Statistically, if you're not good enough to start on your college football team, you're probably not good enough to play in the NFL. There are notable exceptions (see: Hurts), but if you're the weak link on your team when playing Stanford it's not going to go well when you're trying to play the Bears.

Yeah sure seems like it works out only a couple times per year throughout the entirety of FBS ball. And rarely does it lead to an NFL gig.

Outside of Gardner Minshew, who's the most recent 5th year transfer to be a starter at the NFL level? I don't know anything of the backups in the NFL though.

Probably have to go all the way back to Russell Wilson to find a true every-week QB1.

That's what I'm thinking. Though of course you can make a good living just being a backup, so perhaps we shouldn't discount that

And even that transfer didn't have the same motivation as most other transfers. Wilson didn't transfer because he couldn't start, he was a great QB at NC State. He transferred because he wanted to play big boy ball that people would watch in order to make a case for himself to NFL scouts.

I thought his coach gave him an ultimatum about focusing on football because Wilson was also a very good baseball player who was eventually drafted by MLB.

NC State also had Mike Glennon waiting in the wings so Russell wasn't exactly assured he would have an iron grip on the starting job.

It was this. And Wilson had already been drafted by an MLB team, and would miss the entirety of the summer before his 5th year. The NC State coach didn't want him to do that, so Russell transferred to Sconny.

Fun fact: the last play of his college career (and I believe Wisconsin's best team in the past 10 years) was a spike.

I didn't watch WSU close enough the last couple years... I know they've been good but when Gardner Minshew took over in Jacksonville I figured he had been there a few years.

IIRC that was a bit of an eyeroll excuse at the time. Either way though, it certainly wasn't "I've been passed up by a younger player, look like I'm very mediocre, but want to pursue my NFL dreams" transfer.

Did anyone see that he was at the game tonight? NDs twitter tweeted out a picture of him and a couple other past players.

Seems funny to me.

Eh, UCF was off this week, right? Good for him. Might have moved on to try and keep his career alive, but shows where his heart still is.

Big rivalry game. A lot of players back. He walked in with Nico and then hung with Alex Bars and D Kizer for a bit. Also saw Julian Love, James Onuwalu and Jarron Jones. I’m sure there were others.

Still has to be awkward for his UCF teammates for BW to go to another team's game and be on the sideline.

Watching the backup QB for Texas have a big day at RB made me think of BW. I know every player is different & I’m not saying BW was equipped to be a RB but I wonder if they even tried that route.

Jarron has to be super proud of his brothers play...

And considering how UCF coaches lied to him and then punted on the season to start a young player they can build with -- who is bad, and has cost them two games -- instead of either of the QBs who give them the best chance to win, I don't know why he'd have any loyalty there. In fact, I'm kind of surprised he hasn't just quit their team at this point and moved on.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but he would've been much better off just staying at ND and making a position switch given what has happened at UCF.

Would he have even been invited for a 5th year? ND was over the 85 scholarship limit by a few spots when he grad transferred.

FUCF, who gives a schitt how those teammates feel and definitely F Huepel who is losing more than 2 games this year.

2017 ND USC game QB play compared to tonight makes me wish for the playmaking of BW. I still think we win every game that Book started after BW was benched. We’re seeing the cheesy sink and dunk and limitations yet again of our underskilled Rudyesque QB.

I really like Brandon, don't get me wrong, but did you forget that he's innacurate on about 1/2 of his passing attempts?

The picture is from his first start game against Temple. I was there. He probably connected with ESB with that pass or got strip sacked.

"Brandon Wimbush, a former quarterback at Notre Dame and the University of Central Florida, was cofounder and chief athletic officer at MOGL, a marketplace that connects businesses with NCAA athletes for NIL marketing deals. He is now transitioning to an advisory role and shifting his focus to Duael Track, where he will serve as vice president of strategic partnerships for the forthcoming head-to-head competition, in which he has an equity stake."

I was at that game and got kicked out first quarter when the usher saw my flask in my back pocket
Reminds me of a fun story of sneaking booze into ND stadium. ND/USC either 2015 or 2017. I was tailgating with the family all day. Was about to head into the stadium for the game and was going to rip a double shot of bourbon real quick before heading in. Checked the back of the truck and the bourbon is gone. Asked the family and no one knows where it is. Oh well, shotgun a beer instead and head into the stadium. About halfway through the first quarter, my cousin comes back from the concession stand with two of the big cokes. He hands it to me. I'm like "No dude. I'm not thirsty." He says "Just shut up and have a sip." I taste it and lo and behold, it was about half bourbon and half coke. The good brother had snuck the plastic fifth of Jim Beam into the game and had mixed a drink for me. Best non game related surprise I've ever gotten at Notre Dame. Thanks cousin Corey!!
