Shumate got the same treatment, so I assume this is Kelly's attempt to motivate a couple of lazy stars.

Outside looking in WTF. But I'm not a coach so I have to go with what they are doing.

Despite the gameday whiners complaining last week about ND players quitting during the game, isn't Max the only player that was called out by the announcers this seasson for giving up on a play (ASU)?

Could it be that Max needs to be all that he can be to be set free?

Yeah, this is on Max and not BK. IMO, BK used the NW game to teach a lesson (guessing they could win w/o him). Obviously, the lesson didn't take, or Max would not be "5th".

Starting a safety the is only about 80 % is trouble. Especially since our run defense has been rough up the middle.

Here's a look at the coaching staff meeting this week... explains a lot about the BK's logic that went into this depth chart:

After coaching youth football this year I completely understand benching a kid if he's being a prima donna and half assing it. If that's the case then good for Kelly. The last thing any team needs is a sense of entitlement among the players, particularly those who have been a bit suspect in terms of their execution.

He half assed it for one play. And BK hasn't even said that's the reason for this. Let's not start assuming Max is a slouch. Easily could be the staff just making bad decisions on defense. Would that really be surprising?

There is nothing anyone can say to convince me that Redfield isn't the single best option at safety of all the guys.

So you're there at every practice and in team meetings?

Notre Dame made a move on the back end against Northwestern, sitting Max Redfield and Elijah Shumate in favor of Austin Collinsworth and Drue Tranquill. That pair, along with Elijah Shumate, had Notre Dame’s worst coverage game of the season. That was against one of the lesser passing teams on the schedule as well. How that unit performs against Louisville’s more talented receiving corps is going to be interesting…and a bit scary heading into the game. Pulling your best athlete (Redfield) against one of the more athletic receiving corps (Louisville) is also a bit concerning going into this game as well

I just don't get Kelly's line of thinking on this. Even Driskell points out the obvious in the above quotes.

No and neither are you or anyone else on this board. So until we are told he is on the bench because of some disciplinary issue, I'm going to assume its a football decision. A bad football decision.

So the entire ND coaching staff owes you an explanation and they should openly air dirty laundry to make a portion of the fan base feel better? That's a good way to run a team. Lol. Either way it's a "football" decision. I'm just more apt to trust the adults in the room. That's just me though.

Yeah it is probably is just you. He played last game so I'm not sure what someone could have done to earn the "you're going to play a bit here and there when I feel like playing you despite your replacements stinking it up" punishment.

That's the point. Nobody knows but the staff and the players. So, if you think Kelly and VanGorder are such unprofessional and complete dolts as to bench a kind on a whim then that's fine. That means this program has bigger problems than anyone could imagine and Kelly might as well be fired. Somehow I doubt that is the case. So with that in mind I'm guessing Redfield must have done/said something really stupid and or has a really shitty attitude. Or... Kelly could be betting against ND and is intentionally shaving points/ sabotaging the team.

No one knows what goes on behind the scenes or in practice, but everyone knows Tranquill was terrible last week. I hate to beat up on a kid who was put in a position he was unprepared for, but he was awful. Starting him over Redfield again is an objectively God awful decision. I am not trying to pile on BK, however one of his worst flaws imo is stubborness and being unwilling to admit mistakes. Starting Tranquill last week was a mistake and doing so again this week is inexcusable. Any coach should no better there is no justification for doing so, if Redfield had done something to deserve to be suspended then suspend him, otherwise no reason for Tranquill to play. This is an awful coaching decision and anyone who stands behind BK on this is an apologist imo.
