I could totally see Freeze getting. Mullen isn't a terrible choice. Both have peaked in their current schools, IMO.

I don't know why you guys think SC is a great job? Crap facilities, crap location of LA, Long commute to work from any place you want to live, cost of living, cost of living and cost of living when and they don't pay as much as you'd think.

One other thing to keep in mind, SC's 20+ year hold on being LA's premier, pay to play football team ends soon. With the NFL sending 1 or 2 teams here, SC gets less desirable and count on more 40,000 - 50,000 crowds in that big ditch of a stadium.

Oh, come on. I can't speak to the facilities or the pay at USC, but I have a hard time believing either aren't plenty big time. The cost of living isn't much different than the Bay Area or Seattle, and is covered just fine by the size of the paycheck relative to, say, College Station, Texas. And - to the extent big-time college football coaches have time/inclination to enjoy their neighborhood - there are plenty of places to live within a reasonable commute. A lot more options than most college towns.

Kiffin - and I think Carroll - lived in Manhattan Beach, which is not a bad drive from USC, popular with the LA athlete crowd and downright delightful. You could do Pasadena, if the mountains are more your thing, and be at USC in 25 minutes non rush-hour. Or live downtown in a snazzy new condo and have a ten minute drive.

I agree with you on the second point, though. The NFL is coming. When they do, USC will need to get used to a different way of doing things.

Sumlin's the one we need to worry about. Dude's a good coach, a good recruiter, and enough of a presence to handle life at USC.
Then I'd think Whittingham, Gary Anderson, Fitzgerald. I wonder if they'd make a run at David Shaw. Or any chance Jeff Fisher is available?
I just see them staying on the West Coast and/or within the USC family. That's kind of the way they are. But probably they should've just kept Orgeron around.
Best for us, actually, if they can Haden and then have to replace him before they hire a new coach and the whole thing drags out well into the new year and Signing Day.

Sumlin isn't leaving. He's in a recruiting honey hole. They are throwing money at that program (and him) hand over fist. He just got the best d-coordinator in the conference, if not the country. He even has a helicopter there. That's a team that is 1 year away from being a force.

Somehow I think Sumlin is NFL bound at some point. He should have taken the job at USC a few years ago. The last thing the Trojans need is another in the coaching tree of Petey. Time for USC to hire from outside. Whittingham should at least get some serious consideration.

An interesting kind of outside the box idea is Sean Payton. He had a lot of success in New Orleans but his time is running out there. If he has any interest in the college game I think he could be a decent fit there.

Brian Kelly's comp is not a secret, he made about $1.2 million in 2013. Even if you triple that a couple years later in 2015, $3.6M is below average for the head coach of an elite program. And yes, there are nice neighborhoods near campus, the problem is that they are still in South Bend.

I'm not sure what you meant by very close, but unless you meant walking distance SC has great areas near it... Just off the top of my head,... Wilshire, Ocean Park, Hancock Park, Baldwin and Monterey Hills all have great neighborhoods and all are a short drive from SCs campus...

yeah it was when he was recruiting in Texas going after Lache Seastruck and those guys. Basically paid some guy like 10k for a dvd of "scouting" which did not include any footage of the players it was reported to feature..

Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports appeared from Los Angeles on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt tonight after Monday Night Football. Feldman discussed how USC sticking with the Pete Carroll coaching tree "clearly has not worked out". He said that after speaking to "some people around here, [USC's] best options might be at their two archrivals":
Jim Mora has beaten USC three years in a row, but USC has "much better resources" and beats UCLA "more than he wins" in recruiting. USC's "commitment and resources" might intrigue him, and his family loves LA.
"Probably tough to stomach" Brian Kelly for some USC fans, and Notre Dame fans would wonder why he would bother switching, but Kelly has been in his job for six years, "a long time to be the head coach of the University of Notre Dame, with the restrictions and some of the stuff you have to deal with there".
Both are "professional, adult head coaches who run a program and know what they're doing".
On Steve Spurrier, Feldman said that his success at Duke was the highlight of his career. He mused that Spurrier recognized that, after "a good run, turning South Carolina around, I think the window had closed on him, he saw that they were backsliding. I think he really recognized it, early this year, how far they were getting from where he wanted to be. I think, the competitor he is, I think it was getting really tough" to accept a 5-7 record, maybe only better than Vanderbilt.
Briefly discussing Will Grier, Feldman said that "a lot of cynical people" had noticed how much he had bulked up, much more than would be possible from a over-the-counter supplement. He doubted that his appeal would succeed, but said that a clarification of the NCAA's PED policy was needed.
