Notre Dame QB recruit Blake Barnett shines - South Bend Tribune: Recruiting

Even spare throwing opportunities are turning into MVP awards for Blake Barnett.
On Sunday, Notre Dame’s 2015 quarterback commit took part in the Oakland Nike Football Training Camp with little to gain besides extra work.
He already earned an invite to July’s The Opening and Elite 11 Finals with his Los Angeles Elite 11 performance in January. He has all the exposure he needs with a commitment to Notre Dame and programs like Oregon and Alabama still pushing for him.
But Barnett didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get better and continue to prove himself worthy of all the acclaim.
"I just wanted to go out there and compete,” Barnett said. “I knew that a lot of the top quarterbacks in Southern California and even Northern California were going to be out there. It's nice to go out there and get some work in and be able to throw with these guys.”
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Barnett left with camp MVP honors and rave reviews about his play. Greg Biggins, national recruiting analyst for Scout.com, attended the camp and saw Barnett throw for what he estimates as the eighth or ninth time since the beginning of his junior season. Biggins doesn’t recall seeing Barnett throw better than he did on Sunday.
“The ball comes out of his hand really clean,” Biggins said. “It's a tight ball every time. He has a really live arm. He was throwing deep balls accurately. Everything was just on point from his drops to his accuracy. He owns all the deep throws, the intermediate throws, the short stuff. He was throwing with touch when he needed to. He was really good.”
Biggins remembers Barnett’s throwing motion being long and inconsistent in the past. Now, he says, Barnett has found a consistent release point and improved his motion to be quicker and tighter. And all the improvements shown on Sunday don’t include his ability to make plays on his feet and run by defenders in the open field. In a camp setting, he has to be a pocket-passer.
“You knew he made some strides pretty quickly, but the fact that it's happening even faster than I thought it would it shows how good he's going to be two or three years from now,” Biggins said. “If anyone wants to say he has the highest ceiling of any of the quarterbacks in this year's class, I don't think you can argue with that at all.”
In addition to working on his own game, the camp gave Barnett an opportunity to scout other prospects the Irish are evaluating. One wide receiver in particular, Trent Irwin, worked well in tandem with Barnett. The 6-2, 190-pound prospect from Newhall, Calif., does not hold a Notre Dame offer but received a visit from the coaching staff this spring. Irwin, a four-star prospect, also earned an invite to The Opening.
“He's a stud,” Barnett said. “He's a really good athlete. He runs clean routes and he catches the ball.”
On Monday, Barnett received a bump in his Rival ranking, up nine spots to No. 55 overall in the 2015 class and the No. 5 quarterback. He’s the only Irish commit to make the Rivals Top 100.
More camps await for Barnett this offseason. In June, he’ll travel to Baltimore for the Rivals Five-Star Challenge and South Bend for the Irish Invasion summer camp. In July, he’ll compete in The Opening and Elite 11 Finals. It’s all a part of a process of improvement for Barnett.
"It's great to get coached up by some of the top quarterback coaches from around the nation and getting to meet different ones for the Elite 11 as the process goes on,” Barnett said.
More 2016 offers
Another pair of prospects reported Notre Dame offers last week.
DE/TE Joseph Jackson, 6-4, 229; Miami Gulliver Prep: A four-star prospect, Jackson received an offer from Notre Dame on Tuesday. Jackson also holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State and Alabama. 247Sports slates Jackson as the No. 14 strongside defensive end in the 2016 class and No. 238 overall.
DB Deontay Anderson, 6-1, 192; Manvel (Texas) High: A four-star prospect, Anderson received an offer from Notre Dame on Thursday. Auburn, Texas, UCLA and Michigan State also offered Anderson this month. 247Sports slates Anderson as the No. 2 safety in the 2016 class and No. 23 overall.

I am starting to get getting echoes of Jaylon Smith. Everyone wants him. NO thanks, he commits early and gets to work bringing other great student-athletes to Notre Dame. He does not need the fake adulation, bullshit and ass-kissing from recruiters blowing smoke up his ass.

He is going to Notre Dame. He knows that he will have to ACTUALLY, yes actually really, and yes actually - study - and be a STUDENT and work to get a meaningful college degree that will set him up for the rest of his life.

I thought the same thing. Good post. We're sitting so damn strong at the qb position for the next several seasons.

Is it too soon for 'Notre Dame Man'?

lets just make sure that loi is signed and makes it to fall camp...stranger things have happened..i know he is an ee but again let's just wait to make sure he makes it to the fall camp...NOT doubting he won't for any reason...just an insurance policy

Blake Barnett Continues Climb In National Rankings

Corona (Calif.) Santiago four-star quarterback and Notre Dame commit Blake Barnett continues to rise in the 247Sports national rankings.

Barnett is now the No. 4-ranked dual-threat QB in the country according to 247Sports.

The 6-4, 195-pounder really started hitting the recruiting scene around September of last year. He attended camps at San Diego State, San Jose State and UCLA, and started picking up national attention at the end of the summer. On Sept. 19, Barnett was rated an 88 by 247Sports and shortly after that he picked up his first offer from UCLA.

On Oct. 19, however, Barnett visited Notre Dame when the Irish took on USC and he picked up an offer that would drastically change his recruitment. Upon receiving the Notre Dame offer, Barnett added offers from Colorado, Duke, California, West Virginia. Shortly after that, his 247Sports rating improved to a 90. The national media was starting to realize that Barnett had big-time potential.

Those offers, although impressive, weren't enough to keep him from pledging to the Irish on Nov. 24 while he was on campus in South Bend. Barnett ended his recruitment and said, "It felt like home for me and it’s a place that felt ideal for my situation."

Barnett continued to workout during the winter months and people continued to take notice. He no longer looked like the kid with upside and he started looking like one of the nation's best 2015 signal-callers. On Feb. 18, 247Sports gave Barnett a 94 overall rating, two days after he added an offer from Alabama.

On March 8, Nike held a football camp in Los Angeles and Barnett was on hand to participate. The Notre Dame commit put on a show and word must have spread fast because Oregon offered that same day.Two weeks later, 247Sports bumped his rating up to a 95, which was a vast improvement from his 88 overall rating six months prior.

Barnett has continued his climb over the past few months and has been tremendous at every camp stop that he has participated in. On March 28, he earned an invite to the Elite 11 and Nike's "The Opening", an all-star summer camp that takes place from July 5 to July 10 in Beaverton, Ore.

On May 22, 247Sports updated the national rankings and Barnett moved up again. He now holds a 96 overall rating, is the No. 76 overall recruit in the 2015 class, the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback nationally and the No. 13 player in California.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Barnett is the No. 65 overall prospect in the country, the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the land and the No. 10 recruit in California.

In a preview of Oregon's QB board, Hopkins mentioned of course how they still talk to Barnett but he isn't wavering (not news). What I thought was of note was that according to Hopkins, Oregon views Barnett as the #1 QB in the nation

Lots of teams do. ND/Oregon would see him as the #1 QB in the country. Stanford/Usc wouldnt bc he doesnt fit their specific system. All in the eye of the beholder

Interesting about Golson's accuracy. Hard to judge it based on his RS Frosh year IMO. I posted this early in 2013 before Golson was suspended, but the progression he made over the 2nd half of the 2012 season was very noticeable:

I wanted to put this statistic in its own thread, because I didn't know what else to do with it.

Everyone talked about how Golson's play drastically improved from the Oklahoma game on last year. I took his numbers from Oklahoma-Alabama and averaged them out. If he put up those numbers for a full 13 game schedule (which I think most people on here think he will at the minimum), here would be his numbers:

3,114 passing yards. 17 TDs and 6 INTs completing 59%

470 rushing yards. 9 rushing TDs.

Considering the fact that he should have drastically improved his game since the end of last year, he should be putting those numbers up this year at the absolute worst. I don't think it would be out of the question for him to throw 3500+ with 500+ rushing and completing over 60%.

I don't want to make this about Golson, but figured we see these conversations start at some point. I hope his time away has improved his accuracy, but I'm also very happy we have a confident and competent back up in MZ. I do believe we will see both.

BB, if he continues to improve and rise up the rankings will certainly bring stability to the QB situation. I will also bring a bunch of debate and noise. DK may be in curious position next year when BB comes in, EG and MZ are likely 1-2.

Truly hope EG kills it this year, and we see MZ kill it in mop up time.

Golson had awful deep ball accuracy in his first year. Was also poor at "touch" passes. That all is obvious from film and not very debatable. When throwing the fastball on intermediate and short routes he was great though.

One of the more underrated things for this year is if he keeps missing people deep or if his long ball has improved. I'm betting it has. I think it's guaranteed that his touch/finesse throws will be substantially better.

58% is accurate? In our biggest games that year Everett completetion % was

MSU- 43%
Michigan- 37%
Stanford- 50%
Miami- 77%
Oklahoma- 52%
USC- 57%
Alabama- 58%

Miami defense was awful so basically it's news to this guy if he is accurate

Thanks man, glad to see I am not alone here. Just be careful for what you say about Everett man

No prob. Glad you came with some cold hard facts. BTW, I think EV is the real deal, just needs to develop.

EG never struck me as overly accurate either... always felt like that was something that needed improving... but hey, Tony Rice was one of the worst passers I have ever seen... just win games.

Couldn't agree with you more man, just needs to prove it. He's not even close to scratching his surface. But he also isn't close to being "great" or "good". Ya he led our team to a title but it was very average. But down the stretch he was a different QB then he was the first 6 games. So with the year off from playing football I really don't know what to expect out of him this year.

I believe that is what they call completion percentage? Jimmy Clausen was probably the most "accurate" QB in the history of Notre Dame Football and he has a completion percentage of 56% his freshman year. I wouldnt say he was inaccurate as a freshman.

LAX - yes Golson didnt have the greatest deep ball but look who he was throwing too....Robby Toma, John Goodman, and first year player Davaris Daniels? He would have completed more deep passes to Chris Brown if Brown wasnt forced out there. (Brown was far from ready for division 1 football as a freshman) The fact that Brown had to play as a freshman shows the lack of a deep threat. I wouldnt put that on Golson completely.

So if the argument is can his completion % go up and would I like it to go up? Hell yes. But I dont believe thats a great indicator of accuracy. Aaron Murray has SEC passing records against the best defenses in the country and had a career % of 64%, yet is praised for his accuracy?
