What's going on with Big Lou tonight? He just posted two tweets:

[EDIT] The plane crash maybe? I'm behind on news here.

More likely something personal.

I'm with you on the plane crash. "When you hear news worse than ... " I suspect he's putting yesterday into perspective. If anyone hasn't seen a photo of that burnt out, tailless , engineless plane that belly landed you need to. Then realize there are only 2 fatalities and 305 survivors. It looks like only 2 of the 8 chutes deployed but the flight attendants got everyone, including 180 injured, off the plane. The 2 fatalities were found on the runway apparently thrown from the open end of the fuselage where the tail section should have been.

Let's hope that it's no MORE personal than that. The Big Man has a big soul. We owe Big Lou more than almost anyone for the good times of the last seasons and the trajectory into the future, other than Coach.

Blessings and strength to you, happy warrior, whatever this is.

Nothing earth shattering, still a nice little story.

Louis Nix Weightlifting At Sam’s Club | Notre Dame Football Blog

I received the following story through correspondence from a member of the Athletics Media Relations staff at Notre Dame.

Glen Forshee just went to buy a pool at Sam’s Club for his grandkids party, he never expected what happened next…

EMAIL FROM GLEN FORSHEE

I went over to Mishawaka’s Sam’s Club to help my sister load up a swimming pool she was buying for the grandkids birthday. The thing weighed over 200 pounds and Sam’s Club was dragging their feet to get someone to help load it. Lucky for us Louis Nix the star defensive lineman for Notre Dame was leaving the store and when I asked him to help carry it he graciously agreed and threw it in the back like it was a air mattress. I hope my Bears get a chance to draft him after this year!

Goodness...I wonder how accurate that is. Hasn't it also been said that coming out of this summer he's in the best shape that he's been in since he's been at ND? If all of this is true, he has the potential to exceed the huge expectations put on him already.

Watching the superbig "War Daddies" of the past for years now, and hearing the inside-the-locker-room stuff from my brothers, 357 seems completely believable for Lou to me. I'm not concerned for him at 357 [playing wise]. Our football concern is that he doesn't "drift higher" during the season. Big Lou could challenge for Fridge status if he doesn't watch it.

As Dan Hampton said about Perry when he reported to Chicago Bears camp: "That guy is just a biscuit short of 400."

At least 50 lbs of that has to be personality alone.

@eTruth_Irish: #NotreDame NG Louis Nix says he watches tape of the national championship game three times a week. "I don't want that to happen again."

Nice to see that he is driven. The NC game failure had very little to do with him though. The days of losing to Syracuse are no longer accepted.

I do not think Louis Nix's playing weight will be an issue. Louis Nix could have left Notre Dame and gone to the NFL and made a lot of money right away. Louis Nix's returning to Notre Dame shows that he is convinced Notre Dame has great coaches who will develop his ability to the fullest and push him hard to be the best he can be and when he becomes a multi-millionaire NFL player he will be fully prepared for a long and very profitable NFL career..

NFL teams aren't letting big time nose tackles drop anymore. Nix is going to be a top 10 pick for sure, and top 5 is likely. I love Te'o and Tuitt and Justin Tuck and all of those guys, but Nix is the best defensive player we've had in the last decade or so. The team that grabs him gets an All-Pro for a decade at nose tackle.

I've put in some thought to what's more valuable/rare, an elite 2-gapper DE that is also an elite pass rusher (Tuitt), or a nose tackle that can be a constant backfield presence. I lean more toward the nose tackle in this case, even with a lot of teams prioritizing edge rushers. Nix is the next Vince Wilfork IMO.

The worst part is that Oklahoma's center did.... You know, the guy Lou manhandled all game last year.

to be fair, OU's center knows it...

Gabe Ikard ‏@GabeIkard 17 Aug

@ChiTribHamilton @NDsidBertschy @NDatRivals No doubt that @1IrishChocolate is the best NG in the country.

As for Nix and his talent relative to other defensive players: He's a stud, no doubt. If he can stay healthy he'll have a long and fruitful NFL career. But I don't know that one can equate draft predictions with "best" player for us though. A lot of that comes down to what NFL teams value (War daddy nose tackles, yes. Middle linebackers? Not so much.) Also, this time last year Te'o was a top 10-15 pick. And then he went and had a season worthy of coming in second in the Heisman voting. And still...

God I hope my Eagles draft him. 49ers fans idk how your Defense was so good last year. Isaac Sopoaga may be the worst starting NG in the league.

I love Big Lou but I have to disagree here. Probably the best NFL prospect we've had on D in a decade, but best player is a different animal. Te'o is the most decorated defensive player (and, for that matter, player on either side of the ball) in the history of college football, and I don't think you can put Nix above him at this point.

not to diminish anything that Te'o did, because he is everything we all say he is, but I think even Te'o would agree that Louis Nix played a large (no pun intended) part in allowing Te'o to do what he was able to do. NG's, and even more so great NG's, are almost always unsung heroes, they get doubled-team pretty much on every single play(and sometimes chipped by a RB/FB). there are not any stats for occupying blockers and disrupting blocking schemes, but both of those are crucial to any defensive strategy. If your NG can be controlled by one blocker, your defense will suffer.

If your an effective NG, that means you have the same wallet that Jules from Pulp Fiction has.
