I honestly can't see an interior OL of Magnuson, Glasgow and Kalis gouging us up the middle, even with Schmidt at MLB. UM's OL was hot trash last year, and those guys got a lot of snaps. Are we to believe that they've suddenly become competent after losing Lewan and Schofield? Nothing they showed against App. State frightened me either.

Completely agree. I think it's fair to assume Day will be disruptive the entire game. He's psychical and quick off the ball. If Jarron is fresh he plays at a high level. I think that could be the key if Michigan wants to pound the ball. If Cage can play well enough to keep Jarron fresh, I think we could easily control the middle of the field.

I mentioned it in a prior post, but I think WDE is the target. Whether it's Trumbetti or Okwara, that's where I'd try to establish a power run game. Not only are you hitting the smallest part of the defensive line, but you're running at Jaylon which eliminates his ability to use his speed and pursue. I'll take Jaylon and Trumbetti against these tackles too. Maybe I'm being a homer, but if we do a better job of tackling this year, I don't see them running the ball effectively enough to beat us. I hate them.

Is David F. a Notre Dame guy??

He's Irish and was on the sidelines for the ND/Navy game in Dublin. He's also having Lou on his show next week, so I'm sure this will help promote that. He'll definitely get the crowd pumped up, he's awesome.

Jaylon will surely play a major role in the blitzing schemes this week as it wasn't necessary to fire that weapon against Rice.. Also looking forward to seeing Tranquill our there flying around.. He was a pleasant surprise.

I am telling you, smart money is that Cole gets moved to left guard.

Eventually, or against us? Because every UM source I've read indicates that Cole - Magnuson - Glasgow - Kalis - Braden is all but a sure thing on Saturday.

I'm hoping this is us after the game:

If you go back and read, especially around Hoke's mind meld of a brain dump, press conference. He may have come out and said it. If he didn't, he said there would be a "special plan that was a good one" for the offensive line. I still know a guy from the old tech days that still works in AA and comes and goes on the UofM campus from time to time. He swears LG for Cole. Others have hinted at something similar. Might be bs, but it makes sense that they might try that. They have to be waking up in cold sweats over their o-line play!

Notre Dame-Ohio State series shows Irish don't see Michigan as a big-time program | The Detroit News

Not on their level
“Obviously Ohio State and Notre Dame do not like Michigan," said former Michigan running back Stan Edwards, whose son Braylon also starred as a receiver for the Wolverines. “There is nothing at Michigan that Ohio State wants. There is nothing about Michigan that Notre Dame wants. They feel pretty good about where they are and what they are to college football, and that has nothing to do with where Michigan is now.

“National pundits are beginning to look at Michigan as a regional program. They don't respect Michigan. They (Ohio State and Notre Dame) not only don't respect them, but they kind of don't like them. So that might be one way of them saying, ‘We don't need you.’"

This is more than a business deal. This is personal. Ohio State is not just another school. It is Michigan’s chief rival. Buckeyes hate Wolverines so much that every Big Ten flag flies in its stadium except Michigan’s. Even Notre Dame has a flag in the stadium.

Hoke won’t even use the term “Ohio State.” He calls it “Ohio.” It might be time for the coach to come up with a new name for Notre Dame.

“That does kick a little sand in your face,” Huckleby said. “That is a little dig. They announced it right before the game.”

Already preparing a locked from the outside, padded cell for Saturday night if ND loses. My blood is f-ucking boiling and the game hasn't even been played yet.

SCORCHED EARTH is the only way to describe what may happen with a loss.

Notre Dame is sending another message to Michigan: The Wolverines’ program isn’t on the level it used to be. The Fighting Irish needs a big-time, nationally-televised game that will earn money and help it reach the national championship semifinals.

Michigan no longer matches up. Ohio State does.

Who am I to argue with The Detroit News?

Tin-foil hat stuff from the Detroit News.

This was only your 17th post in 8 years?

For those too lazy to follow the link, here's a lazy write-up by Scout:

Michigan (1-0) at Notre Dame (1-0) Sept. 6, 7:30, NBC

Here's The Deal: Michigan and Notre Dame will play again and the series will someday become special again. It might not happen for years, but there’s too much history and there’s too much greatness for the two historic programs to not square off in early September on a regular basis. But for now, this is the end of the series until further notice, and for two programs looking for definition and direction, this could be one of those games that makes or breaks an entire season.

Notre Dame continues to operate with an academic Sword of Damocles hanging over its head, waiting daily to see just what might happen next in the program’s latest controversy. Meanwhile, all was right with the world on the field as Everett Golson came up with a brilliant performance in the 48-17 domination of defending Conference USA champion, Rice. The offense was thrilling and explosive, and the defense solid when it had to be to get the easy win. The big boys are down the road with Stanford, Florida State, Arizona State and USC just a few of the big names left to deal with, and while this might be a good Irish team, considering the potential for most academic casualties, getting big wins now is a must.

Getting any wins at all is a big positive for Brady Hoke, whose Wolverines came up with a cathartic 52-14 blasting of an Appalachian State team that’s nowhere near the version that pulled off the classic upset to kick off the 2007 season. Even so, for an offense that couldn’t run the ball last year, cranking out 350 yards was a big step forward. For a defense that couldn’t seem to come up with a tough stop, not allowing a point until midway through the third quarter and up 42 was a plus. With home games against Miami University, Utah and Minnesota up next, a win over the Irish probably means a 5-0 start before going to Rutgers. It would also be the first really, really big win for Hoke since beating the Irish last year.

So wake up the leaders and hail, hail to the echoes, or something like that, and enjoy a truly great college football matchup. It should be good enough to show why the series has to continue – and soon.

Why Michigan Might Win: Maybe, just maybe, the offense has figured it out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was just Appalachian State, but the running game worked, the passing game was efficient, and the points and yards were flying off the board early. The Wolverine attack clicked twice last year in explosions against Indiana and Ohio State, but those were helped by mega-passing days. Against ASU, the commitment to the ground game was obvious, with the 350 yards the most by the Wolverines since cranking out 353 against Illinois in the middle of the 2012 season. As good as the Irish defensive front was against Rice, it’s still going to be a work in progress throughout the first part of the season. If Michigan was really able to revamp its O line in a hurry and the ground game is for real under new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, there might be too much firepower for an Irish team missing its top receiver (DaVaris Daniels) and top corner (KeiVarae Russell).

Why Notre Dame Might Win: But it was Appalachian State. Michigan’s offense had its moments of pop and excitement throughout last year, but there always seemed to be a clunker right around the corner. Is the Michigan offensive line really ready to shine in a big game, and will the holes be there at times for the Derrick Green, De’Veon Smith and the ground game like they were against ASU? Rice might not be special, but the offense failed to generate anything against a swarming Notre Dame defense that allowed a few big plays here and there late, but couldn’t find room on the ground. On the other side, the veteran Irish O line – potentially a major strength as the season goes on – should be able to generate a push. Notre Dame isn’t going to averaged 6.7 yards per carry like it did last week, but it should get more electric plays out of …

Who To Watch Out For: Everett Golson, who more than picked up where he left off in 2012, when he was the only positive in the ugly national title loss to Alabama. He completed 12-of-22 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns against Rice, and ran 12 times for 41 yards and three touchdowns. Can he exorcise the demons of 2012, when he completed 3-of-8 passes for 30 yards and two picks against the Wolverines? He needs to. On the other side, Devin Gardner took target practice against Appalachian State, completing 13-of-14 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns – with all the scoring passes going to tight end/receiver Devin Funchess. Fantastic in last year’s win over the Irish, Gardner threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns while running for 82 yards and a score, but if the running game works like it did against ASU, he won’t need to carry the team this time around.

What’s Going To Happen: It’s going to be a classic thanks to the two quarterbacks. Golson will carry the Irish on his back, but it won’t be enough as the Michigan offense will look the part, only against a good defense this week. The Devin Gardner Heisman discussion will start up, but he’ll only be one part of a terrific end to the legendary rivalry.
Prediction: Michigan 34 … Notre Dame 31

Really top notch analysis there, Scout.

I have yet to hear a single 'expert' anywhere pick ND to win... ESPN or otherwise.

Yeah, I hope they continue to pick against us. I'm not sure why, but a lot of sites I've seen think Michigan will handle us just fine. Considering Rice was a 10 win team a year ago and Michigan played a FCS team almost even in comparison, I'm not sure why people think Michigan is going to lock this down. It's going to be a game, and I hope we come in with a chip on our shoulder...although the news released today that we scheduled OSU could be fuel for their fire.

I feel like ND has all the "fuel to their fire" that they need.

-Home game at night
-Last game in the near future against a very much hated rival
-They beat us last year
-The "experts" are picking against them
-It's damn Michigan

If Notre Dame doesn't come out with a chip on their shoulder, I'll be very surprised and disappointed. You can't lose this game, plain and simple.

At some point, every normal man must be tempted to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

If we don't hold to that quote on Saturday from top to bottom, then everyone invested in this game (coaches, players, students, fans) can sit down, shut the f-uck up, and accept the fact we are all toothless tigers.

I think it's easy for the experts to roll with UM bc frankly, fair or not, UM is viewed as a tougher program by many... when you have these close matchups the program with more perceived toughness gets the nod 9/10... I think ND’s recent history of flat out collapsing against UM certainly works against them as well in the court of ‘expert opinion’.

Yeah, I think this is influencing a lot of people. Both teams have big question marks, in the eyes of casual observers, based on some big changes from last year, so our recent record against UM may carry some weight, just to the extent that these observers don't have enough data to evaluate the performance of the actual 2014 teams or many of the key players on them, and are having to look to other predictors.
