Nice pick up for the Irish!

Land Spindler and we'll have a solid OL for this class.

I think he shows some real promise as a run blocker at TE, that should translate to OT. Like Jamie explains, not much pass blocking film to evaluate but his movements skills should translate.

McGlinchey was listed at 6'8 275 at 247 and I believe und.com had him at 280 at NSD. So, it's not like a kid that is 6'7 260, as a HS Junior, is that far off that number. It's really about what this kid looks like when he's 21-23.

This. He's not a project, but more of a developmental player. He should be ready to contribute when he's a junior.

It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility for him to add plenty of weight. My HS LT was 6-7 265 our senior year, by the time he got done with his RS freshman year at Purdue.....he was pushing 340 and about 7% body fat. His upper body ballooned and it was all pure muscle

So was Tate Nichols.

Don't really know what Nichols could've been, given his knee gave up on him and ended his career. I had to look up Nichols' 247 profile and boy, does that picture fully encapsulate his time at ND. Nothing but injury after injury.

Sorry fellas. Gonna be hard for me to get excited about guys like Joe Alt and Pat Coogan. Good kids, will fit well at ND, but they are projects.

ND can't recruit like Bama and Georgia does at positions such as WR, DB, and RB. But they can and have to recruit elite dudes on the Oline to stay competitive.

Right, but he was one of those "profile" type recruits. Simply put, his body couldn't handle it. I am sure if you went and looked at all of the guys signing LOI's to places similar to (insert MAC school here) you will find stories just like Tate. The point is, there are certainly stories out there like Nick Martin, Joe Staley, etc. The problem is, the "hit rate" on something like that is significantly different than hit rates on top tier talent.

If Spindler hops on board, it can give the OL class a decent grade, call it a B+. But if they whiff on him....

Not every kid is going to be elite or a multi year starter. The 3 star/borderline 4 star recruits are what make up a team’s foundation. Coogan deserves a lot more respect on these boards, as his offer list is very impressive. If they get Spindler, then that makes up a good o-line class.

I mean, ND had guys like Matt Hegarty, Christian Lombard and Hunter Bivin, who were top tier talent and didn't pan out.

I'm also pretty sure McGlinchey was the lowest ranked OL in that stacked 2013 class with guys like Elmer, Bivin and McGovern and he turned out to be the best talent of the group by a wide margin.

I wouldn't say his body not being able to handle it had to do with his frame. Sometimes, guys get hurt and can't stay healthy. Shaun Crawford wasn't a profile recruit, but he sure as hell has had problems with injuries. I'm just saying Nichols' issue wasn't an inability to translate his talent to the OL, but his injuries.

I will see if I find the article, but there was NFL draft looking at history of recruiting rankings and draft picks. IIRC, there was something like a 4 to 5 fold increase in likelihood of highly ranked OL getting drafted versus 3*'s. The overall rate of the highly recruited guys making it was still close to 50/50, again, IIRC.

I could be messing up the numbers slightly, but I don't believe they are significantly off. I will see what I can find, but the %'s are not great.

.9749 4* Rocco Spindler
.9746 4* Blake Fisher
.9644 4* Garrett Dellinger
.9640 4* Wyatt Milum

.9089 4* Greg Crippen
.8904 4* Caleb Johnson
.8701 3* Pat Coogan

.8628 3* Tristan Bounds

The bottom line is this is who ND got on campus and offered during this cycle. They’re coming out with one top guy and two of the bottom 3 ranked guys they’ve offered. That’s just not good enough. Coronavirus can be blamed. Having a stacked roster can be blamed but the bottom line is without Spindler right now the class is subpar. Especially considering how many guys were already on campus in this group and how many had really serious interest in ND. That’s not to say I don’t like Alt or Coogan but they’re less exciting than Tengwall, Rucci, Milum, and maybe Dellinger who were all planning on being on campus in March.

He has the athleticism to develop into a good tackle. A project to me is one where they need to develop their athleticism, body, technique, etc.

Yeah, they need to develop Alt's body and technique. He's 260 and has extremely minimal pass blocking experience.

5 OL can play at a time, and rotation doesn't usually exist. In just two classes you could have an OL of:

Baker - Spindler - Coogan - Fisher - Carmody

With Alt being a potential star as well if things go to plan.

Plus Carroll, Correll and Kristofic have 4 years of eligibility remaining (early reports on Olmstead have been a bit disappointing thus far). Yeah it was disappointing to miss on Tengwall etc but we still have fantastic depth in talent on the OL.

ND isn't going to be loaded with 5 stars, but ND can't afford to stack up 3 star O line guys like Clemson can and get away with it. Covid can be blamed to a degree this year. But a 2 year haul of Carmody, Baker, Fisher, Coogan, Alt and maybe Spindler isn't gonna cut it.

I hear you on what you are saying. And I somewhat agree with you on Alt.

But I have to disagree with you completely on Coogan. He is severely underrated by the sites. It’s criminal. The kid could basically choose any school in the country he wanted. LSU, Michigan, OSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, TAMU, Stamford to name a few. You don’t get an offer and be recruited hard by LSU if you are from Illinois unless you can play!

If there were camps this spring and summer and Coogan was able to participate I have no doubt he would be a 4 star by now. He could have a rise similar to Kyle Hamilton, not to Hamilton’s extent but a similar rise.

Don’t base everything on recruiting sites rankings, take a look at the offer list and who is actively recruiting these kids. I’ll say it once again the recruiting sites have criminally underrated Coogan.

Yea absolutely. The depth at ND right now is outstanding. There’s 12 4-5*’s and 3 3*’s on the roster right now which is about as good as you can get in the country in terms of talent. Obviously it is close to impossible to have 15 4-5* recruits on your roster at a time but it is still important to have a bunch in ND’s case because it allows for misses. I don’t have an issue with Alt and Coogan being on the squad but it does put pressure on the 2022 class to be more loaded with higher end recruits. If you have 3-4 classes of a mixed bag of 3 and 4*’s then it can quickly become 8 4-5*’s and 7 3*’s which isn’t a top end talent OLine anymore. I highly doubt that happens to ND as they recruit the OLine incredibly well but this class had high expectations and didn’t quite meet them. Every year fans and probably the staff will expect to load up on talented dudes along the OLine so it isn’t crazy to be disappointed in the potential haul for this cycle. BUT, the sky isn’t falling. Quinn already has ND in it for a bunch of crazy talented dudes in 2022 and I hope he can get the talented dudes people are hoping for. I liken ND’s OLine recruiting (15 dudes similar to 13) as some elite-level basketball teams. Can UNC get away with taking a developmental 3* a few times? Absolutely. But if it becomes a trend then the fan base goes crazy thinking things are going poorly. The expectations for ND OLine recruiting are sky high.

They need 3 guys to pop every two years to keept he OL humming. Baker/Fisher could be a leftside for the ages. Carmody is a freak compared to 99% of 6-5+ HS OT's. There are guys like Coogan that flooded the NFL from the likes of Wis/MSU/IU/PSU/IA over the past decade.

Now, I'd prefer to take 8 every two years and have some defections than taking 6 but you have 4 bodies in 2019, two of which I'm personally counting on plus you only need to have 3 new bodies ready for '21 with Lugg & Paterson back... 2 if Banks stays.

ND is fine with what they have.

Yep. LSU isn't going into IL to recruit an OL very often.

And, I'd add that I think there is this notion we've been recruiting a bunch of 5 star OL and that has been the reason for the NFL draft success. The truth is, that none of OL we've recruited and sent to the NFL this entire time were composite 5 stars. Big Q, nope. Stanley, nope. McGlinchey, nope. N. Martin, nope. Z. Mart, nope. And, only 1, Big Q, was a composite top 100 player.

- In the last 2 classes (20' and 21') we'll have signed (without Spindler) 2 top 100 OL, 3 top 150 OL, and a 4th that has a national offer list.

- We'll have recruited 1 guy rated and ranked higher than Nelson (61st nationally, rating of .9707). (Fisher, 51st and .9746)

- 2 guys rated and ranked higher than Stanley (125th and .9472). (Fisher and Baker 99th and .9552)

- 3 guys that were rated and ranked higher than McGlinchey (#172 and .9280). (Fisher, Baker, and Carmody 145th and .9355)

Then, if you include the class before that, you add 2 more guys, Correll (95th and .9578) and Carroll (118th and .9472), to the list ahead of Stanley to make it 4 over 3 cycles. And, 5 guys ahead of McGlinchey over 3. A possible very close 6th with Kristofic (183rd and .9254).

So, that is 6 prospects that are about as good or better than Big Mike over the last 3 cycles. That is, per the composite ranking geniuses.

Man, that just sucks.

I am more worried about rush DE than I am OL right now. And CB. And RB.

If we know that ND is only going to get so much high end talent every year, I would like to see it spread amongst different positions. CB and DE are extremely important, as is OT, but we also need a home-run talent at RB every 3 years, along with the odd stud at WR, LB, and safety.

DE seems pretty good for a while with Foskey, Botelho and friends. They seem to have all sorts of talent those two.
We totally need a gun RB every other year.
