Notre Dame assistant Kerry Cooks saw plenty of Nick Watkins over the past few days. The Irish coach, who is responsible for recruiting the state of Texas for Notre Dame, visited with Watkins on Friday.
“We were just catching up,” Watkins said of himself and Cooks. “We weren’t really talking football, just catching up.”
Cooks returned to Dallas to meet with Watkins again at the beginning of this week and brought along the Irish’s new defensive coordinator, Brian VanGorder.
“It was pretty good,” the 2014 Irish cornerback commit said of meeting VanGorder. “He was just letting me know what kind of defense we’d see from him and about what kind of guy he is.”
The 6-foot, 180-pound Watkins was excited to hear the style VanGorder plans on implementing and fans likely will be too.
“It’s going to be NFL-style, that’s pretty much what we’re going to be running,” said Watkins.
“It’s pretty exciting to get that extra knowledge from the NFL in college. I don’t even know what to say, but it’s exciting.”
Watkins was impressed with VanGorder as a person as well.
“He’s pretty cool,” laughed Watkins. “He smiles a lot.
With that mustache, he looks like somebody, I don’t know who.
“He’s a pretty cool guy though. I look forward to learning from him and playing in his defense for the next four years.”
The Texas prospect believes the new Irish assistant will be successful as a recruiter in the future.
“I think he’ll definitely get guys,” Watkins said. “He has a great personality. He knows how to bond with a player.”
Watkins also shot down rumors this week about him possibly giving Texas another look late in the process.
“They just came by the school trying to make that last push, trying to get me to visit and stuff,” he said of the Longhorns. “I said I was sewn up and I’m not going anywhere.”
The Bishop Dunne High School star is looking forward to signing with the Irish two weeks from today.
“Definitely.”
