@NDsidBertschy: Tarean Folston underwent successful ACL surgery last Thursday in Florida. He returned to campus last night & started rehab this morning.

2017 draft will feature Chubb, Fournette, Cook, Perine.. maybe is not a bad idea.

Or better yet, come back next year in 2016, use your medical redshirt in 2017, and be the back in the 2018 draft.

54.4 yards per game is FA material.

This contradicts BK saying he doesn't know what's going on.

https://twitter.com/NDsidBertschy/status/645671241794363394

Sounds like these people are taking bits and pieces from these Twitter bits and jumping to some conclusions. Here are the actual quotes from the teleconference:

Q. I asked you last week, Tarean Folston, his surgery, has that been set yet, and is Notre Dame's medical team going to perform that?
COACH KELLY: I don't have the answer to that yet. That's still being discussed. So it's kind of out of my hands right now.

Q. With Tarean, are you having discussions with him about the surgery, or is it kind of his camp handling it right now?
COACH KELLY: Yeah, we've had discussions with Tarean. He's back here on campus. A lot of this stuff relative to his medical, I try not to get too much involved if they are doing it off-campus. And he did not have his surgery done with our medical group. So I just didn't want to get into the specifics of it.

Both the quotes are from the same teleconference, he's not giving different answers to different people at different times I don't think.

It sounds as though he just doesn't want involved in it. Looks to me like he just misspoke on the first question, trying to give the, "I'm not involved" answer and got it a bit twisted.

This sounds like a bullshit rumor, started by a sad person. Why is it getting 2 pages of play?

I don't think this is a big deal and here is why. First, it doesn't matter where he gets his surgery, all surgeons are going to be pretty competent, by and large. Maybe he had a family member who knew a great surgeon whom they trusted very much; a doctor-patient relationship is important. Second, having an ACL tear surgery is tough business. It's hard work recovering and in the immediate aftermath of the surgery, getting around is tough. Maybe he's closer to home where family can take care of him and mom can make him some home cooking while he recovers. We don't know the full extent of his injuries, but say he had a meniscus repair, he would have to be off of his feet for a certain time period. Being in dorms makes that very, very difficult. It makes sense to try and recover at home in the short term, and not in a dorm where you have to go down a long hallway just to use the bathroom.

The sky is not falling. There are plenty of reasons that, should this rumor even be true, would not be cause for any concern.

Looks like Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery

Just going to put this here...just remember to breathe, everyone. A few days at home, let the post-op swelling improve and then back to campus to have daily PT and treatment by the athletic training staff. Seems that all is well.

Not to rip Folston but through three weeks of the season could you imagine Prosisie and Folston as a 1-2 duo. As good as anybody IMO, I'm just not sure if Folston would be putting up the video game numbers like CJ is.

Probably not, he'd be splitting carries with CJ. Where as CJ is carrying the bulk.

See I see Folston carrying the bulk of the load to keep the hits off Prosise. Folston being thunder and CJ being lighting because he is so dynamic in the open field.

The way CJ is running tho, could you really kept him off the field as the season went on?

No, but you can tell he needs those breaks just like any great running back. It would be a great duo, I just don't think Adams is ready for big time college football yet. But CJ doesn't get those chances if Folston hurts so I doubt he would be putting up those goofy numbers like he is now.

Its apparent that CJ has a knack for running in this zone blocking scheme. He's very patient as he works in the hole, lets the OL work their combo blocks and keeps his feet moving. Because of his size and strength he doesn't go down in the hole with arm tackles and as soon as the blocks are set he's out. However, where I think Folston would come in very handy is the short yardage situations. CJ just hasn't quite developed that part of the game to the degree that Folston had. Folston became quite a good at, even on outside zones, putting his foot in the ground/head down and picking those up.

True. I would like the younger backs to get more carries at this point. Run them till they cost us a drive, or turn it over. Get them some experience and have them ready.

Perfect complementary points!

From what I saw Saturday, Josh really blocked well and picked things up to protect the quarterback. That one GT linebacker in particular, the senior defensive leader, really brought it on his pass rush, and disguised his blitz expertly, but Josh picked it up like a vet, and beat him back. All in all Josh was pretty impressive.

With CJ you do have to ask, "When is less, more?"

He wouldn't be better than the 5th back taken this year. He wouldn't be taken at all, which would make him the 15th back in the class, at best?

Hearing that Dr. Andrews did the surgery and he's back at school answers all of my questions. I think ND wanted to have their people do the surgery and Folston wanted to protect his future by having the best guy do it. It's too bad that the speculation about his leaving school was forwarded as a way to try to undermine his decision but unfortunately that stuff happens.

Yup, would be very surprised if he wasn't suiting up for the Irish next season.

Exactly. Folston is still the most complete RB. Not a home run threat but he grinds out yards. We need him back with Prosise and an experienced Adams and Dex will give us a lot of options next year.

Interesting... Here is a question for those with more knowledge on sports medicine... what happens if the ligaments that are fused in together in place of the torn AC tear latter down the road??

How an ACL is reconstructed in Gif form.

Saw it on reddit thought it might be of interest lol

Cool gif, I think that is showing the typical repair. There is also a variation that was introduced a few years back called the "double bundle" repair. It was supposedly better for athletes who need to maintain their explosiveness. I don't know if there have been any studies comparing the two for "return to form" and durability.

The gif provided shows reconstructive surgery using a patellar tend graft (where they cut off a section of the patellar tendon to use as the new ACL). If this graft were to tear, they would redo the surgery using a new graft, most likely from a cadaver, although it is possible they would use a hamstring graft.

A graft from the patellar tendon is the preferred option. Hamstring grafts tend to cause more issues with hamstring strains on down the line. Using cadavers is the worst because there's the body's nature defense mechanisms that want to reject what it perceives as foreign material.

Debatable. It really completely depends on the preference and comfort of the doctor doing the surgery. The guy that did my surgery does repairs for many of the professional teams in Philly and swears by the hamstring.

The hamstring graft definitely causes less knee pain during recovery and it is arguably stronger than that patellar. Also, an increased risk of hamstring strains is generally overblown IMO.

With the way our O line played in the first half run blocking at least Walter Payton wouldn't have been able to find a whole. I thought pass protection was pretty good though.

So Rivals is doing a series on guys who will be deciding whether to go pro and one of the players is Folston. Their analysis reached the very obvious conclusion that he should stay but their prediction is Folston likely declares and enters the draft. This had never even entered my mind, I was surprised they even considered him as a player that could entertain the draft, so Im guessing their prediction is based on something they have been told from someone in the program or from Folston's camp. It would be such a boneheaded move for him personally and would be a shame for ND because I think Folston is poised for a nice season if he were to remain healthy. If he were to declare I would doubt that he even gets drafted.
