Yeah, I was blitzed for that game too. I was drunk the whole season now that I look back on it. I shouldn't have said 'he never made a play' since I started drinking heavily as soon as pregame came on.

So Ewell is announcing at noon est this Friday and expectations are high that he will be Irish. Is there anyone else in strong consideration for his commitment or would it be shocking if he picks someone else?

Was anyone sober for that game? Honestly, 12 tackles and 2 TFLs and a sack are pretty poor for a DL that starts ~11 games. But that said, obviously he made a couple of plays, so I missed those.

For the record, Tillery only started 3 games and played 380 snaps last year. For comparison...

Tillery
380 snaps
9 solo tackles
3 assisted tackles
2 TFL
1 sack

Cage
283 snaps
8 solo tackles
10 assisted tackles
4 TFL

Cage with better production per snap as a year older. But either way, Tillery really didn't play THAT much football, wasn't in a glamour position for numbers, and dealt with some injuries.

Not he wasn't great at all. But he's a victim of the classic media whiplash effect following the comments from Kelly two springs ago.

Also note that Tillery flipped over to defense after being recruited as an OL (and played at a small high school). Unclear how much experience he really had coming in on the defensive side of the ball.
Either way, he's one of those guys with all the potential in the world - I mean, just look at him - who could either be a solid contributor for the next three years, or become an absolute stud. It's really up to him.

Tillery kind of reminds me - dating myself here - of Grant Irons, who was in my class at Notre Dame. Super talented. Played every game as a freshman and had loads of potential that he never quite lived up to on the field. Had some injuries, which didn't help. But ultimately he peaked early. Wasn't drafted. He hung around the NFL for a few years as a free agent but never made much dent. That said, he was a model citizen, two-time captain, active and visible on campus in all the ways you love to see a Notre Dame student-athlete be. He did great in life. And pretty good at football. Tillery seems like he could go that way. Though you hope he winds up doing great at both, playing his way into a big rookie paycheck and retiring at age 26 while he still has his brain.

Anyway, this Ewell kid would be a steal. Go get him.

So Tillery hasn't lived up to expectations after his Frosh year? Really?? Maybe BVG isn't the problem with defensive recruiting. It may be the completely unreal expectations of the fan base.

It's not an uncommon opinion. ISD and Coach D on the podcasts have expressed their disappointment with how Tillery approaches football and have said that they weren't really impressed with his performance last year.

Nope. Not what I'm saying at all.
Tillery was fine for a freshman. Contributed even while learning a new position and jumping from a small HS to as big a college stage as there is. He flashed a lot of potential. But there seems to be some concern out there that he's not as serious about football, and maximizing his potential in football, as he could be. (God forbid, a student-athlete wants to be a student, too!)
There are far worse things in this world than using football to get a great education. But if that's Tillery's focus he may not wind up an All-American candidate/early-round draft pick - which is the kind of ceiling his talent level would suggest.
Hopefully he can do both. But really, what happens the next three seasons is up to him. Will be interesting to watch him develop.

Anyway, Ewell!

I'm waiting to see how he does this year. He came in with a lot of expectations. When you look back at his recruiting, he was having a lot of fun always going to LSU games and stuff. The Showtime series had him on quite a bit and he came across to me as someone still having a lot of fun, traveling abroad, etc... really enjoying the college life. Nothing wrong with that but I am just wondering how focused he is on football. I like the very well-rounded, student athletes (Corey Robinson) that can be involved with many things at Notre Dame and still perform at a high level. Takes a lot of self-discipline to be able to manage your time well to excel both on and off the field. Lets hope he can do it.

Sorry, probably should have put this in Tillery's thread.

Frank and Coach D are pretty well known for being ultra concerned about football without much perspective with the nuances of being a student-athlete at Notre Dame. That's not a bad thing per se, it's just the corner they tend to inhibit with this type of topic.

Certain aspects to Tillery's approach may be frustrating when looking through the lens of a football factory but it's not entirely fair to him to judge solely through that lens. Especially after a true freshman season when, at worst, he was serviceable.

Serious QU for the mods, can there be a private group or at least a thread hidden somewhere for us who want to, to discuss how ND team/players are realistically stacking up compared to whatever teams we want to compare them to (I vote championship caliber teams)?

Where we can talk about the current team's/coaches/recruiting shortcomings and where they need to improve, who needs to improve, etc., without lighting the tinder box for those who don't like to hear anything bad about players/coaches/team?

I promise to spend most of my time in the real talk thread if it exists and out of the home improvement thread.

If this is true, can you post 'how to' in the site help thread, or here, or pm me or something? I'd like to get this started.

It's funny because it already exists.

Now I has a sad for apparently not being worthy of serious discussion.

It seems like you just have a problem whenever people disput anything you have to say.

While well roundness is what we would ask for it if was our kid, fact is that rarely do those that straddle the fence equally excel at both. Robinson was a great example of what a ND student athlete ideally should be but not as a football fan you want him to be. Robinson wasnt a worldbeater by any stretch of the imagination during his playing days. He had some really amazing God given abilities but you could tell he wasnt a athletic workaholic like Floyd was back in his days.

I think you could very well see Tillery be the same as the Robinson. Good enough to start, not good enough to worldbeat. Get a great education and land a great job.

Now your just being a hater. Koon keeps it the realest of anyone on this board. His legal name is simply "Keeping it 100". He has no probs, grudges, or personal disdain with or against anyone on this board and will listen to everyone's opinion at least once before correctly deciding that his own opinion was better to begin with. #StopTheHate #EverybodyJustLoveWhatKoonSaysAlready #Pixiesticks
