The Gamecock fans are freaking out. They thought they had Herman but they didn't. Then they thought Kirby Smart was all theirs - now they think he will be the guy at GA.

Columbia is melting down...

They are interested in Muschamp as well. Don't see that happening right now.

Still think Kirby ends up in Columbia as I think Ga is looking for a current HC and is foregoing the coordinator route.

Yeah, Muschamp would not go over well.

I think the GA job is too big for Kirby to jump right into, but the Gamecock fans are convinced he is going there. A few have even gone so far as to say that GA knew SoCar was going to hire Kirby and GA made this move to beat them to the punch because Kirby is who they really want.

I watched the THerman press conference and I don't think he closed the door. He is going somewhere.

Some reports out there that Herman agreed to the Ga job two weeks ago. I don't buy that but I do think he is a top candidate. I just don't see Kirby getting the gig. If Kirby goes anywhere... I am guessing S. Carolina. Guess we will see.

The problem with BK possibly going to the NFL, is that we wont know about it for awhile. Many of the potential colleges coaches will be already hired else where.

That's the thing, we will be scrambling for scraps or going the NFL route.

Yet Pete Carroll got the job with no college football head coaching experience, just got fired by New England and started his USC career with a 6-6 season.

I'm sure that kind of "sure bet" would be applauded now, right?

People around Indiana were scratching their heads when Butler hired Brad Stevens and the Pacers hired Frank Vogel. They both turned out okay.

Brad Stevens is a basketball genius.

Or you make a huge, blockbuster big $$ hire of an existing A-List coach. Those are your two options...
A) Take scraps or make an in-house promotion.
B) Whip your dick out and steal a coach like Patterson, Whittingham, Fitzgerald, Fedora, etc.

I'd consider all of those options a major downgrade.

... you think Gary Patterson -- a guy that built TCU from a nothing program into a legitimate title contender -- would be a "major downgrade" over Brian Kelly? You cannot be serious.

I was going to say everyone except Gary Patterson as his results would suggest he is a great coach. However, I left him in with the others because I'm not sure his way of building a program is agreeable with the requirements of an ND head coach.

True, he did it mostly through talent identification of overlooked and JUCO prospects. But he has run a relatively clean program at TCU, and I think while ND restricts your ability to recruit some sorts of guys it also opens doors to others he's never been able to get at TCU.

The other thing people forget is that he's actually a defensive mastermind, and his system is stupid good (and simple!) with the right athletes.

As you probably already know, Fitzgerald is an ND hater.

Patterson would be my #1 by a wide margin. TCU is similar to ND in a lot of ways-- a small, religious university committed to competing ethically and providing its athletes with a real education. Their GSR figures are regularly in the top-10 nationally. And Patterson has been wildly successful there; he's achieved far more than any of the other plausible candidates.

Hasn't TCU had a ton of guys arrested in recent history?

Not sure about arrests but I thought they had a big drug dealing ring with the football program get exposed recently, within a couple/few years.

Didn't really have that much to do with the football team, I stand corrected.

Two TCU football players were arrested 9/21/15, accused of beating up fellow students and stealing their Keystone Light beer. More from the linked article:

TCU has a recent history of player arrests.

In 2014, two players, Brandon Carter and LaDarius Brown, were arrested on marijuana charges in separate incidents. Brown was later dismissed from the team.

In 2012, four players were arrested as part of a campus drug investigation and were dismissed from the team. It came one season after the program reached its highest point under Patterson with an undefeated season and a victory in the Rose Bowl.

Also in 2012, starting quarterback Casey Pachall was charged with DWI and missed part of the season. He entered a treatment facility and returned to the team. His absence gave Trevone Boykin his first extended playing opportunity at quarterback at TCU.

Not sure that qualifies as a "ton". And it honestly compares pretty favorably to the stupid sh!t our players have gotten in trouble for under Kelly.

It was my understanding that Coach Patterson does not enjoy the schmoozing and media presence he would need to be head coach at ND. That is my only reservation.

I'm not sure I would be too upset if Sanford left to go get some head coaching experience, especially if it's at a P5 school.

If he succeeds, he could be our next head coach.

Wasn't a QB caught up in it?

You should be. My intuition is that he deserves a lot of the credit for Kizer's improvement (and our offense generally). If he gets a HC offer he can't refuse, I'd hope Kelly and Swarbrick would do everything within their power to get him to stay; assuming that's not possible, then we wish him well and hope he makes a triumphant return down the road. But even then, it would be a significant loss for the program in the interim; certainly something to be regretted.

I wouldn't be upset if Sanford left for a head coaching gig at a decent school. Selfishly if like him to stay, but you can't be mad at a dude for taking a good opportunity that he's earned and bettering his families financial security.
