Awesome! Im not super optimistic about our roster next year but I have faith that Brey will find a way to field a competitive team.

Been waiting for Brey to both up the ante on the non-conference schedule now that we have moved up in the CBB world in addition to scheduling old Big East Rivals. Put Marquette back on the schedule and I'll be thrilled. DePaul is pretty terrible but could be a good draw for ND Alums in Chicago as well.

Is Temple Gibbs expected to come in and start right away?

I don't think that's the expectation but I think most people certainly hope he is capable of doing that. Tory Jackson and Eric Atkins both started at PG their freshman years IIRC so it's certainly not unprecedented.

Marquette can get bent. Let them wallow in insignificance (unless we are 20 point favorites, then lets go whoop that butt).

Official: Delaware hires Irish hoops assistant Ingelsby

Always happy to see our assistants take head coaching jobs elsewhere. Hopefully he does really well and will be our head coach some day.

Always great to see an asst. make an upward move. Unfortunately, we lost another asst. to Georgetown, and it wasn't a promotion. His move was lateral. Disappointing to say the least.

Interested to hear what people think the starting lineup will be, and how the rotation will shake out.

I think:

Gibbs
Vasturia
Beachem
Colson
Geben

Rotation players in order of playing time:
Farrell, Ryan, Pfleuger, Burns, Torres

I think there is enough experience, talent, and depth on the roster that Brey will actually be willing and able to play 10.

I really hope that Gibbs steals the show during the summer and nails down the starting point guard spot. I think that he would make the starting lineup so much more dynamic.

Farrell will be the starting PG (at least in November) but I wont be surprised if Gibbs takes over that role before ACC play starts. Other than that, I'd say thats pretty accurate. That roster has NIT written all over it though

Brey continually finds a way to get his roster to over perform. In the regular season at least. Annually projected in the lower half of the conference but always seems to be near the top. I think this season will be much of the same. Rex should be a solid contributor as well, likely the 6th man off the bench.

Anyone else catch the first 2 games?

Couple thoughts:

1.) It's a weird feeling watching us play. At the same time, I feel like were a much better team and a worse team. I know that doesn't make sense. I think it has to do with how much the talent is spread around this team instead of being so top-heavy. Short of VJ for a few spells here and there, I don't look at one guy and go "He can get us a bucket against an ACC team if we need one". But, at the same time, I trust 4 guys on the floor (in some cases 5) to actually take the shot and make it if it's open. It's an odd feeling watching this team so far.

2.) Geben is going to be important. I know Seattle played like hot garbage, but he at least played strong inside against a pretty thick, 7'3" guy. He boxed and boarded well. We're going to need that. He's also been pretty good help side, which leads me to...

3.) Maybe it's playing down to the competition, but we still look bad defensively. Yea, we have some good stretches, but many of those were helped along by teams just clanking open shots. We're much more athletic on defense, but I've noticed a bunch of blow byes on guys like VJ and Vasturia (Steve especially, although maybe that's because I focus on his on the ball D). I still don't think we're a well coached defensive team, but hopefully our athleticism covers some of that up this year.

4.) Good lord can we put out lineups that can flat score. We have shooters. As I told my wife, because of how well we shoot the ball, we're going to be in some games we shouldn't against great teams, and blow out some good teams. On the flip side, when we go cold (like against Bradley), we're going to lose a few games to some teams we should beat, and maybe handely.

We're going to beat either Duke, UNC, or Virginia this year once. But, we'll loose one to GT, BC (God Forbid), or Wake.

This is going to be a roller-coaster season.

Wow, you are severely underrating Bonzie Colson. That dude is going to be really good the next 2 seasons.

I'd love to be wrong, but I worry about him being an "alpha" with his skillset and size. His game reminds me a lot of a post version of Roosevelt Jones, but without the handles (although Bonzie is a better shooter, which says a lot about Roosevelt's jumper..).

If we need a bucket, and he's improved his passing, I'd love to see the offense work through him, but that's a very big if.

Bonzie is going to average 15 and 8 this year. That's going to be huge. But I'm not sure I want my go to guy being a 6'5" post player with a questionable mid-range game and an average at best passer.

6'5" with the wing span of a guy that is 7'. If he was a freshman, I could see why people would doubt him because of his size. But the kid continues to show that his size doesn't limit him. Hell, it seemed like he was out performing Auguste at times last season.

Bonzie went off for 31 last year against Duke at Cameron Indoor. You could make an argument that Colson is more valuable than VJ on this particular roster. We have a shit ton of guards than score, but we don't have a lot of guys like Colson who has a very unique physique and is definitely not afraid to go against the trees.

He can score, and he "can" be a mismatch. That game against Duke wasn't even his most impressive, as I'd say that the UNC game (games even, though it wasn't AS good) were better than Duke, as Duke was basically 4 guards and a center playing a awful 2-3 at that point. He also played a good game against IU, where they had to throw a guy the same size out at Colson, and he'll dominate that match-up.

But he also disappeared against some teams who didn't have good players at his position, just size (see Florida State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest - although the Thomas kid was tough, NC State or the NCAA Tourney).

Zach Auguste isn't on the post to draw attention, and DJ isn't here to break down a defense. Because of that, I think Bonzie will get more opportunities to score, but his offensive efficiency will go way down (I think he was 1st in that category in the ACC last year).

He wasn't our main option last year, I'd argue that he was the 5th unless particular match-ups presented themselves. This year, he will be. Teams tend to guard the 1st or 2nd option a bit different than they do the 5th. I really do hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see him as the guy you give the ball to when we need a bucket at the end of a game.

Nice win tonight against Loyala (MD) 83-48. I know the first three opponents have not been great opponents but they've beat them all by 20+. Nice to see considering in the past I remember some close games or even losses to these "gimme" games. I have a feeling this team will have an impressive season.

Tonight will be the first opportunity to really see what kind of team we could have this year.
