I don't buy into the argument that the bowls have been devalued by the playoff system. The Rose, Sugar, etc are part of the playoff itself so there's still plenty of clout there. The RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl is also just as prestigious as it ever was (It wasn't). If anything by expanding the playoff it will raise the standing of the other big bowls. Instead of rotating them each year who hosts the playoff games you could have the Fiesta be a playoff game yearly as well as the Sugar, Rose, Peach, Orange, etc. All the old big bowls WOULD be big bowls and mean something each year because they would all determine a possible playoff champion.

That's why I say expand it to 8 or even 16. More chances for chaos, and chaos means less predictability. Will the same 3 or 4 teams keep making it to the big game? Probably, but at least there's chances for them to slip up if they have to play more games. Plus there will be clearer selections and it'll give the Cindarellas a chance to play at least.

If a school can pay players what does that do to academic requirements relative to ND vs other schools? Are kids gonna come to ND to get paid but also have to bust ass in skool? Would ND pay more to get less suitable kids?

I've got it....all 130 schools, each gets 25 picks from available high school players, 3250 picks total across a 65 round draft. Draft position is based on previous year's performance and picks can be traded.

It's the only fair move!

Except for the kids that wind up at Florida International or Oklahoma.

Don’t think limiting schools to “x” amount of stars would work. That would open doors to potential manipulation of the recruiting services. Instead of potentially limiting players, why not limit programs in other ways. Set a limit on the number of support staff - analysts, recruiting support personnel, etc. Why does a program need 12-15 analysts and a support staff for recruiting of 8-12 people? Set a limit on recruiting budgets to a set amount. Maybe cut on field coaches from 10 to 8. I would much rather try to find ways to even out program spending than limiting players opportunities. More extreme but unlikely is to limit coaching salaries somehow. All of these things doesn’t mean there will ultimately be more parity but it would put programs on a bit more of a level field for $$ spent. Then it’s up to each individual school to determine what they want to do to compete.

I like T Town Tommy's ideas. Saban wouldn't be able to stockpile fired coaches as analysts, don't blame him now since it is allowed. Clemson wouldn't be allowed to have a 30 person staff just to steal signs. Would be similar to a salary cap, but on the staff side.

I also think that there is a place for a developmental league, maybe when the XFL returns. Not everyone wants to go to college.

Players getting paid is just going to expand the divide imo. Players deserve to be paid, especially the stars for their likeness etc..

Also make it mandatory 4 year scholarships. I think ND is the only school plus the BIG10 that gives 4 year scholarships. Everyone else gives 1 year rolling.

I thought most schools went to the four year scholarships already.

4 year scholarships by themselves don’t fix anything. Schools can still push kids out to transfer if they underperform.

It needs to be 4 years guaranteed regardless of transfer. In other words signees count against scholarship numbers for 4 years even if they transfer out.

That’s likely to never happen though. Most players these days aren’t being pushed out as much as they are leaving on their own to seek more playing time. Can’t see a school get hit because a 4* QB can’t beat out the guy in front of him. So we want to penalize a school for a player that doesn’t want to compete?

The 2 teams I'd put money on to be in the final ('Bama & Clemson) are 2 teams that have accounted for 7 of the last 10 championships. It gets boring, unless you're a 'Bama or Clemson fan. The question is, can we realistically expect other teams to do whatever it is that these two schools are doing to have that sustained success, especially in 'Bama's case? Or do we just ride it out, knowing that dynasties don't last forever, and wait for those 2 programs to come back to earth and parity ensues? Will parity ensue? Or is the current system set up where a 'Bama & Clemson are above the rest is more a more likely scenario than there's half-a-dozen great teams each season who have a real chance to win it all?

We already have that answer.

I’m so glad y’all playoff thumpers got your way,.... this is the real shit. No doubt. But I can hear y’all crying on Twitter about the way to stop all these blowouts is by expanding the playoff even more,... because the disease always curses the disease. So glad the inmates run this asylum.

In his post game interview Saban said it best --its the players. Ala can have all the extra coaches facilities etc but without those players they aint winning. You have got to limit how many 5/4/3 star guys a team can land. The thought of bastardizing the star ranking and thus another cheat can be monitored closely and correctly. Expanding the playoff is just a ^%$*!@ idea. Limit how many stars you can sign and monitor it tightly with the correct enthusiasm. Break the rules and you get the 'death penalty'. Hell these kids arent stupid
Mack Jones was going to Kentucky until Saban landed him to be a back up and more than likely knew he wouldnt play in front of Hurts and Tua but he kept him from going to Kentucky and creating a problem when they played Ala. This way he would have been unable to go to Ala unless they dropped another 4 star player. My enjoyment comes from watching the Irish thru the season because after that its horse^%(! competition. As far as Kelly is concerned he's a stud of a coach and has done about as much as possible under the circumstances-which arent going to change.

Did you guys know that the old BCS formula has had the same final four teams every year since the beginning of the current playoff format? Even this year with OSU's 1/2 schedule. Interesting.

Was it unfair when Holtz and Vinnie Cerrato we’re bringing in 4 straight number #1 classes back in the day?

Paying players is going to ruin football more then the sneaky cheating payments do now.

These kids go to school for free, meals provided, a large portion of their clothing provided, their medical provided, their tutors provided, free travel to places they most likely would get to go too, get to play on national tv at no cost to them, if they can’t make it to the NFL and they do their school work they are set up for life with the connections each school has and if they make it to the NFL the coaches and facilities they used for free helped them get there. If you put a dollar amount each of these I would say they are getting paid real nice now.

Don't think the school should pay them but they should be allowed to make money outside the university, such as endorsements.

I wish they would realign conferences to 10 teams only and have it be geographically based. No conference championship games either. Start the season with 2 non-conference games before playing the 9-game conference schedule.

Have 8 10-team divisions where the winner of the divisions get an automatic berth the into the playoff, plus 4 wildcard teams based on resume.

The 50 teams not in the 8 conferences (e.g. Central Michigan, Kent State, East Carolina, Western Kentucky, Troy State, Fresno State, etc.) form a new College Football subdivision and have their own playoff.
Rank the teams 1-12 and have the first 4 get a bye. Then have 5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, and 8 vs. 9 in mid-December at the higher seed's home field.

Then have the quarterfinals on New Year's Day, semis on the following Monday/Tuesday and the National Championship game on Martin Luther King Day.

... a bunch of these kids have families in poverty or at least low income back home. Money is not just going for extra pizzas. I remember Mama Lynch saying that she and Aaron couldn't find enough money to buy him a proper pair of shoes to go to the prom.

The in-the-living-room BagMan often hands the bag to the Mom (or Dad, if around, or Grandma) not the kid, from what I heard from the assistant coach (not ND) that I talked to. He also (in one "famous" individual) flourishes The Bible at the adult, not the kid. Any successful on-the-field player might expect favors to trickle over to his Mom (etc) during his career until he can make it into the League with big money.

Saw many (opinion) articles on this, both recently and in the past. Just wanted to create a non conflictual (hopefully) discussion on this.

Currently, as everyone knows, there is a four team playoff. Needs to stay the same, go to 8 or go to 16?

Scholarships. Currently at 85. Saw an article where reducing scholarships would spread the player to college wealth. What do you think?

Ranking. With preseason rankings and weak strength of schedule, how does this impact CFB? Many of college elite teams have for many years prospered off of starting ranked very high and then being allowed to play 1-2 challenging games a year, 3-4 average at best games and with 4-5 ho-hum games thrown in the schedule. One loss against one of their two difficult games does not push them down much in the rankings. Should SOS be the primary factor in rankings? Should preseason rankings being disallowed? If ranking, at what point in the season are rankings released?

Making admission requirements the same for athletes as it is for normal students? Argument is many of todays athletes would not be admitted to the college of attendance if it was based on their academic achievements alone.

Pay athletes? Argument is the $100k scholarship is payment enough when they arent spending their lives paying back student loans. Allowing athletes to work offseason? Would that open up more even corruption opportunity?

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that ND admin should should allow the Football Program the horses to compete.

Until they do, it will be another 27 years or longer until ND Football changes the narrative.

I'm sick of the fan board narrative.
" Well.... We can't be a powerhouse because of the rigorous academic standard."

You know why that is such BS, because the biggest issue is we can't recruit and develop an elite QB and that position isn't filled with idiots who can't make the grades.

Thats the point the ability to get them in has changed and as long as Kelly keeps over achieving it will and should remain the same. You could keep the same standards if other schools were not able to pretty much do as they please. Limits to star power or ratings is the answer.

So, because ND makes things harder on themselves other schools should be limited to the amount of star players they can have? Makes no sense. If ND wants to self impose restrictions to being an elite team, that’s on them. Shouldn’t affect what other schools are allowed to do.

College football is not going to change it's entire landscape to accommodate Notre Dame.

Notre Dame needs to understand that society and life is not static. Things change and evolve. Notre Dame must do the same.

I'd go back to no NC game. A fantasy, sure, due to ESPN contracts. This year it would have worked out for Ohio State in the Rose, Clemson in the Orange, Bama in the Sugar, Irish in the Fiesta and Oklahoma in the Cotton. All five would probably have won and regular season records would have meant more.

Committee members are considering a reduction of full-padded camp practices (from 21 to eight), the complete abolishment of collision exercises (such as the “Oklahoma” drill) and limiting a team to two scrimmages per camp (lowered from three and a half).

Not the OP of this thread but didn’t know where else to put this. Whatever on the Oklahoma drill but the practice change would be unbelievable. Drastic change. What did we see when who Navy didn’t practice tackling? Hammer the over of every Week 1 game. And what tackling is not okay before the season but once the season starts go at it? Don’t see how this reduces concussions by any tangible amount. The study sample size is so small.

It's probably just an extrapolation of expected collisions per play or something. Guys are playing ~80 plays on Saturday... they are probably well surpassing that number several times over in a given week during a hard summer/fall camp setting.

I can see the benefits to any effort to reduce the opportunities for full-speed collisions in scrimmage settings, even if there is some general sloppiness and rust that teams are noticeably knocking off early in the year.

LIke it or not we're going to have to accept that football as a sport will not be able to continue as it is for much longer. The risk of brain injury is practically a guarantee and is being proven clinically. The money makers in the sport are not going to escape liability forever.

Efforts to reform the sport so far are just bandaids and won't save it long term. I've come to terms with the fact that the sport I enjoyed playing as a kid and watching as an adult aren't going to be around forever.

Life is imperfect. So is CFB. I'm just going to enjoy it and hope ND continues to improve.

Love the fixes by all the Good Idea Fairies.
