Question... and i'm not trying to be a devil's advocate here... but why would you not count kids that go to lower schools? Talented kids go to small schools all of the time. Randy Moss, Deontay Greenberry, etc. Hell... there are tons of kids that end up on NFL rosters that don't even get rated coming out of high school like Ben Rothlisberger and Antonio Brown.

I guess I don't get why a 3 star going to Tulane or a 4 star going to Western Michigan should be taken out of the recruit pool. Especially when they were evaluated like the rest of them?

You do count every 5-star no matter where he goes. You just don't use top 1% of 3,000 as a basis for justifying a five star rating. The reality is that 5-stars tend to go to the best programs.

EDIT: They're not out of the recruit pool, it's that 1,000 or more (guestimate/example) 1 or 2 star and unranked guys highly dilute the 3,000. So the 1% is like, well, "lies, damn lies and statistics." Not how I judge 5-stars.

Now cut that number by at least two-thirds, unless you want to count schools Tulane and North Texas et al. That makes the percentage of top players playing big-time football a ton smaller, and your percentage a lot bigger.

I don't think Hayes has earned his rating in pads, but like Lucci said, I'll take it.

6 months from now we won't be thinking about stars. He is a great athlete who has had trouble staying healthy in HS. I am excited to see if the athleticism translates to production and to see if he lacks durability or just had bad luck. I agree he didn't earn his rating, but I am no less excited to see what he can do.

But why should 3 star kids going to Tulane need to be taken out of consideration when you are talking about the pool as a whole? I just don't get it.

Sorry I added this edit to my last post late:

First of all I think rankings are pretty stupid. Who really knows who the #10 or the #42 player is. But if you're going to do it the top 1% of all kids who sign FBS scholarships sounds like an elite player. And I couldn't care less if it's Bama or Tulane signing players.

I like the explanation I shared earlier that one of the talking heads heads gave:

The 5 star = projected 1st round pick, 4 star = projected NFL player, 3 star equals = solid college starter. yada yada yada.

I'd top it off with 5 "Gold Star" players each year. Guys who project to be immediate impact All American types as freshman and who you would best project to be All Pro's at the next level.

This year I'd select:

Rashan Gary
Dexter Lawrence
Greg Little
Ben Davis
Tommy Kraemer

I could have selected Rahshaun Smith, Jacob Eason, Shea Patterson for 5th but it came down to TK and Demetris Robertson and TK made it easy by already being committed.

As for the five-star with the biggest bust potential, I’m going to go with our last five-star in Daelin Hayes. Hayes is a terrific talent and a high character kid, but the injuries his sophomore and senior seasons have me a bit worried down the line. Can he hold up in the college game and how will he handle the step up in competition after playing around six games over the last three years?

A couple years ago, I went with Speedy Noil on a hunch and last year was Josh Sweat due to injury questions, so I’m much better calling the sure things than the busts, clearly.

Signing Day Eve: Early Enrollee Capsules - Irish Sports Daily

6-4, 247
Detroit, Mich./Skyline
ISD 4-star, Rivals 5-star, Scout 4-star, 24/7 4-star, ESPN 4-star
Recruiter: Mike Elston
Recruiting Rundown: This was a true back-and-forth recruitment. Notre Dame began recruiting Hayes as a freshman. In the summer between his sophomore and junior years, the Irish extended an offer and we haven’t come across many prospects more about landing an offer than him. Notre Dame was immediately installed by many as the favorite. Then Hayes shocked just about everybody by giving a commitment to USC and readying himself for a move to California just a couple weeks later. In what seemed a blur, a Midwestern prospect with the Irish as his leaders was a USC pledge living on the West Coast. But Hayes eventually moved back to Michigan and Notre Dame never lost touch. Slowly, the Irish began to make progress and he eventually made a couple visits to South Bend. By the time Steve Sarkisian was out at USC, Hayes was clearly trending toward the Irish. Notre Dame had to beat out Ohio State and Michigan State in the end, but held on to do just that.
Expert Analysis From Uyeyama: There isn’t a player with more athletic potential in this entire recruiting class than Hayes. For all of the elite athletic and physical traits he possesses, he has not played much football the last three years. Although he can be physically dominant and flashes some violent shock in his hands, he does not play with consistent technique and lacks recognition when it comes to run blocks. He will bully his man at the point of attack, but gets caught up with that instead of knowing where the guy with the football is.
Rushing the passer is where he has the potential to truly be special. He can be a big-time player at the next level if he’s healthy and gets the right coaching and I am excited to see Keith Gilmore get to work with someone of his talent level. He may not be the top defensive end prospect in the nation right now, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up being the best to come out of this class four years from now.

Yeah, they put out the videos of coaches commenting on the EEs and then pulled them down right away.

Gilmore saying that he thinks Daelin can help out at DE while Elston said he's going to fight to keep Hayes at LB. Should be interesting but even Elston noted that he's already 250 lbs. Isn't full go right now, per the coaches.

Nothing wrong with a 250lb LB if he can move.

Keith Arnold's write up on Hayes had a vine of him receiving his pot of gold letter. Kind of funny.

I just spent 10 straight minutes staring at that GIF on my phone in my office. Well done!

There's a distinct lack of gif's today, I feel like people aren't excited about signing day. This is tradition, damn it!

Like mentioned in another thread, his coach and former teammates were on campus today. His coach told BGI after the visit that Hayes is up to 248 now and restated that he'll be less than full to for the spring. Last part we already knew but the weight is interesting. 10 lbs. pretty quick.
