pardon my ignorance, but will he be able to practice with the team?

He was joking.

Yes, Prestwood will participate fully in all team activities. He just can't play.

Think of it as a mandatory red-shirt. Which is fine, because he would have red-shirted anyway.

I think he was seeing how well Aaron is doing at ND and told himself wow I may have missed the boat. Just a thought.

ESPN:
"This is a big pick-up for Notre Dame," analyst Tom Lemming told Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune. "Jordan has long arms and he moves his feet well. He was one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the country in the 2011 recruiting cycle, and sitting out a year will really benefit him, because he played tight end in high school. It's like Notre Dame got the elite offensive tackle they were looking for, for their 2012 recruiting class."

I think this worked out better for us in the long run than had he stuck with his original commitment to ND.
The "Forced Redshirt" allows him to really prepare for the next level without ever feeling slighted about not getting playing time as a Frosh.
An extra year of both physical and mental maturity, coupled with a year to learn the system/schemes and we could have a very dominant lineman here.

sitting out a year, that means he burns that year of eligibility, correct?

No, it's just like any other red-shirt. He won't play in 2011, so his eligibility won't start running until 2012.

The NCAA gives a recruit 5 years to use his 4 years of eligibility. The clock starts when you Enroll in a 2 year of 4 year college. Whether you play as a Freshman, go JUCO, transfer, redshirt, or watch the grass grow the clock is ticking. For those going on a mission, the clock freezes during the mission. A 6th year to play 4 may be granted for medical reasons if approved by the NCAA. 5 to play 4 so he's burning one of the 5 not one of the 4.

AMENDED.

BGIF, how long ago was it that they changed that rule? Not questioning-just curious...I seem to remember when I was playing that your clock didn't start until you played a sport for one year? That's why every once in awhile you were getting these old geezers and such that tried making a college team...or players who tried pro baseball first, then came back to college football. Or am I way off here?

Woah, easy there Mihalko! Tony Alford has been putting in work and landing top-flight prospects for the Irish long before Diaco has. I love Diaco, but Alford deserves all the credit in the world. Aaron Lynch anyone?

Nah; I was just kidding

I think you are right. I know there is a player at Johns Hopkins right now who is like a 26 year old senior. I know lots of hockey guys I was friends with at ND had been out of high school playing in juniors and there are tons of lacrosse kids that take a PG year and still have all of their eligibility when they report as freshman afterwards.

I always thought the clock started ticking after you enrolled in college; not when you left HS. But I could be wrong. Don't take anything I say as fact here.

Not sure if this is correct. Didn't Chris Weinke go and play pro baseball before coming back to play for Florida State when he was 26? He was a 28 year old rookie in the NFL. Is this a new rule?

Huge pick up! Thoughthe'd transfer eventually, just not to ND. ND will still persue elite OL prospects in this class. If anything, this gives them more cushion to just go after the elite.

IT has to be after you enroll in college. Brandon Weeden of OK state is the same as Weinke. He is like 26 right now after playing minor league baseball

Wait . . . Chick Norris actually fought people? Like, for real? I always thought that the whole "Chuck Norris" thing was just supposed to be humorous . . . like, "here's this small, unathletic-looking scrub, wouldn't it be funny if we made him beat people up in movies?!"

There is no way Chuck Norris has ever won a fight against a person that was trying. I would crush that guy.

HAH! He'd probably whoop you today. And he's old now.

There is no way. I just wish I could have fought him in his prime so he wouldn't have any excuses. Pardon my French, but Chick Norris is a b*tch.

Have you ever seen Way of the Dragon ? Chuck's a badass. He's a trained fighter, and he was the best around for awhile. I wouldn't want to mess with him.
