2015 Fall 85-Man Roster

Grace is going to be on the team. He may be in for a 6th year in '16 as well. Not a starter? He was the leading tackler on the season in '13 up until he was injured. And the staff feels he has his full mojo back. that makes him a keeper; unless the comeback has taken a toll that will show up later.

Where is this talk of cutting players? That simply doesn't happen at ND.

I personally think LION is right, and there will be three with transfer and medical hardship, already. Without having to have any kind of conversation.

But if their weren't a real chance, I don't think Chase would have been allowed to suit up for spring at a totally different position. Not with Jones coming in this summer. And I think the coaches really like the job Chase did; he may have blocking and special teams utility being more of a wide-body that the staff feels they need.

So we will see! But I don't think talking about a "cuts" process behooves anyone, or advances the enlightened discussion on this board.

I bet we go into the Texas game with 84 scholarship players.

If we are at 85, it's because a walk-on was awarded a scholarship.

You all are underestimating Notre Dame Attrition.

I completely agree. That's why I didn't mind adding a scholarship long snapper.

For all tense and purposes, that is exactly what is going to happen though. Not SEC-style, underclassmen or recruit cuts. But we have to "cut" our roster to 85 players. We all know that means there is a high likelyhood of some of those "cuts" coming through not offering 5th year options to certain players.

Regarding Grace. Sure, I like the guy too. I think he has loads of potential and i'm sure the staff likes him too. He was having a "nice" '13 before getting injured. That all being said, he didn't play another snap after that, nor any in '14. He is not currently slotted as a starter on this team and we are deep at his position. Grace has been hurt a ton during his career and has no real consistency in production for this team. I wouldn't want him to not return, but if you look at the list of 5th year guys, I am not letting a healthy producer go in lieu of an oft injured, inconsistent player.

I have no effin' idea what will transpire!

I guess it comes down to what Kelly wants. More than one reporter feels Kelly has talked about Graces intangibles like he does kids he makes captain. And remember, Grace was considered uber-talented, and under coached. One big question is whether Kelly would risk the message of withdrawing his support for Grace after he made that Herculean effort to come back to the team.

So it seems to me, that all signs point to the coaching staff knowing some things we don't; and that they have a good handle on it. Not inviting back fifth-years that you invite to spring is just counterproductive for morale, except possibly in the case of Chase.

Given the usual attrition I'd agree that this probably does not become an issue. But I don't see how Carlisle (six starts, 23 catches last year) is some slam-dunk to keep instead of Grace, especially given the emergence of Prosise, plethora of younger receivers and the efforts made by Grace to come back.
Hopefully they're both back, but when healthy, Grace helps our team more, IMO.

Carlisle was off to a real solid year before he got hurt (again unfortunately)

as to the bolded, it sounds like he might still not be full 100% (or may never be again) which is why his name is being thrown around.

Carlisle is the STARTING slot receiver per Brian Kelly. Procise isn't even in the Z receiver depth chart. While he still may find himself in the slot occasionally, BK himself has him as a runningback. If Carlisle left, you would either have to move Procise back or start a true freshman.

How does Grace help our team more when he isn't in the two deep in one of our deepest units? Z receiver (when you consider that Procise is probably only going to line up there occasionally and most of the time with Amir still on the field) is one of our thinnest units. Hell, Sanders will be in the two deep at slot and he's not even on campus.

Finally, per BK, Carlisle has had one of the best springs on the entire team. Grace isn't even all of the way healthy.

Idk, I think the losses of either guy would be on equal footing.

If either guy leaves, you'll be looking at a position that is one injury away from relying on a freshman, who might not be prepared, to provide depth.

If Amir is gone, you have Prosise and Hunter that can play in the slot, and CJ Sanders is one play from being the next man in.

If Grace is gone, the hit is nearly the same, because then you've only got 6 guys with experience for 3 spots at LB (in a base set, obviously). If someone goes down, regardless of who or what alignment they were primarily in, one of the freshmen is going to be called upon to provide depth.

I hope it was auto-correct/spell check that caused you to get that wrong.

Everyone knows the phrase is "For all in tents with porpoises..."

dshans, amirite? :king:

I hate the whole auto-correct thingamajiggy. Never used it, never will. Spell check can be handy in catching typos but is fallible. Proof reading is the way to go.

Not knowing the correct turn of a phrase can pass unsuspected.

Ex: A tough road to hoe and a tough roe to ho would both slide by a spell check. I wouldn't know if they'd be subjected to auto-correct since Ive never used that feature.

Driving by a local chicken joint the other day. Out front their sign says 'try are fried greens'. I'm horrible with spelling and grammar. But even I found it pathetic. It's been that way for 10 days + at this point.

A) Long ago there was a merchant in town who put up clever messages on signs. He was pretty proud of many and once and a while someone stopped in and commented. An old retired businessman stopped in with a '74 Plymouth station wagon and heard a couple of patrons discussing the foot traffic generated by the sign. He listened, and told them that if they really wanted to see foot traffic generated from that sign, to misspell a word. Worked like a charm! 100X increase!!

B) Torii Hunter Jr can play slot. But that is okay. Carslile and Grace are both going to be on the squad this fall barring injury.

Sounds like Cunningham's Law: "the best way to get the right answer on the Internet is not to ask a question, it's to post the wrong answer."

The correct expression is "once in a while".

The chicken joint isn't in the nicest part of town. I'll try to get a pic if I'm in the area. As far as restaurants that put up clever messages, there is one of those just down the road from the same place.

Ironically this seems like the first spring that we didn't lose a player to a year ending issue.

Today O'Malley at Scout made a comment that the scholarship count is 88 right now if you include KVR, Hounshell and Ishaq. Then he commented that getting to 85 shouldn't be a problem and 86 is guaranteed not to be a problem. He also doesn't include Ishaq in his personal roster numbers. He also commented that BK was not caught off guard by Golson leaving.

There's a Mexican restaraunt in my hamlet whose sign says "Specials Oll Day" and has been that way for like 5 years.
