If you don’t, he’s gone.
If he goes, who replaces him?

I hate entertaining this or even thinking about it, but my realistic (read: awful) choice without any research or thought process would probably be:

Kenny Dillingham

There are viable replacements I could see pursuing if he were to leave, but with Saban and Urban gone and done, Fickell and Rhule disappointing, Elko and DeBoer being kind of mid, I'd be hard pressed to think of a coach who would clearly be an upgrade from Freeman at this point. Maybe Dan Lanning?

Dan Lanning?

Lanning seems pretty good but good luck prying him away from that mountain of Nike money they have for him + assistant coaches + NIL. Not sure he’d have any reason to leave at this point.

Hopefully this is all moot anyways and we won’t actually need to worry about it. I saw OSU’s AD just gave Day the dreaded “vote of confidence” though. We’ll see.

Is it possible it's already done (and has been), but they're delaying an announcement until after the season for some reason?
NIU happened... read a tweet they were going to announce something and then that game happened

That's right, I remember that being reported at the time as well. Figured since the course had been corrected since then maybe they worked something out in the background instead of publicly. Possibly waiting until after the conference championship games to announce it? Man, wouldn't it be such a kick in the balls if Notre Dame brass pulled the contract back only for us to have this amazing season and ultimately losing MF because we didn't sign him back in September?

Genuinely can't think of a single coach that would be a definite upgrade and as good of a culture fit, that is even a remote possibility.

If post-NIU Freeman is the coach we're getting from now on ... there's not many that I think are definitely better, period. Kirby obviously. Maybe Lanning, Sark, Deboer...Huepel?

If Freeman were to leave, it would suck a lot after all the growth he's shown the past three years

If Freeman leaves you put a 7 year 20 mil per contract on the desk of either Kalen DeBoer or Sark.

That's double the Kelly deal per year. I mean...both are probably better coaches, but time will tell and that still feels a bit expensive.

I hope your intervention goes well.
😜
I'm aware we're not going to hire Dan Lanning.
I was just thinking through who among current college coaches would be a clear upgrade from Freeman and he, and maybe Sarkisian, was basically the only name I came up with. It's not like the old days when you could see a half-dozen guys one might rather have than BK.

I think there are other "upgrades" in terms of the guys who have won and been around, but obviously when it comes to viable names to replace him, I have a hard time coming up with any off the top of my head at the moment.

I don't think he's going anywhere, but stranger things have happened.

I went over to Eleven Warriors after tosu lost to meatchicken cause I figured they would be calling for Freeman. A lot of their posters were calling for Mike Vrabel.
It isn't going to happen. Honestly I'm not even sure there is enough money to ever get him to college football in this era. Vrabel is too old school and he's going to have NFL offers in short order.

It would be a surprise if he took any college job. I get why they want him but they probably have a better chance of pursuing Freeman.

Pretty sure Vrabel said on Pardon My Take that he had no interest in going to OSU (this was a couple of months if not over a year ago) because he wanted no part in modern day recruiting.

Two years ago the list in my (or Swarbrick's) desk would've included names like Rhule, Fickell and Elko. Now I'm not sure it does. Kyle Whittingham too but he feels done.

Smart, Lanning, Sarkisian are probably the three best coaches in the sport right now but have no reason to leave where they're at. I would call DeBoer and see if he's really happy at Bama. Kiffin is probably worth a look but not sure on fit. Heupel? Rhett Lashlee? Wait for it... Clark Lea?

Few of the ACC coaches are very exciting. There are possibilities in the Big 12 but are any of them an upgrade?

Point is, it's a very short list right now. Certainly let's hope they don't need to pull it out.

Vrabel will most likely have his pick of NFL jobs this offseason. There's no chance he goes back to the college game.

I might be completely naive and was talking about this over the weekend, but I'm not convinced that Freeman would leave ND for OSU. He seems to genuinely love it here, and if he thinks the pressures of the ND job are too much, how's it going to look heading to Columbus with a 4 game losing streak to the skunkbears immediately on his shoulders? That aside, he just seems to enjoy the ND RKG players and as long as they pay him, he's got a great thing going here after a bumpy start. Great coordinators. He took a solid product from BK and made it his own quickly and polished it.

His job isn't finished here. I truly believe that.
