I don't think it's going to happen, but if it did I would be all in favor of it. I think Zaire is just as talented or more talented than Golson. I think he runs the option better, but his arm probably isn't quite as good. I like the kid's attitude too, supposedly Golson and Kelly aren't exactly best buds. In the end, I'm sure Golson will end up starting for Rice because of his experience, but I don't see Zaire bolting.

While I agree he can keep a locker room together I mus tadmit its not a great skill of his. This is the same guy who,a couple of years ago, differed between CW's guys and his.

Actually it was "CW's guys" that instigated the incident by going to the ex-coach's house to bitch about their new coach.

Ok in all seriousness, how? Wasn't CW working for Kansas City by the time that happened?

I thought it's been said that Golson can have an attitude at times and it's pissed off Kelly before? I don't remember the details, but I think it was something along the lines of taking criticism poorly. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought it's been mentioned in another thread. Forget I said anything

Makes sense. I hate when my boss is an ass and sometimes I fire back with a tude. When we end up pretty well off we are fine as frog hair. We just both want to be the best. Nothing more nothing less. That SHOULD be the case with QB's and coaches at a certain point.

Then proceeded to band those same players together and use most of them to put together an undefeated season. All of the players outside of Crist, ending up buying in and contributing. We may not have liked the message at the time, but he was absolutely right. He told them that they weren't brought here by him and he wasn't going to treat them like they were. That period of time was a real wake up call for any player with entitlement issues on this team.

We haven't looked back since... So I would argue that BK's methods have proven to be quite successful.

I meant to quote this, not BGIF's post, for my last comment.

I didn't say he couldn't keep the locker room together, quite the opposite. I said it wasn't his greatest skill. If it were there wouldn't of been a feeling of separation (IMHO).

Zaire is the last Irish QB to score a TD (Final play of the spring game last year).

I don't think there is one program in the country where the QB and coach didn't have "words" at some point. With such a high profile position in today's football, it is probably very commonplace. The one odd comment from Kelly though was that he said Golson wouldn't be teaching MZ the playbook. I would think that the two of them would be working more together - and maybe they are - but comments like that can cause some issues. Still, I expect MZ to stay at ND even if he loses out to EG. I like the confidence.

Man is this interesting. Just a few months ago, I asked about a few things conceding Malik.
1) Was he upset to not playing in '13 (He clearly said in a article that he was)
2) Is there any chance he would consider transfer if he doesn't play this year.
And for the most part, you all were pretty cool but everyone thought I was a bit far out on all this. And some really hammered me for suggesting a transfer.
And now this comes out ...hmmm its just interesting is all.

What the hell has come out?

There's been no talk of transfer outside of pointless speculation to my knowledge.

Malik did Play in '12, cause he was starting for his High School Team.

he is only one Big Hit away from being put in the Game.

I would say it's almost a foregone conclusion that Zaire will be in the game at some point this season, and not just for mop up duty. It's almost inevitable that a mobile QB is going to get dinged up at some point. Hell, Golson came out of games 2 or 3 times in 2012 for concussions or dings (Not counting when he was benched for Rees because of performance). While Golson may be a little bit more durable with the added weight, I still expect that he'll miss some plays here or there at least a few times in the coming season.

A few thoughts:

1: Only way Zaire speaking up "divides the locker room" is if there are others in the locker room who actually think he's a better starting QB than Golson. Which seems unlikely.

2: If he were to transfer he'd be an even bigger pussy than Kiel. He came in knowing that Golson had at least two years remaining and that he was going to have to earn a starting job. And that was with the #1 QB recruit in the class ahead of him also on the depth chart. Only thing that's changed is the Kiel's out of the way, and Golson is now one academic/ethical slip-up away from permanent separation from the university. I'd say Zaire's in pretty good shape for playing time, and could be the presumptive starter a year from now. Where's he going to get a better situation than that?

3: Ergo: he's not going to transfer.

4: I know it's a long off-season and we all need to talk about something, but different kids have different ways of motivating themselves and discussing that motivation (see also: Greg Bryant). Maybe we shouldn't read too much into a few comments in an interview?

5: Kelly may have slipped up in talking publicly about "his guys" back in 2011. But he wasn't wrong, was he? Once he got that team pulling in the same direction, they turned out OK. And say what you want about his teams but they've never shown any signs of quitting. He handles the locker room stuff pretty well.

Problem with Golson is not how he runs the option or his arm, is his inability to see the field. His field vision is terrible and that leads to missed reads and bad, really bad progressions (Kaep says hi). He is just a one-read Quarterback who also lacks anticipation and always throws too late. His arm talent is incredible but his football IQ on the field is pretty bad. He is a shorter Braxton Miller with a more talented arm. But you can be a great college QB even with this flaws. I'm sure Zaire can be a better Quarterback and probably a better NFL prospect but Golson is the starter and he will be a good one even being a limited QB.

And Zaire has a strong desire to be great, do not be surprised if he transfers next year. He is just competitive and wants to play. I understand him if he transfers. He is great and deserves a chance to play, if not here, somewhere else. Big fan of him.
