I agree with all of this with a small caveat. Why would anyone tell a reporter such a thing and expect it not to be reported? It's not like it an off the record piece of information that can add context to another story. If he didn't want the information to be reported, Crawford shouldn't have told a reporter ... which leads me to believe that he wasn't trying to keep this information quiet. Maybe Crawford was just testing the waters to see what would happen when Michigan Head Coach Matt Foley found out he was taking visits. Who knows.

I 100% agree with you. Unless Loy is a super shady dude and doesn't help these kids understand what "on record" and "off record" info is, which I doubt, then I don't see anything wrong with him reporting the info.

If anything, he should be criticized for saying it was a "secret visitor" rather than just naming him outright from the beginning.

So basically Crawford got $2,500 not to come on this visit, yet we want to blame Loy?

This makes the most sense of any of it.

We should put out a book for high school recruits :

Start a rumor you are going to visit another school;

Make sure the press gets wind, then when the coaches call in alarm;

Take $2,500 for not going.

This explains some recruiting craziness.

I am confused why you guys are all so quick to blame Loy. Crawford should not have told Loy in the first place even if he wanted it to be kept on the down low.

FWIW, I think Loy is awful which is why I use II, but still don't see why he should get the entirety of the blame.

Here's my question for those giving Loy the benefit of the doubt.

Would Sapp have leaked it on Monday?

Of course he wouldn't have.

Sure it's his job to uncover news for our team, but not at the detriment of it. How many times do guys have info on recruits and they sit on it until the proper time? It has nothing to do with whether a 17 year old kid failed to say the magic "this is off the record", it has to do with professional journalism.

But that's not Loy. If he hears something... he demands that he spreads it first and that everybody knows he spread it first. He shoots first and aims second. Like I said, I doubt this cost us a kid that probably wasn't going to flip anyway, but Loy's tactics annoy the hell out of me.

I really think this is being over blown but I'd like to get your thoughts on Sampson then coming out and telling everyone? or Hemboldt coming out and telling everyone that Shaun never assumed it was a secret?

You mean after Loy broke it?

Like I said, I am not all up in arms about it or anything. This didn't ruin my day. It's just another checkmark in the "Loy is a dumbass" column for me.

If Loy spoke to Crawford and Crawford told him he's visiting this weekend, why would Loy think to NOT report the news because it would hurt ND?

I'm sure Loy knew that it was getting out before Saturday anyways, and if Crawford told Loy he was visiting, why would Loy think he hadn't made up his mind? Crawford knew that Hoke would find out (if he didn't outright call and tell him), so I'm sure Loy thought Crawford was going whether or not Fred found out. Although appparently Crawford wasn't as sure as he said he was (but Crawford obviously didn't realize this, and therefore Loy).

We were out recruited early for Crawford, and got excited that he's visiting. Now people want someone to blame, but blame Hoke's persuasion and us for not jumping on Crawford earlier. Loy's not to blame. I think you're grasping at straws and I don't get it, but this is the last post I'll make on this topic.

if i had to guess what step 1 would be in the guide to keeping a secret, it would read, "don't tell anyone."

so, if the crawford's really wanted this a secret they shouldn't have told anyone. end of story.

Yeah, and Crawford was probably nieve in the sense that when he started telling people he was visiting, he was prepared to stand up to Hoke's imminent phone call. Although he wasn't as ready as he thought.

I'm guessing obviously, but this seems the most likely scenario.

If Crawford wants to be here, he'll show up and be here. If he's borderline and uncertain of his interest, he'll continue doing what he's doing.

Hard to blame a reporter when the kid is acting scared of Michigan's coaches.

I haven't doubled checked timelines but I'm pretty confident that Sampson at II was the first reporter to publicly name Shaun as visiting ND. Hemboldt followed up on that board with his conversation with Shaun from that previous evening. Then Loy came out and said that it was indeed Shaun that he was referring to. Now Loy's cryptic message put II and rivals onto what was going on so they then followed up with Shaun but again Shaun didn't have to say anything to rivals.

In fact in II has removed Sampson's update from their board after it became a mini shit storm.

I thougt Sampson and Hembolt just said that he was thinking about visiting. No date or specifics. I can't find where they either of them did.

No Sampson posted early that morning that ND was expecting Shaun to visit. Hemboldt came on and explained the situation with the track meet but he wanted to come. Not sure exactly how long but Loy waited to eventually admit it was Shaun he was talking about.

So if it might hurt ND's chances with a recruit, Loy should avoid reporting it?

ND might as well put him on their payroll.

I'm not saying you're right or wrong I just want to ask you a couple questions.

1. What other fuck ups are you talking about?
2. How do you know the other insiders had the info and were sitting on it? I'm not on Il but from reading on here and BGI it seemed like Loy had it and the Il guys didn't. I was under the impression that they had to contact Crawford after the story because they hadn't heard about it.
3. Would it change your mind if Crawford and his family told Loy he could run the story that he did?
4. Don't you think all the recruiting guys know that they could lose access if they did something to screw over the staff? I would think that is carefully thought through before printing things.

Bump for Wooly.

FWIW, Loy is reporting that Crawford and his father have been in active communication with Kelly over the last few days. The trip that didn't happen fiasco isn't hurting our chances. The plan is in place for him to visit at some point. Long ways from over.

-This may sound like Loy covering his butt. However, Hemboldt at rivals has been saying the same thing the whole time.

Please oh please oh please.

If he does, he'd be doing so as an uncommitted player, right? That's a big gamble for an unofficial visit so excuse me if I get my hopes up a bit.

He specifically says that the Crawford camp said it's ok to report this. Loy has known about the visit for 3 weeks and the Crawfords gave him the go ahead for today.

So if he wanted to visit and cancelled for the track meet, and he's announcing and following through this time, gotta think it's very likely he's Irish, right?

IDK anything about his film and he seems really small, but stealing a ~95 on 247 from scUM?

Yes please!

He's coming Sunday morning and leaving Sunday evening. He'll be accompanied by his father and a close friend. He has let the Michigan staff know that he is visiting ND but has not decommited. He also may visit OSU on May 31st but that's not set at this point. Wants to meet with BVG, Cooks, and Kelly to see how he'd fit in the defense and potentially the offense.
