This is a huge game but I'd rather beat Bama in the playoffs/championship. They will be a stalwart in the playoffs for the next decade and beating them on the biggest stage will solidify NDs place amongst the top tier.

But beating tOSU as defending national champs would be a great step along that path. I just wish our game were later in the evening. Afternoon games always feel weird.

This is the beginning of 2016. Next season has been "the year" in my eyes since the '17 schedule was finalized based on the roster CBK was building. Add to that all of next years teams will be down either because they are in transition under first / second year coaches, losing more players than ND or are losing 3 year starting QB's (4 of them!). Lastly, out of the traditionally strong programs, ND only visits UT and SC on the road and they are both not up to their historical standards at the moment. Throw in NCSt and those are the only 3 games ND plays at an opponents home field.

I don't know about you guys but I'm aiming high. I'm rooting for Sparty to win it all so I can sit out back at Legends after the game on Sep 17th, light up a Cohiba and celebrate the Irish beating two current national champs within 9 months.

Gun to your head, does anyone on here besides maybe CrazyBalski or Bogs pick us to win? And no offense to either of you, I like you both.

Both teams are 2-dimensional on offense and can move the ball. They're a better running team, we're a better passing team, but each can move the ball regardless. I trust their defense way more than I trust ours.

You can only think of two people that would pick ND?

I read it correctly but typed OSU by accident.

Oh ok. I figure those two would definitely pick ND. IDK about anyone else - personnel wise I think it's a really tough argument to make for us. I see the offenses as a wash.

I'd take their DL over ours, although Washington being out evens it a lot.

Their LBs are significantly better than ours IMO. All 3 can flat out play and Lee and Raequon McMillen or whatever his name is are monsters. I know we have Jaylon, but Joe is going to get ran through the goal post, and Onowala - did he play this year? I never notice that guy, good or bad.

Secondary, theirs is also significantly better than ours IMO. I think the talent is comparable, but they actually master their scheme whereas we have significant issues. They also have a 1st round talent at safety.

Sounds like you should bust out the prediction thread/poll, GK.

Buster, this is me just thinking out loud, but i am starting to feel that this game is the most important one of my lifetime too. I cannot think of a team that I would want ND to beat more than Ohio State. And it really doesn't matter what their record is, or the fact that they one the title last year. I think it would be the single most gratifying victory we could have minus winning a national title at this point. I let it simmer a little, and now I am convinced by what you said.

Haha yeah I decided to watch the game in Chicago so I didn't end up in jail due to the bars here. Social media has been extra unbearable, certain friends have been on radio silence with me, etc.

The thing is I'll be more upset with Ohio State winning than Notre Dame losing. This comes down to Buckeye hate not Irish love for me.

Translation:

I don't know any of their names, or how to spell them, but they sound good. I think some of them may or may not play, as well... What I'm saying is.. I like em.

FIFY. I couldn't care less what their names are, I don't care to learn them. But I watched a lot of OSU football and that defense has been nasty throughout the year, especially when it was time for a critical stop.

Lmao, that's probably for the best. I would love to be up there to watch with all my friends in Toledo. They are all huge Buckeye fans, so I'm sure I would not hear the end of it if they win.

It's kind of funny, I woke up thinking about this today and thought ya know, Buster is right lol. This game is huge, and a win could realistically thrust us right back into the upper echelon of college football.

I think ND wins. I do not think OSU has looked particularly good this year.

I told you not to move to Cbus, it has tainted your football perspective. Of course OSU's defense looks good/ great when they're playing MAC teams and below average B10 teams.

Amen. Ohio State fans are the absolute worst! I still feel the pain of that 06 Fiesta bowl from time to time it was so traumatic. Other than winning a championship beating OSU might be the best result for any ND season for me.

1. Championship
2. Beat OSU
3. First round playoff win
4. Beat Michigan
5. Beat USC

2 and 3 are extremely close.

I watched them a lot too. I disagree with them being nasty.
They took advantage of the games in which their talent was way superior to their opponents. I don't believe they had a single game against a team with the same level of talent as ND. I think it's really difficult to judge how good they are based upon who they played this year. Heck, Indiana, with injuries to their RB and QB looked like an offensive juggernaut against them. Indiana...

Agreed.

I enjoyed the natty and the Holtz era.

But this game can set us back a year or two.

We win, we're ahead.

Because you're from Ohio. From my perspective (from Indiana with relatives that are Michigan fans) it would be ....

1. Championship
2. Beat Michigan (I totally HATE scUM football)
3. First round playoff win
4. Beat U$C
5. Beat O$U

3 and 4 would be extremely close.

Advanced stats still point to them being a really good team (even better than ND in most categories) and those are supposed to be opponent-adjusted. SBNation had an article on that last week or earlier this week, I believe.

Not saying advanced stats tell the whole tale. I do believe the "eye test" is an important one.

I guess I took exception to them being considered "nasty". I think that is way overstating the way they played this season.

Va Tech - 42-24(W)
Hawaii - 38-0(W)
Northern Illinois - 20-13(W)
Western Michigan - 38-12(W)
Indiana - 34-27(W)
Maryland - 49-28(W)
Penn State - 38-10(W)
Rutgers - 49-7(W)
Minnesota - 28-14(W)
Illinois - 28-3 (W)
Michigan State - 17-14(L)
scUM - 41-13(W)

I know one thing, they sure aren't battle tested...

I know it's hard for people to accept it but Indiana IS an offensive juggernaut right now. #9 overall in Power 5 conferences, #5 in when you delete the BIG-12. They faced Michigan, Michigan St, tOSU, PSU, Iowa and Wake. The only team above them in the offensive rankings that could possibly come close to that schedule is Ole Miss and statistically they don't.

Throw in 12 healthy games of Sudfeld & Howard and they are that much higher.

If you're going to judge the merit of my opinion based on how I spell player's names, save yourself the trouble because I'm not going to take the time to google player's names. I don't care to impress IE with my google skills, I try to get the point across and whether it's an O/A/U in Onowala, people know who I'm talking about.

Or bother to know whether they are playing or not?

We know you don't care what we think, Koon. You tell us several times a day.

Expert analysis, as usual. lol

Does anyone have a feel for onowala? He's the biggest anomaly I've ever seen start for 2 years in the sense I have no idea if he's good/bad because he never stands out as messing up/being out physicalled or making plays.
