Brent was not redshirted. He is listed in the participation chart on special teams against USC.

Ah. Did he lose a year of eligibility for that? Seems like a waste.
Point is, players evolve and mature. He wasn't at a position last year where he had to immediately contribute (like, say, Trumbetti did). He's got plenty of time left to write his story here and it seems a little early to call him "the next Daniels" or suggest he transfer. And we don't really know what's going on here. As BGIF pointed out, Kelly said far worse things about Michael Floyd and he turned out ok.

The rest of us have to read about those kind of things. Mike heard them in real time.

(Reps Mike, for an author that flew over their heads. Humor is wasted on the young.)

That is because they are none two smart. (In Yiddish, I believe.)

My understanding is that any appearance after game 3 removes the redshirt. Petition to regain it would have to be due to injury. Anyone with more accurate interpretation of the rule, please correct me.

He also played against LSU, Navy, Purdue, Rice, Michigan & Louisville.

The NCAA allows 5 years to play 4 years.

In a Redshirt year a athlete can practice but can NOT play. One play burns a year.

Fans confuse a Hardship Waiver, commonly known as a "Medical Redshirt", with a Redshirt Year. They're different. One deals with a injured athlete, the other with a athlete sitting out by choice.

The Hardship Waiver is for a injured athlete that has played in less than 30% of the team's games and suffers a season-ending injury. The waiver has to be applied for with appropriate medical documentation and is not automatic. The NCAA reviews the circumstances of each case individually.

Brent was on kickoff return all year. I am not sure what was expected of him coming in, but I was shocked that they didnt redshirt him.

I am not worried about his development to this point. He has been there a year. Not about to write a player off in his first year, but there is a lot of talent at WR.

Kelly has definitely had some head scratchers when it comes to RS or not certain players and this is one of them.

Often Kelly does this with insider knowledge, at least that is what I presume. I'm guessing within the first year, he's able to assess how much any player will contribute. He obviously doesn't believe we'll need 5th year seniors in Brent and Holmes. They'll either be good enough to bolt after 4 or they won't have a spot on the roster.

This is what I want to believe.

Most fans don't understand one thing about Coach Kelly, despite the fact that he's said it several times. Coach will play whomever he thinks will win games NOW. He doesn't believe in winning games later. He and the staff apparently saw Brent as a major asset on kicking teams. Anything more than that is probably not in the real world philosophy of Brian Kelly. ... and given the pressure that he's under to win games, and the fact that he REALLY likes to win rather than lose, I can't blame him.

Brent got playing time at WR against Rice, Michigan and Purdue.

I don't worry about playing a freshman and burning his potential for a 5th year. If he's super talented, he may leave early for the NFL. If he's not, he may not be worth offering a 5th year when the time comes.

I think that Brent, Holmes, Watkins, and Okwara are all head scratchers. Chris Brown to some degree, which is definitely debatable. Caught 2 passes but one was the huge 50yd against OK that led to the go ahead TD. If one believes nobody else could have done that then It's worth it. Also Jay Hayes never reached the snap count that Kelly spoke about getting him to for it to be worth it.

I didn't say it was a lot but some. I also didn't say it was a big deal that is having significant ramifications. Above is some head scratchers (even if you take out the two maybes) and warrants what I said, IMO.

Love ya OMM but I fully understand and Nick Watkins didn't even record one tackle last year. His fault or staffs fault who knows but that's not contributing to a victory but it is using 1 year of eligibility.

Didn't Jay Hayes get injured though?

Correct, that's why I said it's a maybe and still doesn't change that there have been "some" without Hayes in the equation. In the decision to take off Hayes's RS Kelly knew that there was very limited time to get the "required" number of snaps. So going into that decision you have to consider things like injury or small bang ups that take more snaps away. Back up against the wall a decision had to be made. He gets the big bucks not I, but I'd be willin to bet he sees it now as a waste, which is what this conversation is about.

Yeah. Though to be fair, in that moment things were pretty grim on the DL.

The only other one that comes to mind is Okwara, of course that was more of a "WTF were you thinking" than a head scratcher.

Kona Schwenke. We could have really used him last year, much moreseo than in the 2010 Utah game.

True, but in 2010, we really had no idea who was going to be a needed RS or not. It was literally a Brian Kelly Wild-West between 2010-2011.

Balki is Right!

This thread has become the epitome of arm-chair, back seat driving, for blind quarterbacks!

I am too tired to do this all, but two things :

Kona Schwenke's year was burned solely because Stephon Tuitt was suspended for a game because of missing class (I believe it was a class.)

Kelly has said that special team experience is important, and matters just as much as playing at a position for a freshman who will play in the future, that comes in with a full depth chart at his position. I think I even have heard Kelly say that red-shirting can be detrimental for players at other positions than those that need tremendous development, (quarterback and line.)

Oh, I know. Just that burning Schwenke in particular always frustrated me. He had turned into a pretty good ballplayer by the 2013 season, and then his time was up. Could well have been a starter last year, certainly a major contributor. And may well have had a better shot at getting drafted, etc.
I could envision Jay Hayes following a similar path.

TAKE THIS FOR A GRAIN OF SALT!!!! I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS MEANS ANYTHING!!!

I just was informed from a source, that last night Justin Brent was working out at a gym off campus. Justin was heard talking about the Florida State game, and "How much better their girls were".

I have no idea if this is anything concrete, and I wasn't even going to say anything about it on here. But now that the GOLSON transfer to FSU is officially announced, I thought I would share this with you fine gentlemen.

Like I said, I DONT know if this means anything, but the last time my source saw an ND player at this gym, it was Gunner Kiel, the week he announced his transfer....
