I feel like you just ripped me, but I can't be sure.

No, not ripped at all.

When I read your post about being "not so different" I thought of where you and wizard's political posts seem to be on the universal spectrum and it triggered my response.

To perceive one's own action and thoughts doubled by the reality of another's thought. WOW! am I reading my fiance's mind.. or are we all going to be Ok

Good. As I mentioned in the "Drinking" thread, I'm working on an IPA growler this evening and I'd like to do so without trying to keep track of convoluted scenarios while I flip through different games.

Which is why there's zero need to expand the playoff as some have argued. College football is magical like that. You could even throw Clemson-Notre Dame on that list because we would have been in even with a loss to Stanford if we had beaten Clemson.

Good regular season matchups aren't always going to work out that way, though. Add in the fact that this year, any of the top 8-10 teams could make a legit run in the playoff. Why not expand it? Fans want it, more teams get a shot, and I'm sure you would find most coaches and teams want it.

Anyone with some Bowl knowledge care to explain why so many believe ND will be in the Fiesta opposed to the Peach? I want to buy tickets for the Fiesta before they announce Bowl games today but I dont want to see Iowa and Houston.

Yeah I was wrong about both teams.

Iowa was stronger than I'd thought.

MSU was less dominant and adaptive than I thought.

This game was two teams that ran similar everything and neither introduced much in the way of wrinkles to the offense.

Not any real Bowl knowledge, but I see the Peach Bowl being F$U against whomever. I don't see the excitement of a ND-F$U match-up this Bowl season as compared to the the Fiesta with ND playing either O$U or Houston. No doubt that ND is a definite fan base draw that all bowls would want.

I suspect Iowa gets the Rose Bowl nod against Stanford. I guess we'll no for sure tonight.

Here is a good article on the top 4:
CBS Sports

What I like about the article is there were good arguments for which teams fit in which spots in the top 4. Someone had OK as #1 even with a loss because Oklahoma looked like them to be the most well rounded team, and with Clemson not showing well defensively yesterday that's not a bad thought.

I think while I did not believe Iowa had the resume to be in the top 4, they showed they could hang with Michigan State who had the most overall impressive resume. They had more wins against teams with 10 wins that anyone, while Alabama (noted in the article) had only a single win over a 10 win team.

I also think that the way Stanford played makes them a solid contender that I would like to see against the field. They had a good schedule, beat a good ND team, and basically ran away from SC. I think they could easily win a game in this playoffs.

I also think that Ohio State, while having an overall weak schedule, could play with just about any team in the top 10. They had a close loss but still seem like a formidable team.

I also think ND could contend with any of the top 10 teams but don't think they would make it through the playoff field given their defensive problems, so I don't think ND's performance this year makes a case for more playoff teams while I think other teams do.

I still think the case to expand the playoffs is intact as I don't feel the top 4 are obviously on a tier above the next few teams, and think that the top 7 teams look good enough to contend in a 'real' playoff scenario.

MSU should be in at #3 now. Their resume is the best I have seen from anytime in recent memory. And if not for a loss to Nebraska they would be #1.

As for bowl games. The Fiesta is our likely desintation based on matchups of top teams. The Rose will get Iowa/OhioSt vs Stanford, The Sugar will probably take Ole Miss now that Florida lost vs the BIG12 top remaining team in OklaSt. The Peach will take a less than shiny FSU vs the Group of 5 leader Houston.

The flip side is that with the loss to Nebraska and without one of the most fortuitous blunders this college season in Ann Arbor.. Ohio State is playing Iowa last night. I've watched every Sparty game this year as I'm from Michigan and all my friends went to State.. Their defensive line can't fix their offense and secondary forever. CFP likely turns out really badly for them.

Dang. A full growler. At least you won't remember posting this...

I've already broken down to my wife about how our one-year-old daughter is so innocent and has no idea about things like mass murder or terrorism. So the evening is progressing about how you'd expect. Cheers.

A growler is a lot for you old folk? It's only like four glasses.

What kinda IPA did ya have though, Wiz?

Because it dilutes the regular season.
An eight team playoff renders the Iowa/MSU game (not to mention the MSU/OSU game) meaningless. It would just have been for seeding. Our game against Stanford too, at least for us. If you only play 12 games - and only three against good teams - and you can make the playoffs with two losses, what's the big deal?
While coaches would probably vote for an eight-team playoff b/c it makes it more likely they get in, I don't hear any great clamor from fans. Personally I'd rather watch great high-stakes games in October and November than have a couple more in January.
And when the dust settles, there's four clearly deserving teams. Not five or eight. OSU is the only non-playoff team with any case at all, and they lost their one big game. So, tough.

I hate the whole "it dilutes the regular season" argument against expansion. People have probably made that same argument A) against bowl games themselves, B) against a NCG, and C) definitely used that argument against the 4 team playoff.

Miraculously none of those happening "diluted" the regular season. I'm not necessarily a fan of playoffs in CFB but not because it "dilutes" anything. If you are truly trying to crown the champion, the best team, in CFB who cares if the regular season is "diluted?" Having 6 teams make the playoffs in the NFL probably "dilutes" the regular season a bit but who cares? Ultimately it is about crowning a champion.

Would MSU/Iowa been as meaningful under a 8 team playoff? No, but Clemson/Iowa in the first round of the playoffs would be just as meaningful.

With 8 teams in the playoffs you'd likely see something like this:
Clemson/Iowa
Alabama/ND
OK/Stanford
MSU/OSU

Plenty of drama and intrigue there.

You knew MSU would be "rewarded" for beating Iowa by moving up and now having to play Alabama in Dallas.

8 teams is absurd, no 2 loss team should have a shot at a run for glory. It may happen 1 day in 4 team, so be it. 6 teams max ONLY if first 2 have bye.

Uh don't look like trash against trash n beat Stanford they r in ou out

I don't think so. One way to interpret OU dropping from 3 to 4 is that the selection committee doesn't consider the Big 12 championship to be a real thing since they don't play for it, which would be good for ND.

Another way to interpret it is that they count winning a conference championship as one factor and then winning a conference championship game as another, which is really bad for ND.

Seems like the system worked out, overall. Bets 4 teams are in, and #5/6 may sometimes feel like they got shafted. No complaints with the final 4, they earned it.
