Isn't Utopu also a fifth year? He was one I was a little surprised got asked back but has provided nice depth up front.
As for next year, this 85 scholarships thing is a nice problem to have. But we'll have a couple of never-gonna-play-here transfers - we always do come spring - probably a couple of medicals (Is Hounshell done after this year?), the inevitable flunk-out/cheat/back-home babymama and probably something as random as Will Mahone losing his shit in a cop car. It'll be fine.

Ahh right. Utupo. Knew I was forgetting someone.

I'm 100% behind DD returning. All these guys will get asked back for sure, unless there are lingering injury issues. You simply don't turn down starters for 5th year spots, unless they are not good. Williams is awesome for depth/rotation purposes.

QB Golson
OL Martin
LB Schmidt
DE Williams
CB Farley
WR Carlisle (only kind of a 5th year)
OL Hegarty

Barring some huge unforeseen offseason catastrophe (LOL!!!!!), this team is going to be sick next year.

DD likely means one of ESB or AJ are out. You need to take 1 RB, 1 DB, and you have a tough decision to make with the receiver.

Farley has another year? Good Lord, it feels like he's been 3 steps behind for the past decade.

Agree, nothing to worry about. It always works itself out one way or another, but it's nice to finally be in a position where people are worried about losing someone and it shouldn't have a big impact.

First world problems. It's so nice to worry about these things. 4 years ago, wouldn't have thunk. BK doing a fantastic job along with all the other assistants.

Haha, there is always that one guy that it seems like they have been at school forever. If he keeps building on the solid year that he is having, I hope he does come back. Could possibly even be a Captain next year.

From the ISD thread:

- There is a real possibility of DD returning to ND next season. He is looking over all possibilities to include the NFL and DIAA and DII. His family is supporting whichever he decides.

- His family was upset at the investigation because of how long it took, not necessarily the punishment. They also voiced concerned over the lack of contact by ND but understand its because of federal laws and not ND.

- DD has met with BK recently although it wasn't revealed as to what about.

Couldn't DD avoid transfer restrictions to a DI school by simply paying his own tuition? I could be wrong, but I think it's fair to assume his father could swing a tuition bill if he wants another year of college ball to prepare for the NFL.

I'm with you insofar as I'll be celebrating when we field a team of 85 against our first opponent in September, but I doubt ND is ready to oversign (even modestly). Take a look at the list of tier-1 5Y candidates from this OFD article:

And that doesn't include Daniels. I'd say this list is in descending order of 2015 importance. Assuming DD returns, we are already going to have to ask Hanratty to walk. Jamabo and Aliz'e (or a DB) would take Hegarty's and Carlisle's spots (both starters this year, which has never happened before). Beyond that, I have a really hard time seeing the staff replacing Farley with a freshman.

The kid has a ton of experience, both at S and NB, and he's played very well for us this year. Since Safety is one of our two biggest needs heading into next season, we can't afford to lose him. Which means we aren't going to sign another freshman that might force him out.

I don't think we can assume DD returns, as I'm almost certain Kelly and co. aren't. You can't bank on a player to return from suspension, especially since Daniels has already been suspended twice already.

IMO, it'd be a terrible decision for DD to pass up coming back to finish his degree and improve his draft stock if that is an option.

Shoot for the NFL and be a high round/undrafted WR with no degree to show for it? Or return to get a Notre Dame degree, play on a likely top 5 team, and improve your draft stock?

It's honestly a no-brainer.

We can argue about whether his draft stock is higher or or after returning, but he's essentially saying 1 year's nfl salary is more valuable than a ND degree if he chooses not to try to come back.

I don't want to start a big debate, but I have no problem with Phillip Daniels or his tweets. He's never said anything THAT bad considering his son and teammates were dragged through the coals with the process. He has every right to be upset with how long ND took to handle this IMO. Plus he'sstill pro-Irish, even after his son getting the boot for the year.

If someone did that to Chipper and held him out of cutest dog contests, I would not have handled it as well as Phillip did.

Screw social media. Screw "perception." Do the right fucking thing, quietly, move on, let the chips fall where they may and continue to work toward the best. Both off and on the field.

I have no inside information or worthwhile insight into the situation. If there is a travesty involved, fight like hell. If there is any semblance of truth in the allegation(s), suck it up and strive to correct the situation, both interior and exterior.

I do not have a problem with Phillip Daniels but when you broadcast every thought you have to the world you invite criticism. I get why people are tired of him.

It actually might have been nice to have DD move on and lose the baggage his father brings in the process. If he does come back we get one more season with Philip Daniels commenting anytime his son comes off the field.

Ihear ya...I just think anytime DD is on the field we have a better chance to win. More DD.

First off Phillip Daniels is a huge doosher. He has handled everything about Davaris in the last two months completely the wrong way. If I was Davaris I would tell my dad to shut the fuck up.

Brian Kelly will have to tell DD to cut the shit if he wants to come back. Sampson pointed out the other day that as talented is Davaris is he's just different and doesn't really fit what Kelly likes. But I think Kelly would bring him back, he's not a bad kid he just doesn't always do things the correct way. I think you can see it starts with Pops

What If this is some kind of test the water situation? DD may have been reading more than we expected, and If he or ole' Pop's were reading, they may not feel all warm and fuzzy about the possibility. If this were me or my child I too would wonder how the fan's would react to an "I'm coming back' type of announcement.

I'd be quite surprised if it's anything that sophisticated. KVR probably jumped the gun posting about a conversation he'd had with DD. Lord only knows what DD does/doesn't tell his dad. Or even if DD is actually welcome to return (I mean, that's not a given, is it?)

If we're going to read tea leaves, I'd note that DD's Twitter photo is back to him being in a Notre Dame football uniform, which it wasn't a week or two ago after the suspensions were announced.

Either way, I'd expect he and Kelly have a long serious talk before Daniels gets his spot back on this team. He's a talented ballplayer, but not so much that he doesn't need to clean up his act.

The tier is ordered by importance to the team, FWIW.

I also wouldn't call offensive linemen who have started and/or are currently starting as completely expendable.

They aren't as important to the team as Golson. Both can't even win a starting job outright on a pretty mediocre line this year, while the other one might end up being a Heisman finalist.

If a high school recruit (high 4 star maybe potential 5 star talent) had two major issues in high school where he was suspended from the team for a full season and an off season would we even think about recruiting him? I think that type of recruit would fit into the "don't want" "head case" category as far as ND football recruiting is concerned.

Why would it be any different in granting DaVaris Daniels a 5th year? I'd imagine he would have to do ALOT to impress Coach Kelly that he isn't simply gonna mess up again and waste another scholly. Not to mention Kelly has to feel pretty confident with the receivers we have at the moment (I mean one of them is doing so well he is dating a porn star!)

I don't really know a lot of the facts as far as his 2 academic suspensions are concerned though so I could be completely off base.

If we were looking at a high school recruit (high 4 star maybe 5 star) and he had shown really great potential on the field, but had on two separate occasions been suspended for a full semester, would we be interested in him as a recruit? I think we would all kind of see a kid like that as a head case/kid that is not worth the time or really capable/worthy of playing at Notre Dame.

I'd imagine Davaris would have to be really convincing to persuade Coach Kelly to offer him a 5th year scholarship (because in reality that is what he would be doing right?) Not to mention I think Brian Kelly has to be pretty happy with the Wide Receivers he does have at the moment (I mean one is doing so well he is dating a porn star!)

I hope DaVaris can pull his act together and everyone deserves a second chance, but a third seems like a stretch. If he wants an ND degree, that is great and I think the University has already welcomed him back, but I don't think he has done anything to earn worthy of a scholarship.
