Gray reps apparently don't affect your total reputation points either.

The handle for new posters appears gray until they hit a certain post number (25?), at which point it turns green. I think gray reps come from new users who haven't hit that number yet. The rep should turn green and count toward your reputation point total if and when they post enough for their handle to turn green.

I don't think it matters if their new or or not. I got a gray rep from someone who's been a member since '08. I believe it has more to do with number of posts.
