

Hmmm. This thing really stinks. It really sounds like the dad is dead set against us for some reason. I feel kind of bad for Chris being in this position. I really will be surprised if he's Irish in the end.

There have been other parents who have not been in Notre Dame's favor, usually they want their kid to stay closer to home. Marlon Pollard comes to mind.

It sounds to me like dad is trying to live out his football dream of playing at USC through his son. It's sad to see.

How close is Chris to his father, as in, are his parents divorced? Nothing seems to indicate that but it reminds me of the Kalis issue. If I remember correctly, something came up after Kyle Kalis committed to UM and his father (later to find it was his step-father) called Hoke a manipulator (or something similar) and for about a day some guess that he'd back out of his committment. Obviously in that situation, it didn't have much effect on Kalis because it was his step-father who I don't think he even lives with.

It's just strange that a father would come not want his kid to go to ND. Oh well, I'm sure he has his reasons.

He also may be feeling that community pressure as Stephon was last year. Bottom line is it all depends on their interest in Chris, and from the sound of it the fathers interest in the gamecocks is greater than their interest in his son. Another positive is that he would have to persuade his son away from us. Chris's interest may be genuine and his father could have no say. Unfortunately we know very little from Chris and to much from the father.

Even if SCar isn't interested, or Joe Brown fails to flip his son, this is still a bad situation for ND and for Chris.

I really do like the idea of this kid in the slot. I hope things work out for the best though.

Hopefully Chris will be as strong willed on going to notre dame as his dad is in strongarming him to usc. I know seantrel hendersons dad was shopping his son around and that didn't end up so well. Hopefully Chris's father will respect his son's wishes , and maybe with his injury Chris understands a great education in a not so good economy means more.

I'm not sure if that's in anyone's best interests. Signing Chris as a football player at ND when his dad is actively opposed to us is not a recipe for success.

When I read "Joe Brown" it makes me think of "Judge Joe Brown"

That said, I hope his dad doesn't ruin his son's chances. I'm sure he thinks Chris will be playing on Sundays in five years, but there is good chance he won't be, whether at USC or ND. Hopefully somebody can bring Mr. Brown to his senses about the value of an ND education and how important it is to go to a school like ND. Not that USC is a bad school, but I think you understand what I mean.

Average 30-year-ROI for a ND degree: $1,452,000 (10th nationally)
Average 30-year-ROI for a SCar degree: $339,900 (478th nationally)

The market value of an average ND degree is over four times that of an average degree from SCar.

Is it really that he is opposed to us, or is it more that he just wants his son closer to home or he is just very pro South Carolina?

Maybe ND can be a safe-haven for Chris to get away. That's assuming he wants to get away of course.

Why is his dad acting like this? Does he not want his son to get a good education? South Carolina doesnt even come close to Notre Dame when it comes to education. David Perkins said it best "its not a 4 year plan, its a 40 year plan"

I hope for Chris' sake that the kid isn't trying to escape from anything.

It might be if he is looking for an opportunity get away from mr control freak. There is nothing wrong with standing on your own two feet.

Since Mr. Brown did not accompany Chris on his visit to ND, I'm assuming he hasn't yet had the opportunity to speak with the coaches. Maybe a sit-down with Mr. Brown, his son and his ND recruiter will help dad see the light.
