He should transfer to Navy.

Best of luck to him…but honestly I like how this sets up. Allows us to take another grad transfer mercenary after this year to bridge the gap to Carr/Minchey.

I hope he returns, but that thought crossed my mind as well. Time to fire up the 2024 transfer QB thread!

It's too bad it didn't work out, but this is how it goes in 2023. Guys that are close but not quite #1 are gonna leave. The part that sucks is the impact on roster depth. ND isn't the only program experiencing this, tho.

Good luck dude.

This is disappointing. I pray that Sam stays healthy. Otherwise it has the potential of being a long season. Best of luck to Tyler!!

He has three years of eligibility left. He can be the guy at ND for two years, no problem. I sensed a bit of exhaustion from Tyler during the Blue-Gold game. He was supposed to be the guy last season, but then was hurt. He was supposed to be the guy this season, then was in tough competition with a top transfer. Maybe he feels its just not in the cards for him at ND.

Not sure how many QB openings there are across the country for a inexperienced, but talented QB... I feel like most schools solved their QB rooms during the winter transfer window.

Problem is it was gonna happen sooner or later, you really think Carr is gonna sit longer than 1 year at ND? or Minchey? You either bring in a top QB next year for 1 year or most likely start Carr. Angeli isn't a bad backup option he just needs experience.

Wasn't he an early enrollee? If so, couldn't he graduate by December? I would like him back and wish him well in his journey's but this seems awfully shortsighted on his part. Could he follow Rees to Bama? That seems to be one major spot that they don't appear set at QB.

lmao, pathetic. the staff did everything they could to hand him in the job, starting him in 2022 every chance they could. Then the second things seem to be competitive, with the job not guaranteed, he bails. I was always confident he wasn't the guy, but this is just so damning.

EDIT: also, I take back every mean thing I said about Ian Book a million times over.

It's better for him to leave now than in a couple months. We need Angeli and Minchey to get all the snaps they can if we have to move on without Buchner. I really want him on the roster but he's made his decision and ND needs to make sure there are no lingering issues whatever happens with Buchner.

Where I could see him excelling is in a system that has a lot of QB runs built in and single read concepts. He's wildly talented but he just needs another year of seasoning and that seasoning should not be done on Saturdays.

Argh this is so dumb, for him.

Yes, clearly Hartman is the better QB right now but Buchner has tons of time left on the clock. He should stick, and learn, and win the job for 24 (or leave then if he can’t). Also what P5 program is going to hand him a starting job when he wasn’t there for spring ball? He’s talented but still incredibly raw.

Hopefully he has a few conversations and realizes that and decides to stick. It is rare for a transfer announcement to openly raise that as a possibility, so hopefully that is a serious option.

Short sighted move if he leaves and isn’t promised a starting job at a Tier 1 school. He has a ton of eligibility left and there isn’t a great reason not to just wait his turn.
Unless he doesn't think he's good enough to win the job in 24. He's got some major pass game issues, even more so than wimbush ever did.

Agreed……but if he doesn’t come back, I think Angeli will be set up as a very viable back up option. He took a lot of practice reps last year after Buchner was hurt and he’ll have all summer to build up additional chemistry with the receivers. I think he is also a better plug and play fit for Hartman in that the game plan will be more similar than to what Buchner’s game plan would be. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to see Tyler return, but I don’t feel like the offense would be hamstrung like it was with Pyne last year in the event Angeli has to come in.

My main issue with this is how important the spring practice could have been for minchey/angeli and they used A LOT of reps on Buchner when everyone with an unbiased opinion knew it was going to be hartman. I'm not saying that buchner shouldn't have gotten the reps, they just are wasted if he leaves.

He probably realized the “quarterback competition” was actually between him, Angeli, and Minchey for #2 on the depth chart. And it’s an even race right now.
