I don't see any world in which Buchner threatens Hartman for the gig in the fall. I mean it would be hard for any college QB to beat him out in the fall outside of like Stroud or Kelly and a few others. He has been playing for 5 years, is very accurate, athletic enough, and very good at making quick and correct reads from all his years running the RPO concepts.

I mean, there is a world. Its an uphill battle though

Buchner went from a raw gunslinger to a perpetually hurt player that has truncated his throwing motion into inaccurate, clunky nonsense.

He rolls his ankles constantly, there is probably a stability issue there. The more catastrophic injuries we have no idea if they’re a pattern or one-offs.

But he needs more reps (mental and physical) and a more natural throwing motion. He’s not a guy right now that can “make all of the throws” and he needs to be much more accurate to be a full time starter. I’m hoping we see some of that this week but if he’s inefficient then please for the love of God give Angeli some live reps.
I’ve never seen a high school QB performance that made me go “Oh … oh no” like Tyler’s day at the Elite 11 in Nashville. His QB coach should be sued for whatever he did to Tyler.

Please don't blindly throw to a spot into the waiting arms of a defender.

I continue to believe this is being under appreciated by some. He completely fucked his throwing motion and has not been able to consistently deliver the ball since. A few wow plays are covering up the greater problem which is the repeatability of the simple and mundane.

Now, I still believe that can be repped out of him. Though, I do think the trend, to start the season, favored this is more likely permanent than something to be easily fixed.

But, he’s talented enough that I can’t wait to see him play on Friday. Probably most excited for him to have this chance than any other player on the team.

I hope Rees doesn't get too cute with the RPOs, obviously use them if the opportunity presents itself but I'd rather see them run more designed QB runs and turn Buchner loose in the read-option game and set up the PA pass. Don't overcomplicate things on Friday against a team you SHOULD be able to run against early and often if we even have a semblance of a passing threat established.

true that. The off season throwing video of him a full year younger where the ball was exploding out of his hand with consistency and a much more compact, high release, no drag throwing motion in comparison to what he showcased in Nashville and has since become is actually sad. It likely permanently changed the trajectory and ceiling of his football career. He went from a super athletic QB with high end arm talent to well, not that.

I completely agree. His current throwing motion is not what was initially recruited. He does not have the accuracy to be a championship level quarterback. I would love to be proven wrong. Assuming we get Hartman, I think Minchey overtakes him in ‘24 due to his accuracy

I hope he isn't just pumping him up publicly because they're bringing in a transfer.

I don't have enough of a feel for Marcus to be sure what's just coach speak yet.

i think these were the words they used to describe buchner back in august camp. untill buchner proves it on the field im not going to believe any of the hype.
I might be wrong but I don't recall Marcus or Tommy saying those kinds of things back in August. It felt to me like there was tempering expectations.

Though the context is much different now. ND's offseason was spent getting ready for OSU (with an intentionally limited passing game plan) and now ND has effectively communicated to Buchner that he's going to sit next year.

My concern is the coaching staff is too concerned about possibly losing that they again do a conservative game plan and don't plan to win.

I am sick of this only run, TE focused passing attack. We have 4 new incoming WR, a gem of Freshman WR under utilized and we have Buchner that hasn't proven himself...everyone needs to see some passing and mid to long targeting.

I would think with Buchner’s stronger arm we’d take more deep shots, and he won’t have Mayer to lean on with eight yard outs to the tight end. But the strength of this offense is running the ball - and those four WRs aren’t here yet - so, not sure why we’d change things up too dramatically?

Yea, they didn't take a transfer QB because of Buch and Pyne. Then, Freeman said post OSU that "we got ourselves a QB" and Buchner proceeded to fall apart against Marshall." We're 8-4 largely because they misjudged the QB room. But, I don't think it's unicorns and rainbows to believe a once highly touted QB recruit, who's shown flashes, can put it together. I'm just in the show me phase of this process. And, looking forward too it.

God Bless Coach Freeman, but that's classic Coach-speak. Doesn't mean that good things might not happen, but the boss can't know that when his guy is still in a red shirt. (Coach laughed at a reporter who asked him if Buchner would take any practice hits.) Coach Kelly said similar Coach-speak all the time by the way --- what the heck else should they be saying?

Play the game. We'll see with our own eyes. We will not "see" until it happens.

Well then it’s a good thing that we will barely have any TEs to focus on in this bowl game!

He has potential, and I hope he doesn't transfer looking for playing time. The bottom line is that he needs to grow a lot as a pocket passer. He makes too many mistakes but it's clear he can be a guy that wins a lot of games if he gets more comfortable operating from the pocket and doing the little things more consistently.

I would feel good about him competing for the job as a senior but if you can get Hartman for next year you do it and don't think twice. Throwing three picks and two pick sixes is just continuation of a pattern where he can't protect the football. The last one on first and goal where he saw one guy jump the slant --> double clutched the ball --> then decided "fuck it let me throw this anyway" was one of the most insane decisions I've seen someone make knowing the time, score, down and distance. He's got to become a more consistent and precise player.

Yeah, I was immediately impressed he looked off the first attempt but was completely surprised he let it rip.
I honestly put that blame on Rees for calling the play in the first place but whatever, he’s growing too. TB played well and was a difference maker.
That 2nd INT was just a missed pass off of a fluke offensive deflection. I actually liked that he made the attempt to get the 1st.

Agree with all of this. I also feel just so much better about Buchner now than I did before the game. He flashed much more today than I expected, and had much better pocket awareness than expected. I think he could be really great eventually. He’s in a weird and tough spot of needing the game reps, but we really can’t afford to roll with him next year unfortunately. Really hope he’s willing to sit behind Hartman for a year because I think he could be special one day.

Really low floor and really high ceiling. I appreciate his potential, but I really hope Hartman, Minchey, Carr are so good, that he never plays another snap for ND. 🤷‍♂️

I’m basically here. He badly needs reps, but ND can’t afford to give them to him again next season. If he’s willing to learn behind Hartman, they might have something.

My hope is that they convince Buchner to stick around and play the Taysom Hill role again, and then be in the driver's seat for the starting job in 2024 (unless Minchey/Carr/Angeli beats him out then which is also perfectly fine!)

Lax once again you've said everything that I wanted to say. Also, Buchner would have 2 years of eligibility if he sticks around and competes for the job in 2024.

The moment never looked to big for him. That end zone pick was just bad. I don’t agree with the call from Rees. They were running the ball right down their throat no need to call that. But the QB has to make good decisions.

TB took some damn hits tonight and keep getting up. The dude is tough.
