I don't think Nick Watkins has played virtually at all this year. He's likely a bust, or he would've gotten more reps to this point.

Agree. I think the true freshman, Nick Coleman, has played more.

Didn't Butler replace him tonight? He probably has the inside track on starting next week.

He has another year of eligibility but it would depend on him getting accepted for grad school, which, given his academic history, may be an obstacle.

I'm going to respectfully disagree...but I could be wrong. KVR played as a true freshman so he has played three years. My understanding is, while a transfer "sit" does not count against you, an academic suspension does. Tried to find it online but had no luck. Any others know for sure the process?

You have 5 to play 4. Russell can come back next year if he/the school wants.

Anytime something is criticized it has to be a players fault, anytime something is complimented it's alway because of the coaches. That's complete bullshit.

I think you missed the point. NDSean famously blamed Kelly for everything last year and wondered not only if Kelly was a great coach, but if he was even a good coach. On and on he argued about how mediocre Kelly was. He didn't blame the players at all.

And then one game later (LSU), he declared Kelly almost on the level of Meyer and Saban. I'm not making that up.

He's my hero.

I never wish injury upon anyone and hate that KVR got hurt like I would any player. That said KVR was mostly awful this year, hope we get bettter production out of whoever takes his spot.

That's statistically just not true. KVR wasn't an NFL starter this year like we had all been told he would be by the media (and KVR himself), but he's actually had a pretty decent year.

What is time frame in stress fractures?

Did some reading tonight on stress fracture, "a couple of weeks to several months" was the window in he articles. They stressed getting the athlete off his feet, rest, and rehab. Kelly didn't provide any details other than "stress fracture". A follow up question at the PC was, "Is it his left or right." Kelly responded, "Yes!" There was laughter and I suspect the realization that Kelly didn't have much in the way of details.

My problem with him is he was boom or bust. His consistent failure to turn and look for the ball was infuriating. But I will admit his attitjde rubs me the wrong way, that combined with not living up to admittedly unrealistic expectations has really soured me on KVR. I hope he's not seriously hurt and wish him thr best whether it be playing football or other edevearors but Im not a dan of him as a player and think hea def one of our weakest links on defense.

Opinions about Russell aside, ND can't catch a fucking break with injuries.

And for the record, I DO NOT think we're better off without him.

This^^^!!!!!

I don't know what it is, but it always seems like we get hit hard by the injury bug. This season has been especially hard as it all started even before the season started with Jones. Then it's Tarean, then Malik.., so on and so forth. Honestly it is amazing we have the record we do right now. That in itself is a miracle on it's own. I can only hope that our team can put a great effort for three more games. Next week will be a tough one for sure as we've had a bad couple of games and need to be prepared to play a very good Stanford football team.

This isn't bad for Stanford game, not good. It's bad for playoffs as he looked like he finally got into shape, and now sits without practice or proper exercise.

This team has a remarkable ability to play to their opponent's level. I still have faith they win next week, and make the playoffs.

Anyone else wonder if all these ankles could be from the Under Armor shoes? Supposedly most of our oline has high ankle sprains. Do these kids where ankle braces and tape up before games? When I coached all of out olinemen had to wear ankle braces for the games.

KVR I really didn't see anything that looked bad. Maybe I missed it.

CJ was the dreaded pull down from behind tackle, I hate those tackles so many injuries on those plays. It looked bad as soon as it happened. Love his fight and power but sometimes you need to just go down.

This is one of the great myths of the 2015 season.

Agree. One thing about Russel is that most of the times he got beat he was running right with the WR. Some were just great throws by the QB but often it was just lack of looking back for the ball. Obviously, that is a big part of playing DB but it's not like he's been getting torched by 3 yards all the time. He's also been a pretty good tackler and has come up with some big plays.

Thanks LA but the 5 to play 4 wasn't the question. As I said, I may be wrong, but I thought during the whole frozen five, someone brought up that an academic suspension uses up a year of eligibility. That is what I was hoping someone could confirm or disprove. KVR played as a freshman, sophomore and senior while being suspended his junior year. If the suspension year is somehow considered a "lost year" of eligibility than he has used up his four years. I have not been able to find anything on the NCAA website to prove either side of the debate. Do you have any information to support either side of this topic?

The only thing I have been able to find is this stat line from 247:

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 190 pounds
2013 Statistics: 51 tackles; 1.5 tackles for loss; one interception; eight pass breakups
Class (Eligibility Remaining): Senior (2)
Place On Depth Chart: No. 1 cornerback

According to them he has two years remaining so the suspension would not take away his eligibility. Hoping this is accurate.

I assumed KVR had another year but didn't Darrin Walls have the same issue and left after his 4th year (having only played 3). I have fogotten but would he have been able to come back if he wanted?

He definitely has another year. He has only been at ND 4 years, and he didn't play one of them. The NCAA never took away a year of his eligibility.

We constantly see people complain on this site that ND has too many nice boys, and we need more "swag", blah, blah, blah. When someone has it, people complain. Weird.

If he played to ability and level that his mouth is constantly spitting out, I'd have no problem with the attitude. Love the cockiness. Just back it up. He has not backed it up. Heck on the showtime series, he admits to not putting his all into practice and admits he's been struggling in games. Yet the mouth continues to run.
