Height is not the issue that coaching looks at. The issue is Arm Length mainly. (which is only roughly correlated with height) This is true in (almost) all athletics --- QB eye-height being the big exception. You measure an athlete's "effective height" to his shoulder and then out to his fingertips. I once heard Al McGuire describe an Indiana center (listed as 7 feet) as really a 6'7" player because he had an unusually long neck and head, but short arms. His play-by-play partner, who was apparently a moron, hadn't a clue and said: "What are you talking about? Seven foot is seven foot, isn't it?"

The NFL wants arms over 33", hands over 10". Quickness, Knee Bend, Explosion, Hands, Anchor.

He's huge and he's grading well because it's probably impossible to move him and get around him.

joe alt has been awsome but i have to admit that i thought he could be this good i just didnt think he'd see the field until his junior year.

where does he rank with say McGlinchey at the same stage in their careers?

Alt is better than Mount McGlinchey at this same stage. MM however really ramped it up for JR/SR years. You could see the change in his build and his face. IEers noted that he looked like a giant Navy SEAL. "First man off the bus." We may forget that opposing coaches feared him as much as Q his senior year.

When we played LSU in a bowl game, Orgeron said, when asked about Notre Dame: I can't get past watching their offensive line. That left tackle and left guard. I get stuck watching them play after play. We have to stop the run as our priority. Coach Kelly, sitting next to him being interviewed, immediately chimed in "Yes. stop the run, same with us ... end of interview." (he was kidding with the interviewer, and refering to Leonard Fournette who was the RB then.)

i think the better comparison at this stage would joe alt or ronnie stanley. MM started coming on toward the end of his junior year with the start in the music city bowl vs lsu. but man that '17 OL was awsome.

Crazy that he was projected as a 3 star and he's just a Sophomore. Scouts don't know shit sometimes. He's still the highest graded OL in the country.

Yeah he could be. If he’s already this advanced as a 19 year old, and continues his impressive play into next season, it’s conceivable to believe he could be that type of draft prospect. Incredible size, great athleticism, elite technique… hard to see any player passing on a top five selection to return for another year. The trenches are a brutal position. All it takes is some LB or DL to land on the back on his legs, and suffer a significant injury. Look what happened to Ronnie Stanley at the beginning of last season. It has taken him over a year to rehab and be ready to perform at a high level again.

Love going back and seeing early recruiting takes. This is why I quit getting super invested in recruiting, you never know what will happen once they step on campus.

ND can't recruit like Bama and Georgia does at positions such as WR, DB, and RB. But they can and have to recruit elite dudes on the Oline to stay competitive.
