When I was a kid (32 yrs old for reference) the best part about playing multiple sports was that there always was a break between them. Baseball started in April, and ended sometime in June, MAYBE, July if there was a good run in LL or something. Pee wee/midget football didn't start until middle/end of August and ended in October. Basketball started around Thanksgiving or later, and ended in February. There were always times to recharge.

What I see now is that the end and beginning of the seasons all blend together anymore, and that's almost as big of an issue as playing on sport year round. Like @ACamp1900 is saying, there's no time to stop and enjoy being a kid.

I'm reading this and realized that travel teams and specializing has been going on for about 25 years now. All four of my boys and daughter played multiple sports when they were young. Several of them were asked to play on travel teams. A couple did, but they still played other sports up through middle school. The problem with travel ball today is that many of these coaches will drop kids in favor of one that might be a little better. I also saw a lot of talented kids that never played in HS because they either got burned out, got into drugs/drinking, got lazy, discovered girls or just didn't care. On the other hand, there are plenty of kids that don't shine at an early age, but end up as good as any as they got older. I also wouldn't worry about "playing up" until they were 11 or 12.

I knew the head wrestling coach at our HS. He had a boy a year younger than my oldest son. His son would come to all of the youth wrestling practices, but his dad never let him wrestle in the tournaments. Kid ended up state runner up in HS.

The moral of the story.....Have them play multiple sports at least through middle school and if the miss a game or two it's not going to stunt their development.

People who take the aluminum foil / parchment paper roll out of the box while using it. There is a reason for the serrated edge and 9 times out of 10, they unroll too much, leaving a bulky mess to put back into the box. WTF is wrong with those people?

It's not just her though. Little kitchen at work it happens at least twice a month...I go to use the foil wrap and it's a clumpy mess. Only one way that happens as far as I can tell. I also saw it at a little cafe. The worker was heating up a pastry and grabbed the parchment paper roll and removed it from the box. Predictably, it got jostled around and had to be rolled back up and put in the box. I just don't get it. It's not faster, it's not reducing waste. Why do people do it?

This supply stuff is getting beyond dumb. My mom ordered a bedroom set back in feb,… it’s still not in and tracking shows it’s been sitting in Long Beach harbor for months. Wtf!?! I don’t want to hear about Covid with the border being basically wide open.

Also my birthday is coming up and my wife and mom want to go halves on a new baseball glove for me. One of high quality that will hopefully last a decade or more. I was hoping for a Shoeless Joe. We go shopping at every sporting goods store in town. No right handed gloves anywhere. We ask why,… ‘they’re all stuck in shipping containers,…’ is the response two separate store managers gave us today. I gave up and ordered a glove on Amazon so we will see if it ever gets here…

I work in the automotive industry… I can’t get parts to my body shop to save my life. And it’s the same answer in terms of everything on boats waiting to get in. Parts we could get in two days pre-Covid are now a month out, because they’re sitting on the boat, waiting to go through inspection, then get flown across country to the warehouse, THEN get to my shop on a normal 2-day delivery route.

If you schedule a repair appointment now, wait a month until all the parts are on hand, and then by some miracle we don’t need extra parts after dropoff and disassembly, you’re good… but zero repairs go that way except the simplest stuff, so almost every job goes out back to sit and wait for additional parts.

Customers rarely have understanding, and insurance companies are merciless in terms of rental coverage. They don’t pay for more than their 30 days, knowing some poor soul is going to get crushed by rental charges if we need extra parts. It’s all bullshit.

Unfortunately, this is classic operations management 101 that every business student in college has taken over the last few decades. Freight is showing the first signs of this, which not to be political, but foretells a gigantic flashing warning signs for Democrats come November as the impact moves into the broader environment.

TLDR, this sums it up perfectly from the MIT article....
Governments around the world responded by propping up their economies with lavish stimulus payments, unemployment benefits, paycheck protection schemes, and eviction moratoriums, while central banks worked to induce liquidity by keeping interest rates very low, among other means. While government actions certainly helped many struggling families stay afloat, many other households enjoyed a double bonus of lowered household spending plus higher income thanks to the government’s largesse. As a result, the personal savings rate quadrupled in the United States, and consumers worldwide socked away some $5.4 trillion in excess savings. That surplus of money built the foundation for the subsequent rebound, product shortages, supply chain congestion, and inflationary surge. It also likely planted the seeds for the next economic downturn.

Throw in the lack of workers (or people not wanting to work) and we‘re sitting in quite a mess. Seems like an odd time for trying to unionize Amazon, Starbucks, etc.

Evey time I hear some nitwit talk about being her fur baby's mom I want to ask, "So you screwed a dog? Really? You didn't have a litter of puppies, so stop with this mom crap."

On an unrelated note, I'm afraid I might get a wool jacket for Father's Day from some of my offspring that they made themselves.

I mean I know its hard to understand but to many people pets are family members.... Especially for those who adopt. Just saying.

And as to the people who drive around with pets unrestrained, if you have an even a minor accident at relatively moderate speeds, you are pretty much ensuring they sustain injuries and or die.

Men who wear lululemon, especially the leggings. Every time I see it, I think of this....

Guys wear those leggings in my softball league. A beer-league, slow-pitch softball league.

I always wondered what the point of wearing shorts is if you're going to go ahead and wear leggings underneath anyways, in 80+ degree weather. Am I missing something?

If it's performance enhancing in some way, maybe it's more applicable to basketball, but a slow-pitch softball league?

It's generally for knee support. At 38, I already have to wear one during heavy squats. Lotta middle-aged guys need them for any activity that requires running. I assume they opt for leggings over knee sleeves because it's either more comfortable or looks better.

Sleeves. Otherwise they're trying to be cool.

On a side note, unless you're competing I highly recommend getting away from heavy squats and go to more reps with a lighter load. You're hips and knees will thank you later in life. ;)

Not at all, but my last real gear grinded post was about not being able to get a glove in any store in town.... I used the glove during my daughter's softball game last night (I'm the coach pitcher) and yeah, gears most definitely NOT grinded on this glove. It's badass. I highly recommend Shoeless Joe gloves to all the I.E. softball or baseballers.....

I think I largely disagree with this. I don't think you're talking about powerlifting levels of weight, right? What's heavy?

No, not powerlifting levels. I worked out regularly for quite a while. When I was 50, I was 5'8", 180lb doing 365lb squats. I'll be 70 in September and my knees and hips remind me almost daily. I think would have been better off doing more leg presses and less squats.

Hmmm. I'm conflicted on this. I think if you take care of your body and not just "throw weight" around, you can lift into older age. But I have yet to live it. I've had hip impingements here and there but I don't plan on stopping squatting. I'm not trying to get to 500+ because I have no need. Curious how often you squatted, form, and other programming choices.

There are so many variations, one doesn't need to squat heavy often. Goblet, Overhead, front, zercher and then break out from the squat camp and do lunge variations, sleds, kneesovertoes guy's stuff. I'm hopeful we can keep young(ish) legs/hips into older age and still exercise to keep healthy levels of muscle mass.

Time will tell and appreciate your input.

Servers asking if I need change when I pay for my meal at the table irritates me. Bring me my change and I'll leave you a tip. Don't ask me if it's all yours to keep. I usually pay with a card, but occasionally pay with cash. Today my lunch was just over $21 and I gave my server two $20's. She asked if I needed change. Yeah, I'm leaving you almost $19 on a $21 check. Don't ask me if I need change. It's essentially asking for a bigger tip. You earn that with your service, not by asking for it. It's like asking for more expensive gifts. That's my gripe for the day.
