If Ishaq comes back and stays healthy, everyone's going to love that he did. Just wait.

Agree. BVG's D is much more suited for IW. I was really optimistic about this being his year to show his stuff.

The scary thing is that it could happen again. Jones, Cage ... Bueller? Bueller?

I'd hate to have to burn Mokwuah's RS.

I imagine Rochelle would kick inside before we burned Pete's RS. Utopo has played decent minutes inside as well.

I agree. Rochelle inside, Utupo in his place on early downs or short-yardage downs. It would work ok.

But then if either one of them gets hurt, we are thin at SDE. There's only Blankenship left.

What was worse, this or Ishaq 20 yards deep in pass coverage on a 3rd and long?

LOL I almost forgot about that... Ishaq Williams dropping 20+ yards downfield covering a wide receiver on 3rd & 18(?) against ASU made me lose my sh*t.

Ishaq just never seemed comfortable standing up. We have to bring him back IMO. Can't teach his size and I know the light has never gone on for him but when he was in there I always thought he had good pocket distribution and he is still the one recruit I have always been most excited about since I have followed recruiting, so we have to bring him back. Plus seniors on your football team are just so darn important.

On my Diaco WTF-meter, this was easily an 8/10 for me. Dimeback Ishaq lol.

Wait so other than me there are other posters who never liked Diaco? Some of you just thought he was the second coming of Dic Labeau

Do you guys remember the Diaco thread where we had photos of him at Ishaq house and his face was photoshopped everywhere in it? Thread of the year to bad I think it got taken down. Or it's still in this thread, I am going to look

I liked him. A lot actually. But the tale of the tape leaves me wanting.

Can I asked what you liked?

He coached the most successful D Notre Dame has had since the beginning of the Holtz era... and after the PTSD inducing defensive units that ND has produced recently it was great to see them actually excel on that side of the ball for once. I mean compared to any other DC in the past decade plus there wasn't really a comparison... as far as the talent level (I heard that before) it's not like the players came to ND and played like they did despite him.

It's also not like past DCs were sending out units of 1 and 2 stars out there either...

Have to agree with ACamp. Other than the first 7 games of Willingham, NDs defense was not good since then. It bottomed out with the Tenuta experiment and included a psycho co-coordinator. So Diaco completely righted the ship, got us heading in a good direction among other things. Our last elite lineman prior to Tuitt and Nix was Justin Tuck and Abiramiri. We just did not get those guys under Weis and Willingham.

Bringing the conversation over from the TRANSFER thread.

Discussing Koon's observations of BK's comments today about not knowing Ishaq's situation, and that it's more complicated than KVRs.

I thought all news was fantastic today until I read this...

And Koon is willing to wager vbuckaroos...

You'd think with Ishaq being an EE that he'd have a little more wiggle room - an extra semester's worth of credits. But it's hard to know without any specifics. Would hate to see him get stuck in limbo. He could have gone into the draft.

Ishaaq's natural position was DE, he never was a great fit at LB even in a 3-4. I think if they do find room for him he has a chance to salvage his career. Based on Fall reports last year the light had come on for him and he was ready to do some work. If he's in good shape this Spring/Fall and he gets the academics cleared I think they should bring him back. 5 spots is tight though...and we're possibly talking to transfers coming in. BK made it seem like Ishaaq's transition back to the team is not as easy academically as Russell's.

Among the 5 spots available for 5th years (And that includes the possible transfers) we're obviously taking Nick Martin, I would expect Farley to come back given his sacks and INTs last year. Golson will likely be back, unless he transfers after Spring. I think you have to bring Schmidt back, unless he pays his way again (BK said walk-on's scholarships are for 1 year only unless they're renewed). That leaves 1-3 spots available for other 5th years...and Kelly had good things to say about Grace. It would be nice to have Carlisle back, but the Slot should be filled. I think they'll let Hegarty go. It's going to be tight...

Schmidt was team MVP. How does he not get a ride?

^This.
Also how come Hegarty never gets any love during the 5th year conversation?

Hegarty started 11 games for us last season. I would take him over Carlisle.

Kelly also said were gonna use the time they have before gta be at 85.

Somewhere else they stated on avg. ND loses 4 players an offseason. That balloons that number to 9 spots hypothetically. Much more manageable number.

Me! I remembered getting crucified after the Champs Bowl where Diaco had a poor second half showing against FSU. Since then I never spoke ill of the man because I swear he was family to some on this board.

I was never a fan..."Bend but don't break D" LOL

Gimmie a break.

He had some great talent, including arguably the greatest defensive player in college football history . He wasn't a great D coach.

I would take Hegarty over Martin. To be honest, I think Nick gets a lot of love because of the quality of player his brother was/is.

lolwut? Te'o was the most decorated defensive player in CFB history, but he was nowhere close the GOAT.

Martin is the best C we have. Hegarty, who only made the starting line-up because Martin injured his hand and couldn't snap effectively, was our worst OL by a pretty significant margin last year.
