I did not think he was that good as some people were saying but when he got injured, the defense just fell down. Then i realized how important he was. He made the defense better with his presence, even being an average talent. You need players like this to succeed.

IMHO, it' Leadership at it's finest that we missed. A true warrior that went down in battle and as a team we suffered greatly from his loss. His mere presence on the field is what our Defense missed the most. He's fiery and contagious. In my opinion he's the glue to our defense.

IMO, Joe was exactly what we needed last year on D. He provided leadership that was already in short supply, made even shorter when Russell was suspended. He also miraculously learned the playbook down to every x and o. Those are his best traits. However, those traits won't stand out as much as everybody on the defense SHOULD know what they're doing and guys like Russell, Luke, Day, Jaylon and Rochell can provide excellent leadership. The way I see it, if and where Joe starts depends on the development of Onwualu, and where they put Jaylon. If Jaylon is put at SAM, then I see Joe at WILL and Nyles at MIKE. If Jaylons at WILL, then James is the only experienced guy right now with the athleticism to play SAM. Joe would stand no chance at SAM. Jaylon and Nyles need to be on the field, provided Nyles cleaned up the mental errors like he should.

Smith and Schmidt are the Notre Dame claim to linebacker greatness not Smith and somebody else. BGIF made all the correct statistical points, and others made the [weirdly ignored] leadership [and game savvy] points. Claiming that somebody is better or even equal to Schmidt on the [over-rated] eye-test criteria is a deduction that constantly boggles my brain on this site. Everything that my own ball-playing days taught me says that all sorts of less gifted team-mates have been WAY more valuable than certain Rolls-Royces who can't think or sense the game like they can.

I'm sure the coaching staff deserves some blame, but I don't know how much. In 2014 Schmidt was a hardworking senior with truly elite intangibles (leadership and knowledge of the defense). "Former walk-on holds together young front-7 decimated by injury and suspension with only spit and baling wire" was already Plan E, so how much can we fault them when a when Plan F ("True freshman holds together younger front-7 decimated by injury and suspension with even less spit and baling wire") didn't work out?

You know your injury situation is bad when you have to put a true freshman DT Hayes) in because the rotational true freshman DT (Cage) was out with injury. God that was horrible to watch (no knock on Hayes).

I do not think anyone was ignoring Schmidt's value, but recognizing Jaylon's amazing gifts. We can quibble about who is more valuable but we should all be happy they will both wear gold helmets this year. Jaylon's potential is much greater but joe seems to have mastered overachievement. We are in good shape at lb this year. I also think Morgan has superstar potential.

Reps, but wow!

But if he’s this excited for fall camp, what will the season opener against Texas feel like?

“That’s a ways off. We’ve got camp, a lot of practices between now and then,” Schmidt said with a longing grin. “But it will be just like every other time I’ve run out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium — the best day of my life.”

I've heard he broke his thumb but its supposed to be a non-issue

Put on a good cast and he can just hit 'em harder.

Reading some of the earlier posts though: I don't yet know exactly how but feels like we've got to find ways to get both Schmidt and Morgan (and of course Jaylon) on the field at the same time.
They're our three best LBs and it's really not close. Schmidt has all the intangibles. Morgan's incredibly athletic. Jaylon's Jaylon. I realize everyone's got their position, but we need to look for ways to get the best 11 on the field at once.

Great point! Reps! Let me help you with the first sentence of this one on the copy I have :

"The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven."
Knute Rockne

Also :

"Most men, when they think they are thinking, are merely rearranging their prejudices."
Knute Rockne

And :

"Football is a game played with arms, legs and shoulders but mostly from the neck up."

Was awarded the "Ultimate Herbie" (whatever the fuck that is) by Kirk Herbstreit in his yearly pre-season accolades. I like Herbstreit the best of probably any ESPN personality, so this is orders of magnitude better than an "Ultimate Dessie."

I like Herbie too, despite his Buckeye homerisms... another one just happened (Zeke), but I agree on that one.

Edit - gets bonus points for nailing Erin Andrews.

That really surprises me. I think Joe makes the defense great, but he, as an individual, is not great. He recorded .5 tackles for losses last year. He's OK, but not a NFL player.

Please God, I hope I'm wrong and he is a monster this year.

If Dan Skuta can play for the Bengals and the 49ers as a perennial backup and do well, I'm confident Joe can be an NFL player.

I've just received a voice mail from the 49ers asking if I'm available for this season. They're a little thin on D, so this may not speak to Joe's ability but rather their scarcity of players.

JK, I love Joe, hope he does get drafted that high.

Max Bullough from Michigan State didn't even get drafted, and he impressed me more than Schmidt (not a slight at Schmidt). It baffles me that anybody would think that Schmidt has the chance to go as high in the draft as Manti did.
